Savor Cozy Italian Vibe at Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria Downtown

October 17, 2013 by Matthew Champion Leave a Comment

Frank and Angie's Pizzeria

Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria on West Ave., just off W. 6th Street

Editor’s Note: Frank & Angie’s shuttered in 2018.

Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria is fondly regarded by many Austinites, but somehow it manages to retain its undiscovered charm, year after year. I’ve never had to wait for a table here, and I’ve also never had a bad experience. It has everything you could want in your go-to Italian place: small, cozy, rarely crowded, cheesy décor, friendly staff, good food, fair prices, and big portions.

History

Frank and Angie’s was opened nearly twenty years ago by the same folks who run Hut’s Hamburgers around the corner. The founders stayed true to their ancestors with authentic Sicilian recipes. They’ve changed very little over time, as far as the menu goes. You can order a lot of the same items today that patrons enjoyed on opening day. [Read more…]

Brass House Austin

Brass House now features a few food items to enjoy along with a full bar

Editor’s Note: Brass House closed in October 2016.

This guest blog article is by Edgar Barguiarena.

Every Marine does it. You’re down to your last deployment and you wonder what you’re going to do with your time and money.

“Most guys talk about opening a bar of some sort when they get out,” said Jason White, one of the owners of Brass House.

“I had spent 12 months in Afghanistan and didn’t get killed, so why not?” [Read more…]

Squeeze the Most Out of a Juice Cleanse at Daily Juice

July 3, 2013 by Cris Mueller 2 Comments

Daily Juice in Austin Texas

Daily Juice’s Warehouse District location in downtown Austin

What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say these two words…juice cleanse! Be honest, because I know firsthand that a small dictionary of words and very graphic images came to my mind when I was asked if I’d like to try out the 3-day Sunshine Cleanse from Daily Juice.

I learned a tremendous lesson while researching for this story: juice cleanses are not a fit for everyone. However, I did give the cleanse my all. A provider of cold-pressed juices and catering options, Daily Juice bars keep the green in Austin’s weird, and in your diet. Since 2003, Daily Juice has set up multiple operations in downtown Austin and Westlake. Today Phillip Doucette, Robert Larkin and John Martin have turned a juice craze into a sustainable business with spin-offs like JuiceLand and franchises. [Read more…]

Find Your Spotlight at The Hideout Theatre in Downtown Austin

Remember that feeling you had on the first day of school, every year from the age of five to fifteen? When I walked into The Hideout Theatre, I had that same feeling of sneaking into some kind of secret society for the first time.

Tucked away amongst its varied neighbors, which include those of political, artistic and hotelier fame, The Hideout opens up beyond a narrow doorway at 617 Congress Avenue. Filling two theaters (one 50-seat and one 90-seat), with a coffee house that offers breakfast, lunch, drinks and desserts, The Hideout is much more than first meets the eye. [Read more…]

After Decade on the Drag, Toy Joy Announces Downtown Move

April 25, 2013 by Brittany Highland 22 Comments

Toy Joy Austin Texas

Located at Guadalupe and 29th St. for more than a decade, Toy Joy is relocating to downtown Austin this summer

After the last week of May 2013, you won’t be able to find Toy Joy on Guadalupe anymore.

Rumors have been circling for the past few months, but the iconic local toy store just officially announced a move to downtown Austin.

Toy Joy has called 2900 Guadalupe St. its home for over a decade, just north of The University of Texas campus.

The reason for the move? Ownership shares in an official press release [Read more…]

Milk + Honey Trades Up Downtown While Nurturing Reputation for Quality

Spring specials at Milk + Honey downtown

Inviting spring specials at Milk + Honey downtown

The spa and salon arena in Austin is competitive. Consumers have their choice between large establishments that can easily provide a day’s worth of pampering, and smaller venues that excel in a particular set of services.

Many spas offer the familiar facials and massages, so most customers ultimately end up basing their loyalty on the finer details.

With two locations in the Austin area and another dedicated salon location at the Arboretum, Milk + Honey has the details down, with critical acclaim that testifies to their excellence. [Read more…]

Firehouse Hostel and Lounge in the West Sixth District of Austin

This guest post is by Cris Mueller.

Firehouse Hostel and Lounge is a morsel of Austin history sitting quietly amongst the hustle of our fondly regarded West Sixth district and the bustle of our downtown office high-rises.

Business partners Kent Roth and Collin Ballard have tastefully occupied the legendary Washington Fire Engine Co. No. 1 with a boutique style hostel that offers seasoned backpackers and first time hostel goers a unique Austin experience.

Downtown Coffee Shop, Bar & Lounge, Halcyon Suits Any Occasion

March 12, 2013 by Brittany Highland 4 Comments

Halcyon Austin at Night

Halcyon by night

We categorize most coffee shops as appropriate for a specific purpose, at a specific time of day: late night chill hangout with friends, outlets-galore study spot.

But I long ago discovered a local staple that is all things to all people. Located in the Warehouse District of downtown Austin, Halcyon manages to wear a typically chaotic persona with magnetic flair. [Read more…]

Romance at Austin Italian Restaurants: Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano

February 6, 2013 by Laura Darby 2 Comments

Carmelo's Italian Restaurant in Austin

Find Carmelo’s at 504 E. 5th St.

Want a taco? Austin has a million places to go to get one. Some BBQ? Absolutely. But until I visited Carmelo’s downtown, I wasn’t sure that I could experience really wonderful Italian food in our southern capital city.

The trope of the romantic Italian restaurant is pervasive in movies and TV. Sadly most Italian restaurant experiences don’t measure up to their cinema counterparts, and we just have to be glad that they don’t simulate scenes from The Godfather and that we can walk out alive. From red and white gingham table cloths to greasy, undercooked garlic knots, a lot of Italian restaurants are too cheesy in every sense of the word. [Read more…]

Austin Coffee Shop Hunt #3: Caffe Medici

May 22, 2012 by Dustin Vegas Leave a Comment

Caffe Medici is a local Austin coffee shop that has succeeded through its customer loyalty. This place has been recommended to me more times than any other coffee shop. Since the majority of the recommendations were positive, I decided to place it high on my list of shops to check out. Here is what I found out:

Founded in 2006, Caffe Medici opened up shop with a Clarksville location. The company was started with a simple mission: be responsive to customers, their neighborhood and the environment. Customers quickly began to appreciate Caffe Medici for its myriad of available coffee styles. You can get anything from an espresso, to drip coffee, French press, or latte. Moreover, the employees of Caffe Medici take the time to study each type of coffee so they can explain and customize for their customers. Soon, however, Caffe Medici’s reputation outgrew its small seating capacity. It was time to grow. [Read more…]
