The Far Out Lounge & Stage Is South Austin’s Groovy New Music Hub

South Austin has a new hub for local music and fun at The Far Out Lounge & Stage. When I first saw the groovy, ’70s-style signage and marquee announcing live music at the familiar brick building in far south Austin, I immediately made a U-turn and rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.

It’s real! It’s really happening! The Far Out seemingly sprung up overnight at “the old Red Shed,” as south Austinites have called it since the dive bar shuttered last year. After the venue’s brief stint as Nicolaza’s, owners Pedro Carvalho and Bae Anthon hired booking agent and Austin music scene insider Lawrence Boone.

With Boone on board, Carvalho and Anthon set their sights on music and reinvented the space as The Far Out. If the crowds are any indication, they made the right call. South Austin was ready for a new groove.

Sam’s Town Point Honky Tonk Bar Makes Friends out of Strangers

Sam's Town Point Honky Tonk Bar in Austin

Dive bars used to be a dime a dozen in Austin, but these friendly hangouts are an endangered species due to the city’s ever-changing landscape. Sam’s Town Point, far south Austin‘s dive bar paragon, is quietly hanging in there, delivering up the coldest beer in town and tasty live music for those in the know.

Walk into Sam’s Town Point, a portal to Austin’s past, when everybody knew their neighbors, when half of the town hung out day-drinking and two-stepping at their local honky tonk. Live music has been a staple at Sam’s since the beginning. Today, a solid roster of local bands still play their hearts out on the tumbledown stage, under dim lighting and faded signs. [Read more…]

From Hot Rods to BBQ: The Story Behind Slow Pokes Brisket Shack

Slow Pokes Brisket Shack

I don’t often find myself in Manchaca. But when I venture that far south, I always come across something awesome. A few weeks ago, on the way home from Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-in, I was looking through the car window when something strange caught my eye. “Oh! Wait! Stop! Turn back! What was that? Okay…next time.” I thought I saw a trailer with a bunch of bicycles on the roof. And a couple of vintage cars in the parking lot. And there was a sign for BBQ. I came back a week later to check out this strange place, which turned out to be Slow Pokes Brisket Shack. [Read more…]

Independence Fine Foods Is Far South Austin’s Latest American Diner

April 8, 2015 by Mathis Kennington 2 Comments

Independence Fine Foods Austin

Editor’s Note: Independence Fine Foods shut its doors in January 2019.

A unique blend of old world Austin and new world organic welcomes patrons of Independence Fine Foods. The recently burgeoning entertainment district in far south Austin has urban sprawlers from all over the city trekking south of the river to discover the next great bar or cup of coffee. Located across from Moontower Saloon in an unassuming storefront off Manchaca Road, Independence Fine Foods is nestled in the heart of an emerging destination for local libations and chow.

The first time I saw Independence, I thought it was an international food store. It wasn’t until I ran past the restaurant that I sniffed hints of coffee and…is that roast beef?

Naturally, I needed to investigate. What greeted me inside the heavy hardwood entrance was an American diner that bridged the patience of slowly brewed coffee with ready-made organic meals. [Read more…]

Way South Austin Welcomes Indian Roller Boutique Roadhouse

December 18, 2014 by Edgar Barguiarena 2 Comments

Indian Roller Garden

Indian Roller takes great pride in growing many of the ingredients for their seasonal cocktails on site

You can never quite pinpoint the day a new bar district emerges in Austin. You typically have one bar open up in a new area doing, things a little differently, then a second one opens up nearby with a similar feel and you begin to reach a tipping point. Indian Roller Boutique Roadhouse has become Way South Austin’s tipping point. [Read more…]

Moontower Saloon Does It Better With Music, Food & Events

Moontower Saloon Austin Outdoor Seating

Creative, handmade seating adds unique Austin feel to the spacious patio

I set out on my Sunday adventure to discover a house-turned-watering-hole in way south Austin, Moontower Saloon.

The founding duo behind the spry and still young concept is visionary Josh Bumb and Richard Veregge, hands-on building and bio planner and marketing wiz.

The idea for this neighborhood destination, located at 10212 Manchaca Road, stemmed from a conversation which began two and a half years ago. The friends were chatting at Weirdo’s, and Bumb voiced his interest in creating “something even better.” Far surpassing their initial expectations, the team’s first collaborative concept came to life with Moontower Saloon.
