All hail the weekend! Our long work week is now a distant memory, so let’s celebrate with three days of ridiculously rad music. This time around, we recommend emotional dream pop, lo-fi indie rock, and everything you need to know about who’s playing Pecan Street Festival. Get out there, have fun, and support local music!
Friday, May 4
Sydney Wright w/The Please Please Me, Otis Wilkins, Otis the Destroyer, more
@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River St.) – 8 p.m. – Tickets
An artist of depth, power, and stunning musical beauty, Austin’s own Sydney Wright’s emotional dream pop is poised to make a splash in the local scene.
Her new single, “Seiche,” is a lit fuse of simple piano, airy synth, and dream-like vocals, that explodes into a firestorm of drums and sing-along shouts. It’s been in my rotation for a month now and it never gets old. And if you need another reason to check out Sydney Wright, her cover of The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” is the best thing ever.
Also playing at the single release show are native Austinites The Please Please Me, Otis Wilkins solo and with his band Otis the Destroyer, Carrie Fussell of Calliope Musicals, and many more.
Color Candy w/Edison Chair, Fuss Ricket, Matters
@ Sidewinder (715 Red River St.) – 9 p.m. – $8 door
Drowsy indie rock in the vein of Elliot Smith and Neutral Milk Hotel, Color Candy’s slacker-soaked vibe projects fun and forlorn in equal measure. The group’s three-song EP “Beach Ball” covers fertile ground in a short run-time. From the late ’90s emo of “High Sea” to “Change of Plans” swing and bop, the record showcases a band coming into its own.
Also playing are soul/rockers (and one of my favorite local acts) Edison Chair, electro/analog synth act Fuss Ricket, and Canadian techno/blues act Matter.
