9 Austin-based Eateries at Austin-Bergstorm International Airport

March 16, 2020 by Katrina Cervantes Leave a Comment

Editor’s note: We live in uncertain times, with multiple travel warnings and bans in place. For those who still choose to fly, we hope you exercise every precaution to stay healthy. And for those who need to eat at the airport, these local eateries could all use our support.

For the average traveler, airports aren’t normally associated with fun. Flying can mean early mornings, late nights, waiting, and stressful hours spent packing. Although these realities are sometimes unavoidable, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has done an amazing job of creating a more relaxed and, dare I say, even fun environment for waiting passengers. It has become a reflection of Austin itself, brimming with live music and art. In a way, it is its own hub of culture and creativity.

Another huge way the airport creates a fun environment for guests is by filling the corridors with local Austin eateries we know and love. Everywhere you turn, you can find an Austin neighborhood classic. Look out for any of the following next time you fly.

Guide to Austin’s East Sixth Street

February 25, 2020 by Jessica Pino 3 Comments

Guide to Austin's East Sixth

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East, and what locals refer to as Dirty. West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard.

For locals, Dirty Sixth runs from Congress to I-35 even though technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth Street starts at Congress Avenue and runs east. But when you hear locals talk about East Sixth, we are referencing anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.

East Sixth as we know and love it today is an eclectic blend of shops, restaurants, dives, and cocktail bars. It’s also quite new–in relation to Dirty or West Sixth–with the gentrification of east Austin surging in the past 10 years.

Here are 15 of my favorite East Sixth Street establishments you won’t want to miss.

If Dripping Springs is the gateway to Texas Hill Country, then Belterra Village is the gateway to Dripping Springs. Located halfway between Austin and Dripping Springs on Highway 290, Belterra Village is a booming community that continues to grow.

It’s called a village for a reason. It’s a 93-acre mixed use development with residences and retail space. In other words, it’s one of the Austin area’s newest adult playgrounds. You can spend a whole day exploring, or stop for a bite on your way to Dripping Springs for a day trip.

In this list, I highlight some of the Austin-based businesses that have found a home at Belterra Village.

DipDipDip Tatsu-ya Is Making Austin Go Wild Over Shabu Shabu

DipDipDip Tatsu-ya Dining Room in Austin

Guest article by Stephen Edward

Located in north Austin, DipDipDip Tatsu-ya, from the minds behind Ramen Tatsu-ya, is a shabu shabu-style restaurant. Shabu shabu is a Japanese hot pot type meal where proteins and vegetables are dipped back and forth in a boiling broth until cooked.

The experience certainly cannot be enveloped in this write-up alone. DipDipDip is beautiful and the staff members are welcoming, knowledgeable, and there to guide you through the motions. Relax and enjoy.

Feel Like Family at Authentic Gabriela’s Downtown

Margarita Flight Gabriela's Downtown
Try a margarita or flight of margaritas with a view of downtown

Austin patios are joyous gathering places for eating, drinking, people-watching, and–ideally–basking in the golden glow of the setting sun with a glorious view. Happily for us, we have Gabriela’s Downtown for all of the above.

Gabriela’s seems to have hit the ground running, almost immediately attracting friendly crowds to its beautiful patio. Besides tasty margarita flights, massive micheladas with over-the-top extras, and homemade horchata that alone is worth a visit, Gabriela’s also has great food.

Cafe Nena’i is tucked away on the east side of Austin. Elena Sanguinetti and Gladys Benitez, mother-daughter duo and owners of the bakery, chose the location because it was raw and largely untapped at the time they opened in 2017.

Sanguinetti, the mom, was raised on a farm in Paraguay. Daughter Benitez grew up in Miami. When they arrived in Austin, they wanted to share the food of their heritage and melting-pot experience in Miami.
