Another weekend, another opportunity to enjoy the art form our fair city is best known for: live, local music. This week, we present our discerning readers with snarling garage rock, emotional indie pop, and a group prominently featured in a Robert Rodriguez film. Keep listening local, Austin!

girling EP Release Show
@ Sidewinder (715 Red River St.)
Brandishing a musical weapon of high-fi guitar fuzz, ear candy hooks, and Patrick Swayze references, girling celebrates the release of their new EP, “Side One,” this Friday at Sidewinder.
Dripping with soaring vocals, longing, and room-filling power chords, the new record deftly balances tongue-in-cheek lyrics with refreshingly uncomplicated garage rock. Also playing are Austin rockers, A. Sinclair, and alt-rock act, Ben Millburn.
Born Again Virgins
@ The Hole in the Wall (2538 Guadalupe St.)
Back in ‘99, I was super into Korea Girl, a moody, female-fronted alt-emo band known for deliciously dreary arrangements and teen angst lyrics. While time has dulled my enthusiasm for adolescent “poor me” sentiments, I still enjoy music seeped in minor chords. Born Again Virgins provides the same level of emotional gravitas, but with tighter lyrics and greater range. Tunes like “Quantify” and “Texas Heat” bounce from softly plaintive to all out agro, while “No Alibi” balances vocalist Anna Roenigk’s yearning lyrics with mournful cello and spare percussion.
Also playing are indie pop act, Rose Selavy, and folk rockers, The Battlin’ Nelsons.

Del Castillo
@ 3Ten Austin City Limits Live (310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd.)
Legendary Latin rock band, Del Castillo, brings their award-winning eclectic musical stylings to 3Ten Austin City Limits Live. Most famously known for their work with director Robert Rodriguez in films like “Desperado,” and his mariachi band, “Chingon,” this six-piece beautifully blends Latin rhythms with rock-n-roll snarl. An electric and exciting way to spend your Saturday night.
