Conans Serves Up Old School Pizza for Old School Austinites

Posted on July 8, 2014 by David Thomas

Do you want to eat pizza like an old school Austinite? Then get to the nearest Conans Pizza and try to eat a large Savage.

Two Dudes and a Dream

It’s hard to imagine Austin without its artisanal pizza restaurants, food trailers, or the run of the mill, by the slice variety that populate the downtown area. There was a time, however, when today’s popular pizza spots didn’t exist. Back then, 183 wasn’t a freeway, 2222 was a dirt road, and South Park Meadows was a giant field.

Stinson’s Bistro Manages Unique Mix of Coffee, Pizza

Posted on May 16, 2014 by Guest Blogger

Stinson's Bistro Deep Eddy

Smiling faces ready to welcome you to Stinson’s Bistro Deep Eddy

This guest blog article is by Michal Ann Morrison.

Stinson’s Bistro is a relatively new addition to Austin, but they’ve quickly built a reputation for great coffee. My espresso addiction being what it is, coffee is the very thing that took me there for my first visit. That and my roommates’ insistence that Stinson’s gluten-free options were too delicious to pass up.

At first I was skeptical that a place known for coffee could offer up pizza that was just as noteworthy. But one dining experience in and I was sold. [Read more…]

5 Best Pizza Joints in Austin

Pizza by the slice at East Side Pies

Pizza by the slice at East Side Pies

You may say I know a thing or two about pizza. My parents bought a pizza shop when I was 8 months old. I started officially working when I was 11, until I went off to college.

In my college years, I often gave into eating bad pizza for a variety of reasons: far from home, nothing else around and, quite simply, too lazy to care. I’ve grown older and wiser, and it has become my personal mission to try every pizza joint in Austin. So here’s my list of what I believe to be the best pizza places in Austin…so far. [Read more…]

Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company Draws a Crowd to South Austin

Every time I head out to the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company, it’s always packed to the brim with people. There’s good reason for this, and it’s admirable that ABGB has been able to develop such a following in less than a year. They opened their doors last summer and it seems like they’ve never closed since.

Despite the new company name, the people behind the brand are not inexperienced when it comes to the craft beer game. Head Brewers Amos Lowe and Brian Peters hold nearly fifty years of collective experience between them, with former leading positions held at Uncle Billy’s Brew and Que and Live Oak Brewing Company. The Queen of Pies Wears the Crown at Home Slice Pizza

Posted on February 25, 2014 by Cris Mueller

Iconic Home Slice Sign in Austin

Home Slice’s Queen of Pies (Photo credit: WallyG via Flicker CC)

I approached the mustachioed, pig-tailed little lady who sits atop 1415 South Congress Avenue. High above the cozy and fragrant Home Slice, the “Queen of Pies” reigns with authority and a slice of home for many Austinites.

There’s no escaping the wafting, nearly visible garlic and tomato bouquet that emerges from the doors, sills, and kitchen vents of the 9-year-old pizza venue that introduced New York style pizza to Central Texans. Jeff Mettler, Executive General Manager at Home Slice Pizza and More Home Slice, said it all began with a mission to “create an Austin institution based on the original, unfailing goodness that is authentic NY Style pizza.”

And so began what is hands-down one of my favorite dining experiences to date, with a member of pizza royalty. Mind the gap during my venture of craft beer, upside-down pie, and layers of flaky dough, for the raw storytelling proves true to the experience one is intended to have at Home Slice. [Read more…]

Savor Cozy Italian Vibe at Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria Downtown

Posted on October 17, 2013 by Matthew Champion

Frank and Angie's Pizzeria

Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria on West Ave., just off W. 6th Street

Editor’s Note: Frank & Angie’s shuttered in 2018.

Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria is fondly regarded by many Austinites, but somehow it manages to retain its undiscovered charm, year after year. I’ve never had to wait for a table here, and I’ve also never had a bad experience. It has everything you could want in your go-to Italian place: small, cozy, rarely crowded, cheesy décor, friendly staff, good food, fair prices, and big portions.

History

Frank and Angie’s was opened nearly twenty years ago by the same folks who run Hut’s Hamburgers around the corner. The founders stayed true to their ancestors with authentic Sicilian recipes. They’ve changed very little over time, as far as the menu goes. You can order a lot of the same items today that patrons enjoyed on opening day. [Read more…]

Can’t Make It to Naples This Week? Try House Pizzeria

When you want to find a new restaurant, you come to The Austinot. But when we want to find a new restaurant, where can we go for help? We rely a lot on word of mouth, tracking the buzz around town. But, admittedly, we have been known to reference Yelp for customer-sourced reviews and recommendations.

On one such day, Austinot Eric had a desperate craving for pizza. Everyone knows about Home Slice in SoCo, and we also love Little Deli in Crestview, but we wanted to try something new. Through Yelp, we discovered [Read more…]
