August 16, 2017 by Joleen Jernigan 1 Comment

Mention Hatch green chiles to Austin residents, and you’ll likely witness a Homer Simpson-esque lolling back of heads, replete with drool.

Austin LOVES its Hatch green chiles and reveres the annual Hatch season—a time of treating our taste buds to some real heat, to accompany the 100-degree+ weather we face in August. Rejoice, for these five locally-based companies embrace the potent peppers from New Mexico, too. If you have a fever and the only cure is more green chiles, then you’re in luck! [Read more…]

Snow's BBQ Meat Plate

Snow’s holy trinity: brisket, jalapeño sausage, and pork steak

Guest article by Cristopher Rubio

I had been craving Snow’s BBQ for a couple months, the eatery ranked number one among Texas Monthly’s “Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas.” So a few Saturdays ago, I convinced my in-laws, Mayra and Jorge, to join me for a visit. The following is a running diary of an excellent day spent with excellent people, eating some of the best barbecue in the state. [Read more…]

Pitchfork Pretty has arrived on the east side restaurant scene, meeting all great expectations. Walking into the airy, cozy spot, I’m instantly taken with the natural light and comfortable setting. Jars of pickled vegetables near the front door catch my eye, and I have to stop a minute to take in the gorgeous surroundings. And then I try the food: sublime. [Read more…]

One of the best policies in Austin is our BYOB policy. All over town, plenty of restaurants offer some sort of BYOB. Whether it’s bring your own beer and wine, or beer, wine, and liquor, there’s BYOB fun for every taste.

Before Austin Was a Foodie City, Chez Nous Served True French Food

Chez Nous French Restaurant in Austin

Amidst the hustle and bustle of Sixth Street, with its never-ending chain of bars, live music pounding from open windows, and bright neon signs, is a restaurant that is quiet, cozy and feels like home. Our home. For that’s exactly what Chez Nous, the name of this French bistro off Sixth Street, translates to: “our home”, or “our place.”

How can such a cozy family restaurant operate in the Dirty Sixth district? Let’s rewind back to the late 70’s when three friends, Sybil Reinhart-Regimbeau, Robert Paprota, and Pascal Regimbeau, arrived in the capital of Texas from Paris, with hopes of introducing unsuspecting Austinites to the cuisine of their homeland. Celis Brewery: Austin’s First Craft Brewery Reborn

July 3, 2017 by Bill Tucker 5 Comments

Celis Brewery Beers

Celis Brewery’s line of brews brings back old school flavors in new, exciting ways (Credit: Jason Babos)

In the ever-expanding world of craft beer, you rarely get a second chance. Fail to gain a foothold in the marketplace, and your brewery could be sunk. Austin’s beer community is as close knit and supportive as a competitive market gets, but if you can’t stand out, you’ll quickly be forced to stand down.

These cold, hard facts make the story of Celis Brewery one for the ages. Like a phoenix reborn, Austin’s first craft brewery has risen from the ashes to reclaim its place among Austin’s beer elite. And it’s doing so with a heart for tradition, family, and old school quality. [Read more…]

The Austin Winery Tasting Room

Guest article by Susannah Haddad

Upon arriving at The Austin Winery, it’s clear that The Yard development in South Austin is going to be big. Currently home to businesses like St. Elmo Brewery, Vuka, Spokesman Coffee, and soon Still Austin Whiskey Co., the city’s first whiskey distillery, The Yard supports local while offering plenty to do.

Co-founders Ross McLauchlan and Cooper Anderson have been making wine since long before The Austin Winery had feet. With their balanced skill set and a gap in the Austin market, they enlisted the help of Matthew Smith, third co-founder and Chief of Operations, then opened their doors.

Walking in, you know these guys don’t mess around with innovation and efficiency. The open warehouse space not only houses a tasting room, [Read more…]
