The Austinot Weekend Concert Picks: Dec. 7-8, 2018

Salutations, music fans! Another holiday weekend is upon us. While you may be tempted to run around town searching out that perfect ugly Christmas sweater, may I suggest taking a break with some fine local music? This time around, we recommend two benefits for worthy organizations and a classic Austin folk artist. Enjoy the weekend and remember to listen local!

Friday, Dec. 7

The SIMS Foundation Benefit w/Mamahawk, Bleached Roses, Mean Jolene, Carry Illinois, Lauren Burton, Lola Tried (solo set)

@ Hotel Vegas (1502 E. 6th) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event

One of the most interesting bands rocking around Austin these days, Mamahawk’s eclectic mix of folky soundscapes and electronic backbeats spans the sonic landscape. While the group’s first record played with digital drum tracks and synth underneath subtle acoustic guitars, their newest work stretches their sound even farther.

This year brought us the extraordinary dance jam “Lioness” and “Brian Invaderz!” a laid-back space age funk track. Brand new single “Moonride” continues the groovy vibe with smooth harmonies, intricate drum work, and layered synth. A band worth exploring over and over again.

Also playing are indie rock band Bleached Roses, pop rock act Mean Jolene, theatrical indie rock band Carry Illinois, and Lauren Burton of Lola Tried.

Matt the Electrician w/Peter Mulvey

@ Cactus Cafe (2247 Guadalupe) – 8:30 p.m. – Tickets

Who doesn’t love Matt the Electrician? A tradesman turned acoustic guitar-toting troubadour, Matt has been a staple of the Austin folk scene for years.

From tunes like the touching and somber “The Bear (Trio)” (from 2017’s “The Doubles”) to a glorious cover of “Jesse’s Girl,” Matt’s playfully tender picking and singing touches every emotion possible. Seeing him perform live is required for membership into the Austin Music Fanclub (not a thing), so tick that box as soon as humanly possible.

Also playing is Milwaukee singer/songwriter Peter Mulvey.

Saturday, Dec. 8

Ho Ho Hoedown (HAAM and SIMS benefit) w/Ramsay Midwood, Esther Rose, Croy & the Boys, Los Coast

@ Sam’s Town Point (2115 Allred) – 8 p.m. – Facebook event

Another benefit for a fantastic cause, this year’s Ho Ho Hoedown features a rockstar lineup. Headlined by Sam’s Town Point owner and rootsy Americana artist Ramsay Midwood, the set is sure to please fans of all genres.

The classically styled honky tonk matches Croy and the Boy’s distinctive country twang, while Los Coast’s brand of brassy, throaty soul promises to shake the bar neon. Celebrate fine music and two fine organizations with this first-rate show.
