Happy weekend, amazing readers. Filling out your weekend calendar may be a challenging proposition, but that’s why we’re here. This time around, we recommend soulful blues, a benefit for a beloved Austin musician, and roots reggae straight off a Trojan records compilation. Have a wonderful weekend and–as always–listen local!
Friday, July 13
Rochelle & the Sidewinders w/Ray Prim, Denny Freeman
@ Saxon Pub (1320 South Lamar Blvd.) – 11 p.m. – Tickets
Boisterous blues played with skill, conviction, and soul, Rochelle’s band of merry players promises to blow Saxon’s roof clean off. Tunes like “Flip Side” discard a former lover with the strut and swagger of Aretha, while “Drinking at Noon” sings of troubled times soothed only by afternoon libations. Too much fun to be described in a single paragraph, Rochelle & the Sidewinders is a much-watch this Friday.
Also playing is soul man and Austinot favorite Ray Prim (9 p.m.) and guitar legend Denny Freeman (6 p.m.).
Saturday, July 14
Jake Ames Beats Cancer HAAM Benefit w/The Stacks, Why Bonnie, Caroline Says, The Sun Machine, The Infinites
@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River St.) – 8 p.m. – Event page
Combine an incredible lineup of local musicians with a worthy cause, and you have an evening well worth your time and hard-earned dollar. When Jake Ames, frontman for local indie rock band The Stacks, was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma earlier this year, the Austin music community erupted in support.
This benefit, hosted by HAAM, hopes to not only raise awareness, but provide financial relief for this beloved member of the local music community. And with a variety of acts on the bill, you get a wonderful evening of varied indie music to go with it.
Sunday, July 15
Lion Heights
@ Oskar Blues (4939, 10420 Metric Blvd.) – 3 p.m. – Event page
Back in college, my musical diet consisted of ska and roots reggae. As such, when a band comes around that doesn’t sound like they were plucked off the deck of a Royal Caribbean cruise liner, I immediately take notice. With a smooth Jamaican sound wrapped in positivism and social consciousness, Lion Heights is the perfect band to ease out of your weekend. Pints, pals, and rude boy sound make Oskar Blues the place to hang out and jam out this Sunday.
