The Christmas lights are always on at Spider House Cafe. The funky atmosphere will grip you as soon as your foot is in the door, and the coffee drinks, full bar and food options will make you want to stay a while. Just next door, Spider House Ballroom keeps nightlife on an aggressive dose of oxygen with regular shows and events.

Maybe you haven’t been around Spider House since you moved out of West Campus with that degree in your hand. Or maybe you haven’t been initiated yet, your assaulted senses carrying you over the wooden threshold. Whatever the case, I’m here to tell you why a visit should be in your future. [Read more…]

Cuvee Coffee Introduces Recyclable Crowlers to Austin

Posted on January 5, 2015 by Matthew Champion

Crowlers from Cuvee Coffee in Austin

My first Crowlers

Crowlers have officially arrived in Austin and it’s all thanks to Cuvee Coffee owner Mike McKim and Oskar Blues Brewery. Crowlers are one-time use, recyclable 32-ounce cans that you can fill and seal on-site with your choice of craft beer to bring home with you.

Crowlers were thought up by Oskar Blues Brewery out in Colorado, and McKim stumbled upon the idea of bringing them to Austin while doing research for his nitro cans of Black & Blue cold brew coffee, by far Cuvee’s most famous beverage.

With an ever-expanding beer scene, Austin seems to be the perfect place for a growler alternative. Crowlers seem to be in for even more popularity once spring and summertime roll around because they provide a growler option you can take to the lake, on a camping trip or to any of the countless outdoor activities where glass is banned. Dozen Street: Bar for Artists and Those Who Love Them

Posted on December 30, 2014 by Kelli McDonald

Dozen Street Bar Exterior

Walking up to Dozen Street Bar

Dozen Street Bar, located at 12th and Chicon, is more than just an art bar. The cocktails, live music, unique events and inviting decor create a welcoming space for Austinites to feel at home, whether they’re artistically inclined or just admirers.

First Impressions

Once I spotted the mirror mosaic peacock door, I was more intrigued than ever to enter Dozen Street. While walking in, I was greeted with moody lighting above two pool tables, and walls textured with square panels of different materials.

Strolling further into the long venue, a full color peacock mosaic caught my eye. The welcoming bar, stage and cozy seating completed the indoor experience. [Read more…]

Get Buzzed on Austin’s High Brew Coffee

High Brew Coffee Flavors

High Brew’s four flavors of cold-brewed coffee

I think I found a new (healthy) addiction that’s as unique and refreshing as the city in which it was founded. It’s called High Brew, and if you were at Austin City Limits 2014 you might have had the chance to try it.

High Brew is a cold-brewed coffee that came into being because of two adventurous Austinites who saw a need for convenient iced-coffee. [Read more…]

Way South Austin Welcomes Indian Roller Boutique Roadhouse

Posted on December 18, 2014 by Edgar Barguiarena

Indian Roller Garden

Indian Roller takes great pride in growing many of the ingredients for their seasonal cocktails on site

You can never quite pinpoint the day a new bar district emerges in Austin. You typically have one bar open up in a new area doing, things a little differently, then a second one opens up nearby with a similar feel and you begin to reach a tipping point. Indian Roller Boutique Roadhouse has become Way South Austin’s tipping point. [Read more…]

Indulgence is a welcomed notion for any food lover, and today I indulged in two flavors known to regularly bring a smile to my face…chocolate and coffee.

I selected three local cold brew coffees and four local chocolatiers and hit the kitchen with an open palate, a patient photographer and trusty beverage consultant Darren Mykowsky.

After tasting each of the uniquely different locally drawn chocolates, my esteemed brood of tasting professionals (a kitchen full of buddies) and I divvied up the chocolate remains and paired each with its rightful cold brew cocktail partner. Let’s get caffeinated! [Read more…]
