Through the power of her voice, Rupi Kaur brings a captivating performance to the world stage in an all-new spoken word poetry experience. Audiences are taken on a journey of personal loss and love, growth, mental health, community, friendship, and strength. These universal themes take center stage as original music scores the show and projections immerse audiences.

Performing new unpublished pieces, poems from ‘home body’ and greatest hits from her iconic books ‘milk and honey’ and ‘the sun and her flowers’ – join Rupi on her World Tour as we reconnect with each other and most importantly, ourselves.

HARTMAN FOUNDATION CONCERTS IN THE PARK

FREE SUMMER SERIES RETURNS FOR 20th SEASON

Austinites know summer has begun once the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park kicks off. All ages, including pets, enjoy relaxing Sunday evenings with different musical ensembles presented by the Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO). The setting of kids dancing, couples lounging on blankets, intrigued passersby and friends gathering never gets old. Residents of the “Live Music Capital of the World” are invited to come enjoy and experience the original kind of live music that happened in town centers years ago.

In its 20th summer season, these free ensemble concerts take place at the Hartman Concert Park in front of the Long Center City Terrace and run on Sunday evenings. Thanks to a generous gift from the Hartman Family Foundation, these informal concerts for the Austin community continue to be funded each season allowing Austinites to become acquainted or reacquainted with the classical music experience. Performing music from jazz and light classical to pops selections and film scores, concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket, and make it a group outing.

CONCERT SCHEDULE:

June 12: Wind Ensemble
June 19: String Quartet

Angelique Kidjo Remain In Light at McCullough Theatre

May 6, 2022 by Clarett C. Leave a Comment

ANGELIQUE KIDJO REMAIN IN LIGHT AT McCULLOUGH THEATRE

Four-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo is a force of nature, capable of transforming any musical material in her path with her powerful voice and positive message.  To close Texas Performing Arts’ 40th Season, Kidjo revisits her unforgettable Remain in Light project from 2018, in which she repatriated the Talking Heads’ 40 year old album by connecting with the music’s original Afropop underpinnings and filtering its new-wave sensibility through her own musical influences from across the African continent.  Kidjo uplifts the music with her euphoric singing, backed by layers of explosive percussion and driving horn orchestrations, and mines the songs for topics that resonate today, adding her own lyrics in languages from her home country of Benin.

Remain in Light was recorded with superstar producer Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Rolling Stones, Beyoncé).  They take classic songs such as “Crosseyed and Painless,” “Once in a Lifetime,” and “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)” and reinterpret them with electrifying rhythms, African guitars, and layered backing vocals.  The track-by-track re-imagination celebrates the genius of Talking Heads, Brian Eno, and the touchstones that made the original so revered while reclaiming rock for Africa and bringing the landmark 1980 album full circle in a fitting close for Texas Performing Arts 40th Season.
