Posted on January 8, 2020 by Joleen Jernigan

Margarita Flight Gabriela's Downtown
Try a margarita or flight of margaritas with a view of downtown

Austin patios are joyous gathering places for eating, drinking, people-watching, and–ideally–basking in the golden glow of the setting sun with a glorious view. Happily for us, we have Gabriela’s Downtown for all of the above.

Gabriela’s seems to have hit the ground running, almost immediately attracting friendly crowds to its beautiful patio. Besides tasty margarita flights, massive micheladas with over-the-top extras, and homemade horchata that alone is worth a visit, Gabriela’s also has great food.

Cafe Nena’i is tucked away on the east side of Austin. Elena Sanguinetti and Gladys Benitez, mother-daughter duo and owners of the bakery, chose the location because it was raw and largely untapped at the time they opened in 2017.

Sanguinetti, the mom, was raised on a farm in Paraguay. Daughter Benitez grew up in Miami. When they arrived in Austin, they wanted to share the food of their heritage and melting-pot experience in Miami.

It’s hard to deny Austin has some of the best tacos in the country. And they’re everywhere! Before moving here, tacos were a once-in-a-while treat for me, and now they’re a part of my weekly–and sometimes daily–diet. But there is an amazing meal that took me a little longer to discover: arepas! Yes, tacos will always be great, and I’m glad they’re popular cuisine here. But in this article, I’ll shed some light on the arepa, the taco’s under-appreciated cousin.

What is an arepa? It’s a patty, or cake, made from ground corn. The ground corn is mixed with water and salt to make a dough, and can either be fried, baked, or grilled. Arepas are normally eaten as a savory dish with beans, meat, and/or cheese. They’re typical to the cuisine in Venezuela and Colombia, but are enjoyed widely throughout Latin America and the world.

Breakfast tacos, Tex-Mex, and barbecue. The three points of the foodie Texas Trinity. Arguably the tip of this triangle of tasty treats, barbecue fandom goes beyond intense. Tell somebody you prefer Rudy’s over Franklin’s and prepare for battle.

But barbecue doesn’t stop with Central Texas. The Lone Star State is flush with some of the finest pitmasters in the world, 31 of whom will be attending the 10th Annual Texas Monthly BBQ Festival on Nov. 3, 2019, at the Long Center.

Six local masters of meat will be representing Austin (more than any other major city). In true hyperlocal fashion, here’s our guide to each and every one of them. Though they won’t be offering their full menus at the event, you can build up your appetite with this review of their smoking hot strengths.

Rainey Street is a hub for nightlife. Flush with music, late-night food trucks, and a beer garden, it has all of the fun and (sometimes) less of the Sixth Street crowds. But recently, I had the privilege of experiencing Rainey in a different light: at 10 a.m. on a Saturday during brunch at Anthem.

Brunch Menu at Buenos Aires Cafe
Pink bubbly from the updated wine menu is a perfect brunch accompaniment

Austinites get into a real lather when it comes to brunch. We love brunch! An Austinot favorite, Buenos Aires Café–Este, has begun serving brunch on Saturday. It’s a standout among local brunch menus, with delicious dishes you won’t find anywhere else.

I was invited to taste the brunch at Buenos Aires with owner/chef Paola Guerrero-Smith. She filled me in on what’s new with her 14-year-old Austin restaurant, including the Saturday brunch and revamped wine list.
