Black Fret Event Supporting Local Musicians Will Feature Ben Kweller

Posted on January 8, 2014 by Brittany Highland

Black Fret Austin Non-Profit

One year ago, I was introduced to a new non-profit with a bold goal: award at least fifty $25,000 grants to Austin musicians every year (if it’s too early for math, that adds up to more than one million dollars). Like most Austinites, the founders of Black Fret love our local music scene and want to see it thrive. But these folks are seeking to make a tangible difference, beyond just talk.

Through 2013, Black Fret has been recruiting members and asking them to make an annual donation of $1,500 to the organization. In return, members have been invited to some of the best house parties I’ve ever been to, featuring backyard performances and acoustic sets by some of the most talented musicians in Austin like [Read more…]

Dolce Neve: All Natural and Authentic Gelato Shop Opens in S. Austin

Posted on January 6, 2014 by Brittany Highland

Dolce Neve Austin

Dolce Neve at 1713 South 1st St.

Made-from-scratch, authentic gelato is coming to South Austin this week. Owners Marco, Francesca and Leo were born in Italy, and they remember going to the gelato shop as children. “It was the best part of the day,” Marco recalls nostalgically.

All three had successful jobs and first-class educations when they decided to pursue the frozen treat that reminded them of home. A management consultant in New York City, Marco realized “he didn’t like what he was doing anymore.” When he told his sister Francesca, who was working on a Ph.D in Finance, she was in the same boat. “I wasn’t happy either.” [Read more…]

El Chile Is Ready When You Are with Delicious Appetizers and Desserts

El Chile Cafe Austin

El Chile on Manor

Cravings for Mexican food strike me regularly, but I’m selective when it comes to adding local Mexican joints to my go-to list.

When Bryan from El Chile invited us to stop by and give the weekend dining experience a try, I obliged with an open mind.

Founded right here in Austin, El Chile has two locations:

  • Original location at 1809 Manor Road
  • Second location at 1816 South First Street

Soon, Cantina El Chile will open across the street from the Manor location. Cantina will serve hand-crafted drinks and appetizers, and the space will also be available for events.

Last Weekend for It’s a Wonderful Life Live Radio Play

Posted on December 16, 2013 by Brittany Highland

It's a Wonderful Life Penfold Theatre

Enjoy It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play this weekend in Round Rock

Drive into the dirt parking lot of the Old Settlers Association in Round Rock and your vehicle will immediately seem anachronistic.

After noticing and appreciating a collection of authentic log cabins and historical buildings, your eyes will eventually alight on your destination: Rice’s Crossing Store.

Old general store goods line the walls in Rice’s Crossing Store

The one-room store is rimmed by canned goods and other general store items from times long past. Beyond rows of folding chairs that seat an audience of 93, a simple stage fills the back of the room. When the five-person cast from Penfold Theatre Company comes out from behind the curtain, you’re in for a real holiday delight. [Read more…]

Can Austin Music Foundation Continue to Serve Our Local Musicians?

Posted on December 10, 2013 by Brittany Highland

Austin Music Foundation Non Profit

Austin Music Foundation changes the lives of Austin musicians with free consulting and events

Every person in Austin should be familiar with the Austin Music Foundation. This amazing non-profit provides free consulting and resources to local musicians who are trying to earn a living pursuing their talents.

I’m not talking about shallow, generic advice given over a couple of sessions together. You’d be shocked and impressed by the lengths that Austin Music Foundation goes to for their (non-paying) clients, and the years of proven experience their team members bring to the organization. You can learn more in an article we published on Austin Music Foundation over the summer.

When Austin Music Foundation asked the Austinot to help spread the word about their building campaign that’s going on through December 19th, I didn’t hesitate. With nine days to go, they’re getting extremely close to their $20,000 “tipping point” goal. Everything helps at this point.

So What Is This Money For?

Up until now, the good people at Austin Music Foundation have been [Read more…]

Peche Belongs on Your List of Go-To Cocktail Spots Downtown

Peche Warehouse District Austin

Your downtown business meeting or special event just ended, and now all you want is a place to relax and enjoy a hand-crafted drink. If this is you, I recommend Peche.

Located in the Warehouse District, on 4th Street just east of Lavaca, Peche’s unpretentious exterior is easy to pass without a second look. But step inside and you’ll be greeted by a low-lit, romantic interior with decor that hints at times past.

The menu is filled with a variety of cocktail, food and wine selections. The venue’s claim to fame is its status as Austin’s first absinthe bar. Cocktails are pre-prohibition style, inspired by owner Rob Pate’s historical studies and time abroad. In fact, your visits to Peche will likely transport you to another time and place. [Read more…]

What to Expect from Trail of Lights 2013

Posted on December 2, 2013 by Brittany Highland

Trail of Lights 2013

Trail of Lights is one of Austin’s most beloved holiday traditions. The event was cancelled from 2010-2011 due to city budget shortfalls, but the private sector rallied in response to the outcry from disheartened Austinites. Thanks to generous donations from major sponsors like H-E-B, KXAN, Austin-American Statesman and Seton, Trail of Lights returned last year with a flash of brilliance.

Admission continues to be free, allowing everyone access to a memorable night of Christmas cheer. The private sector is contributing somewhere in the $1.5 million range to produce Trail of Lights 2013.

If you’re a Trail of Lights veteran, there are some new features you can expect this year. If you’re planning your first visit ever, we have the information you need to get the most out of your experience. [Read more…]

8 Facts You Didn’t Know About Tiff’s Treats

Posted on November 13, 2013 by Brittany Highland

Tiffany Taylor Leon Chen Tiff's Treats

Tiffany Taylor and Leon Chen, founders of Tiff’s Treats

I’m still shocked when an Austinite tells me they’ve never tried cookies from Tiff’s Treats. C’mon people, we’re talking about a local icon! If you’re currently hiding your face in shame, stop it and go order some cookies for yourself.

Yes, Tiff’s Treats is known for hot cookie deliveries, straight to your doorstep (you can even get them with Blue Bell ice cream). Bakeries around town may have half-decent cookies, but where else besides Grandma’s kitchen can you get them hot and meltingly delicious? [Read more…]
