To all the dads looking for rad music this weekend, Happy Father’s Day! What better way to spend your time than digging shows in the Live Music Capital of the World. This weekend, we recommend blistering bluegrass, and a two-fer of old and new school blues. Enjoy the family and our city’s awesome slate of local, live music.
Friday, June 15
Whiskey Shivers w/Otis the Destroyer
@ Scoot Inn (1308 E. 4th St.) – 7 p.m. – Tickets
Speed bluegrass played with blazing fervor and insane chops, Whiskey Shivers is one of Austin’s premier live bands. One of my 15 must-see Austin artists at SXSW Music 2018, this blistering five-some is a tour-de-force of evil Americana. Recommended tracks include the hundred miles a minute blast of “Reckless,” and “Graves,” a slow burn gospel style chanter. Couple their set with the psychedelic soul sound of Otis the Destroyer, and you have a show for the ages.
The Michael Hale Trio
@ Lamberts (401 W. 2nd St.) – 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. – No cover
Before Austin exploded into the grab bag of styles and sounds it is today, it was a blues town. Artists like drummer Michael Hale and his groovy trio keep the vibe alive, with smooth 12 bar jams and the occasional Duke Ellington crooner.
Mr. Hale leads the group with a wandering, jazzy flow, supporting top notch talent like the incredible Mac McIntosh. Go back in time to the days of dimly lit jazz joints and smokey soul with these talented throwbacks.

Alan Haynes
@ Clearport ATX (516 E 6th St)
When you need to re-launch a music venue, you have hundreds of options available. Kudos to Clearport ATX for dipping into Austin’s legendary blues past. Houston born but Austin bred, Mr. Haynes has played with Texas legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter, and Albert Collins over a career that’s spanned five decades. A unique talent that should not be missed by anyone with a heart for old school Austin.
