New Cafe Causing Coffee Ruckus in Downtown Austin

February 21, 2014 by Lizzy Newsome 2 Comments

Cafe Ruckus in Downtown Austin

Cafe Ruckus is located at 409 W 2nd St.

Editor’s Note: Cafe Ruckus closed in July 2017.

Every day, the population of Austin is growing. I have heard many different numbers thrown out, but they all point to the same thing. A booming population. While opinions vary on the growing influx to our fair city, one thing is certain…we are going to need more coffee.

If seating is scarce at your favorite wi-fi-enabled caffeine dealer, there is a new spot for you at Cafe Ruckus. Located in Austin’s new “Coffee District” (aka the 2nd Street District), this fresh locale is eager to win over new regulars. [Read more…]

Emerald Tavern: Part Tabletop Gaming Hangout, Part Beer and Coffee Bar

February 6, 2014 by Robert Luke Leave a Comment

Emerald Tavern Austin

Emerald Tavern is located at 9012 Research Blvd.

In the last few years, the North Cross area of town has become more and more exciting and lively. One of the newest additions to the neighborhood is Emerald Tavern. It’s not just another coffee shop and bar because it’s also a store and hangout for tabletop gamers.

Opened in October 2013, Emerald Tavern features a unique and relaxing atmosphere for gamers and anyone else who wants to sit down and have a drink. Owners Marshall Geyer and Erich Weidner “really wanted to recreate something that we do every weekend that we love:  games, beer, food, coffee. Something we would do with our friends,” explained Geyer. “There are a lot of game stores in town. There are a lot of places to go drink in town. But there aren’t a lot of places that are friendly to do both at the same time.”

The atmosphere at Emerald Tavern is quite comforting as you walk in. It’s decorated in an English tavern style with a beer selection to your left and a game selection to your right, while being audibly blanketed with music from your favorite film and video game scores. [Read more…]

Cenote: Not Your Average Coffeehouse

October 18, 2013 by Guest Blogger Leave a Comment

Cenote Austin

Cenote is located at 1010 E. Cesar Chavez in Austin

This guest blog article is by Madison Torres.

How is one of the newest coffee shops in Austin already one of the best? Austinite owners, Cody Symington and Mary Jenkins, are doing more than just a few things right.

From firsthand experience and an interview with one of the owners, I have the delight of sharing with you a few of the reasons why Cenote (seh-noh-tay) is one place you don’t want to pass up. [Read more…]

Wright Bros Brew and Brew Beer

Wright Bros. Brew and Brew is located at the former home of Progress Coffee, 500 San Marcos St.

The craft beer scene in Austin is blowing up. For every new brewery that opens, there are at least three bars that pop up, eager to serve you the best local beers that Austin has to offer.

Continuing the tradition that Eric started with his Best Burger Joint in Austin series, I’m profiling and reviewing the best craft beer joints in Austin, with the occasional stop or two at bars that have room for improvement.

I’ll take into consideration everything from beer selection to ambiance to overall value, and everything in between.

Please join me as I try to catalog your favorite watering holes in Austin, and let me know what you think in a comment below.

Strange Brew: Coffee Haven, Live Music, Local Feel

July 16, 2013 by Dustin Vegas Leave a Comment

Strange Brew Coffee Shop in South AustinThere is a strange little coffee shop in South Austin that you ought to know about. That is, if you’re a caffiene-fueled night owl like myself. Strange Brew is one of the few 24-hour coffee shops in Austin. It’s a rare breed that combines coffee, live music, local beer, and a spacious study area. There is something for everybody here.

About Strange Brew

A little background first. Strange Brew opened its doors in 2010 as a humble coffee shop. Its owner, however, wasn’t happy running just another coffee shops in this college town. He had big dreams to make the Brew another type of beast. [Read more…]

Teo Gelato Celebrates 10 Years of Quality and Considers Expansion

June 3, 2013 by Brittany Highland 8 Comments

Teo Espresso, Gelato and Bella Vita in AustinIn 2002, Matthew Lee quit his high tech job to open a gelato and espresso shop in Central Austin called Teo Espresso, Gelato & Bella Vita. In the beginning, there were naysayers who doubted that Lee would be successful. “What do you know about gelato?” he remembers hearing.

But the truth is, he did know something about gelato, even then. Lee trained in Italy with renowned gelato makers, like Antonio Lisciandro, considered the best gelato maker in Florence. His knowledge and skill has continued to grow over the past decade of Teo’s existence. Today, he can effortlessly spout off [Read more…]

Downtown Coffee Shop, Bar & Lounge, Halcyon Suits Any Occasion

March 12, 2013 by Brittany Highland 4 Comments

Halcyon Austin at Night

Halcyon by night

We categorize most coffee shops as appropriate for a specific purpose, at a specific time of day: late night chill hangout with friends, outlets-galore study spot.

But I long ago discovered a local staple that is all things to all people. Located in the Warehouse District of downtown Austin, Halcyon manages to wear a typically chaotic persona with magnetic flair. [Read more…]

The Buzz Mill Brings Lumberjack Life to East Austin

March 11, 2013 by Eric Highland 5 Comments

The Buzz Mill Austin

The Buzz Mill recently opened on the eastside, off of Riverside

Beavers coming out of the woodwork (literally), subdued mason jar lighting hanging from the rafters, a huge outdoor yard, BBQ from one of the most famous pits in history, fruit-infused liquor, all-you-can-eat flapjack breakfast for $5, free Wi-Fi, full bar, coffee, open 24/7…should I go on?

Anyone who keeps up with the Austin scene has already heard the clamoring about this new joint on East Riverside. But the chatter shouldn’t surprise anyone. When the owner of Bootleg Coffee gets together with the manager of Emo’s and the marketing director at Antone’s for a project, you know something special is on tap.

And they’re just getting started.

Since the grand opening of The Buzz Mill on January 19, 2013, we’ve had numerous Austinot readers ask us to pay them a visit. And so we did. [Read more…]

Mozart’s Coffee on Lake Austin Delights Eyes and Taste Buds

Main indoor seating area at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters

In mid-2012, our good friend Dusty Vegas wrote a popular Austinot series that was descriptively titled “Austin Coffee Shop Hunt.”

Over time, we’ve featured other delightful coffee spots including Dominican Joe, Kick Butt Coffee, Austin Java and Corona Cafe.

I’ve decided to bring back the coffee talk by reviewing one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin: Mozart’s Coffee Roasters on Lake Austin.

Once upon a time, when life was simpler yet somehow seemed incredibly difficult, I was a college student. A friend introduced me to Mozart’s down on Lake Austin, and I was enchanted. [Read more…]

Austin Coffee Shops Hunt #5: Hip and Young at Thunderbird Coffee

June 4, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 4 Comments

As you arrive at Thunderbird Coffee on Koenig, you’ll probably first notice how it glitzes up an otherwise drab street. Dogs and their owners may be lounging on the open-air patio. Bay windows cover most of the available wall space, allowing natural light to filter into the coffee house. The spacious interior of Thunderbird is marked by pastel-colored walls and obtuse hanging lanterns. If it’s not too packed, grab a seat at a table or couch.

Established in 2007,  this coffee shop is where people come together – the type of place where you and yours can grab drinks and chat. Though the music may seem a bit too overbearing for casual studying, you’ll probably see many people clicking away at their laptops regardless. There aren’t many power outlets available, so those who do study will probably be planted for a while. The clientele is mostly composed of hip twenty-somethings who have time to kill. Still, the drinks and food at Thunderbird have cultivated a community of regulars of all ages. [Read more…]
