Hey there, Austin! Welcome to another episode of the Austinot Music Podcast. Today I have the good fortune of featuring another Austin transplant like myself. Our featured artist is Joshua Martin. Joshua is a singer/instrumentalist/songwriter who recently settled down in the Live Music Capitol.

Joshua Martin is originally from Dallas, Texas. There he honed his skill at the guitar, having played for years. In fact, in one of his songs, he refers to himself as “the kid with the guitar.” [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. 10: Ron Kewin

Posted on June 14, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

It’s summertime in Austin, and that means it’s time for some folk on this episode of the Austinot Music Podcast. That’s right. To me, Summer means folk music, road trips and bare feet. Those images personify an American summer in my mind.

Similarly, folk music personifies a few things as well. First, it personifies the stripped-down appeal of the Summer and a very American way of approaching problems. Historically speaking, folk music has provided a way for the everyman to comment on his society, religion or historical period. It’s a vital part of the American identity. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. 9: Daniel (Kai) Kalin

For today’s Austinot Music Podcast, we are featuring local musician Daniel Kalin…but you can just call him Kai. He is originally from the Northeast, and has brought to Austin a truly unique blend of classic rock. It’s safe to say that Kai truly makes his music his own, blending genres left and right.

Sometimes you’ll catch him heavy into country sounds, like in his song “Heart of Fire” that I use in the intro to this week’s episode. At other times, Kai blends so many different styles together and creates something wholly individual. That’s why I love Austin music. You get a little bit of everything here. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. 8: Shelby Anderson

Hey, look at that! It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for another Austin music podcast! Today I am moving a bit out of my comfort zone by featuring some serious Mississippi blues. Today’s artist is Shelby Anderson. He recently moved to Austin from Mississippi, and he brought with him a unique blend of experimentalism and blues music.

Shelby’s love affair with music began years ago. He comes from a musical family. Growing up, he listened to one of his grandfathers play the saxophone and clarinet, and his other grandfather play the guitar and fiddle. These musical instruments would prove to have a catalytic effect on this young musician. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. 7: The PJ’s

Happy Thursday, everybody! Though this is an Austin blog, I am coming at you straight from Northern California this week! This is some serious hill country up here. I feel right at home. Despite the topography, Austin will always have one thing over California: live music. Forget the hills.

Today’s Austin music podcast is devoted to the PJ’s. This band is something out of left field, podcastically speaking. The Austinot Music Podcast has been knee-deep in Americana lately, and the PJ’s are right at home in this trend. The PJ’s, however, are Americana with a twist. They infuse blues and rock with wit and [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #6: Heather Bishop

Hi everybody! There is nothing like recording an Austin music podcast in the rain. I can kick back, sip come coffee and listen to some great tunes while the rain beats on my window. I hope you’re enjoying the precipitation as well.

I’ve decided to play a little more folk music today, in honor of the laid-back weather. Well, it’s not totally folk, but it’s folksy. Today, I want to introduce you to Heather Bishop, a musician living in Austin. Her music is melodic and emotional, calling up ideas of the West, romance and passionate adventure.  Heather Bishop is an extremely multi-talented artist. She’s had a prolific career; her live music alone has spanned many festivals. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #5: MT Hellton

Posted on May 3, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

Hi everybody! Thanks for checking out our Austin blog and my Austin Music Podcast. This little podcast has another featured artist waiting for your ears. The last few episodes have been pretty high-energy, so I think it’s time to tone it down a notch this week. Today’s musican is named MT Hellton, and he is going to help us unwind.

MT Hellton is an acoustic and folk artist living in Austin. Born in Lockhart, Texas, his parents were nomads who travelled around Texas looking for work in cotton fields or picking pecans for gas money. They and MT often lived in abandoned houses, broken down barns, and sometimes in their Plymouth station wagon. In the summer of 1966, MT’s father found a job working for a turkey ranch, so the family finally settled down in Austin.

With his nomadic past behind him, MT Hellton started playing a second-hand guitar his brother gave him in 1972. Thus began MT’s love affair with acoustic music. It is a passion he has been pursuing ever since.

MT’s music is very guitar-driven. I’d expect to hear him through the window of a passing [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #4: The Hereticks

Posted on April 26, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

This week I am featuring a high-energy Austin band named the Hereticks on the Austinot Music Podcast. Straight out of West Campus, the Hereticks started making music in Spring of 2011. Three of the four members met while living in Pearl Street Co-op, which is somewhat of a haven for musicians and artists west of UT.

The Hereticks are: Ofer Shouval (guitar, vocals), Wesley Maffly-Kipp (bass, vocals), Will Johnson (guitar, vocals), and Peter Farago (Drums). [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #3: The Rocketboys

Posted on April 19, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

This Austinot Music Podcast episode is very exciting for me personally. Why? Today I have the pleasure of sharing some music from Austin musicians, the Rocketboys.

I started listening to the Rocketboys when they formed in Abilene, Texas years ago. Their powerful music, tumultuous history, and journey to settling in Austin has earned the Rocketboys a place among my favorite featured bands.

The Rocketboys were the soundtrack to my growing up. Over the years, I have watched the band develop a complex and emotional voice. With a style ranging from powerful and sweeping to fragile and melodic, the Rocketboys have spent the past seven years crafting a sound that is their own. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #2: Da Di Da

Posted on April 12, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

Hearing a truly eclectic band is always a breath of fresh air for me. I spend a lot of my time sifting through bands who, though talented, find it hard to deviate from time-tested genres. So my ears perked when I heard my roommate listening to Da Di Da one day. I asked what genre they were, and the best description she could give was, “a kind of jazz-rock with a lot of storytelling.”

I walked to my room to download Da Di Da’s EP, and I soon realized just how right she was. [Read more…]
