Peppermint Parkway will return to the Circuit of the Americas this year, bringing wonderful Christmas cheer to Austin.

Last year, the drive-thru COTA Christmas Lights event was introduced as a safe way to celebrate amid the coronavirus outbreak. The mile-long parkway is lined with millions of Christmas lights and music.

The drive-thru Circuit of the Americas Christmas lights experience returns with over 6 million lights, live performers, dancing elves, roller skating snowflakes, as well as the Grinch. Pepper and Mint will make a return trip down Tunnel Road this year to deliver their notes to Santa.

COTA Peppermint Parkway: Christmas Lights 2021

Aside from the old faces at the Peppermint Christmas lights, two new holiday towns, ONEderland and Twinkle Trail, have been created to give their own touch on holiday light displays. Guests may also have their photo taken in the Mistletoe Kissing Booth, travel the Twinkle Trams, an open-air shuttle that takes groups around the parkway, and ascend to the top of the COTA Candy Cane to enjoy the lit parkway and Austin skyline.

Guests will also be able to drive their vehicles around COTA’s 3.41-mile FIA-grade Formula 1 track during the holiday event.

The Sweetest Deal is $95 and includes everything mentioned above, i.e., the Parkway Pass, Track Lap, and Fast Pass.

Annual Black Fret Black Ball Returns to the Moody Theater in Austin

December 2, 2021 by Bill Tucker Leave a Comment

Black Ball Group Shot
Black Fret Black Ball 2018 was a celebration of music, giving, and community. (credit: Bill Tucker)

If you follows this site with any regularity, you know we love Black Fret. A music organization with a heart towards sponsoring and supporting the local music community, Black Fret is a shining example of what people can do when they get together for a united cause. When their annual year-end extravaganza was cancelled in 2020, we were crestfallen. Today, we’re happy to report, it’s back! Whether you’re a long time member or someone who wants to give back to local musicians, the Black Ball is a great opportunity support and enjoy live Austin music.

Black Fret Black Ball Back at the Moody

Jonathan Terrell performs at Black Ball 2019 (credit: Bill Tucker)

Started by Matt Ott and Colin Kendrick in 2013, Black Fret’s primary mission is supporting the Austin music community through member supported grants. Black Fret members pay yearly dues and in exchange gain access to unique listening sessions throughout the year. All of the artists at these shows are 100% local and are fairly paid for the gig.

With that money, Black Fret provides grants to a set number of artists as voted by the members. Every year this number’s increased, along with the grant values. Not only do winning artists receive their funds (to be used and allocated for music related endeavors), they receive counseling and mentorship from industry pros.

This year, in spite of the pandemic and the financial turmoil caused by it, Black Fret will be awarding over $200,000 in grants to twenty artists. And they’ll all be present and performing during the Black Ball. In what’s been aptly labeled as “a real life mix tape”, each artist will perform two to three songs between the awards. Take it from someone’s who’s been to a few Black Ball’s – it’s an amazing showcase of our vibrant and diverse music community.

And the Winners Are…

This year’s list of grant awardees could be one of the best in recent memory. If you’ve never heard of these artists, check out my Black Ball 2021 Spotify playlist to get a feel for all of them:

  • American Dreamer
  • BLK Odyssy
  • Clarence James
  • Darkbird
  • Deezie Brown

  • Harry Edohoukwa
  • Jake Lloyd
  • James Robinson
  • Jon Muq
  • Jonathan Terrell
  • Lisa Morales

I’m Sold! How Do I Attend Black Fret Black Ball 2021?

Daniel Sahad of Nane performs during a 2021 Black Fret showcase. (credit: Bill Tucker)

The Black Ball is a private event for Black Fret members, guests, sponsors, and former recipients. But that doesn’t mean you’re out in the cold! The best way is becoming a member. Doing so is easy. With three tiers of access (single, duo, and party), you can get in on the fun for not only the Black Ball, but a year’s worth of exclusive music experiences. I’ve been attending Black Fret events for well over 6 years and some of my most cherished show memories come from those performances.

And if you want to attend without committing to a membership, single event tickets are available for $100 at blackfret.org/donate. Just add “Black Fret Ball 2021 Donation” to the comments and you’re in!

Whether you sign up for a membership or attend the event as a first timer, you’re doing an immeasurable service to the Austin music community. The past year’s been hard on our local talent. Anything we can do to support them not only through our listenership but financially proves Austin is still the Live Music Capital of the World.

And, in the end, the Black Ball is an absolute blast. I’ve always described it as an Austin music homecoming where past and current winners meet up under a cool December sky and celebrate this great community. More a hang than a show, the Black Ball is one of my musical highlights of the year. I highly encourage you to make it yours as well.

Day Trip in Austin: 10 Places To Visit Like a Tourist

December 1, 2021 by Yulia Dyukova 2 Comments

Day Trip in Austin: Even if you’ve been living in Austin your whole life, you can pretend to be a tourist for one day and discover the city with fresh eyes (Credit: Justin Snider/Rock Studios)

Let me start by stating the obvious: we live in one of the greatest cities in the world. Austin has so much to offer that my list of must-see places and must-do things keeps growing, even though I’m constantly exploring.

While I try to keep up with the latest restaurants and music festivals, there are a number of places in Austin I’ve been neglecting. You know, the kind of places at the top of TripAdvisor, where the tourists go.

So many times, I’ve thought of visiting these places, only to tell myself, “Oh, I live here. I can always go later.” For many people, years go by and they never make the time. But there are so many things that you could do just on a one day trip in Austin.

Looking for stores open on Thanksgiving Day in Austin? You are in the right place!

Thanksgiving is a day for celebrating all of the things we’re thankful for alongside our loved ones. While we all envision Thanksgiving as a day when we can sit at home all day and watch football while eating ourselves into a coma, it’s all too common to have to make runs to the store for batteries for the remote control, extra whipped cream, other turkey day or everyday essentials, or just for some great deals.

Thankfully, there are quite a few stores that remain open on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25th. Below is a breakdown of which Austin stores are open on Thanksgiving as well as which are closed for the holiday.

Austin Trail of Lights 2021 – Main Attractions, Tickets, & More

November 25, 2021 by Bill Tucker Leave a Comment

The holidays are upon us! With a year of general craziness in the rear view mirror, we need a little December cheer. If you’re in the same boat, look no further than the 57th annual Austin Trail of Lights at Zilker Park. While the event is drive thru instead of walk about, it’s still a wonderful opportunity to bask in the glow of holiday magic. Here’s everything you need to know to experience the trail right.

Austin Trail of Lights Is A Feast for the Eyes

Like last year, the Trail of Lights is 100% drive thru. While there’s no opportunity to spin under the Zilker tree, I respect their desire to keep people safe during the ongoing pandemic. Luckily, driving the trail doesn’t hurt the experience. The display is nothing short of spectacular.

Over two million lights illuminate the Zilker Park path. Old school favorites like the Jackalope, Santasaurus and Cartoon Land make an appearance once again. Seeing these classics brought back memories of my first Austin Christmas nearly 8 years ago and it was heartwarming listening to my son laugh at the sights.

One of the trails highlights are the multiple light tunnels that section off the trail. Driving underneath these massive structures was a blast. All in all, the trip, from the opening gate to end, took around 20 minutes which was perfect for the two kiddos in the van.

  • Passes to the trail are available right now but tend to sell out quickly, especially for peak evenings and weekends.
  • Passes will cost you $30 – $40 per vehicle depending on when you choose to go.
  • Dash Passes are available for $65. These allow you early entry between 5:45 and 7:00 PM and include holiday cookies and bottled water.
  • Entry is one pass per vehicle containing up to nine passengers. Vehicles that hold 10+ require two passes. And all vehicles need to be street legal.
  • While it’ll take about 20 minutes to experience the trail, leave ample time for queuing up and crowds. This year will be a busy one!
  • 90% of the lights and all of the attractions are on the passenger side of the vehicle. This helps the driver stay focused on the road, so if you have two kids, make them rock-paper-scissors for who gets to sit on the right.

  • 11/28 – Opening Night
  • Virtual Fun Run: The 10th annual Trail of Lights Fun Run goes virtual this year. Rather than jogging through the trail, you can pick a route, any route. Trail of Lights has a lovely route around Austin’s finest landmarks, or you can jog in your own neighborhood. Just make sure it’s fun and festive! Entrants receive a Fun Run t-short, a 2021 race bib, a rad swag bag and festive route recommendations.
  • 12/12 – UT Night
  • 12/28 to 12/29 – STARS at the Trail Night: The Trail of Lights team provides free entry to over 30 nonprofit partners in the Austin community. A great way to give back to organizations who give so much throughout the year. They also give thousands of passes to eligible families in the Austin Independent School District (AISD).
  • 12/31 – New Years Eve and the last night of the trail.

Trail of Lights – An Enduring Tradition

Whether it’s your first or 30th year, the Austin Trail of Lights is an enduring experience. While driving the park may not be same as walking it, cruising beneath a blanket of 2 million lights still captures the imagination and inspires holiday cheer. Come by yourself, as a couple, with friends, or a van full of kids. Everyone’s guaranteed to be delighted at this year’s Trail of Lights.
