13 Signs That Austin Has Ruined You

September 9, 2016 by Kristin Leigh 13 Comments

Step off the plane into Austin-Bergstrom Airport, and the wafting scent of Salt Lick BBQ is one of the first indicators this town is going to woo you. Try not to swoon over the unmistakable guitar riffs of Stevie Ray Vaughan ubiquitous in bars around town. And if your heart doesn’t do a back flip when gazing at the skyline from a grassy corner of Barton Springs, then you’re beyond help.

I had to leave Austin for it to sink in: living in this overgrown college town is something that ruins a person for living elsewhere. While it’s impossible to completely describe what makes this town so lovely to call home, here are some of the reasons I can never hang my hat anywhere else. [Read more…]

Austin Tiny Home Living: Minimizing Space to Maximize Freedom

August 31, 2016 by Jaclyn Hubersberger Leave a Comment

Austin Tiny Home Living

As a minimalist with an interest in sustainability, excited by the challenge of living in small spaces with a fear of geographical commitment, you could say I’m an ideal candidate for the tiny home lifestyle. But this wasn’t always the case.

Living in a space more than eight times smaller than the average American home didn’t appeal to me until I moved to Washington, D.C. in 2010, where the cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment was roughly $2,000 per month. In that market, my budget afforded me a studio apartment with less than 300 square feet. To my surprise, I found that not only could I tolerate life in a micro dwelling, but I liked it. The dramatic purging of my belongings ultimately led to a feeling of liberation, not deprivation.

When I stumbled upon the tiny house movement in 2012, I was smitten by the thought of designing my own miniature abode [Read more…]

We all have our list of guilty pleasures–the things we love though we know they’re not the best choice. As a trashy TV addict and baker, my personal list is at least a mile long. Thankfully, Avery Harris of Austin’s SAvery Grilled Cheese food truck has found a way to take the guilt out of one America’s favorite comfort foods, one cheesy bite at a time. [Read more…]

Austin-Based Esperanza Market Brings Hope to Nicaragua

March 9, 2016 by Eliza Weeks Leave a Comment

Esperanza Market Austin

With each product sold through Austin-based Esperanza Market, a Nicaraguan artisan is supported and a solar-powered lamp is donated to a Nicaraguan child

While teaching and traveling around Nicaragua, Jennifer Simonson, founder of Esperanza Market, noticed something peculiar. The parks and streets of the town she was visiting were filled with school-aged children in the middle of the school day.

This scene was not uncommon, Simonson had noticed it before: potential students wandered around when they should have been in the class room, yet school was in session. Eager to know why so many young people were missing out on education, she began to do her own personal investigation. Austin's Musical Men Open Up About Love

Guest article by Andi G. C.

What is love?

This is a question we’ve all asked ourselves at least once in our lives. Numerous authors have written on the matter; it is the theme of many movies; and a great number of musicians awaken our emotions when singing about the topic of love.

Since Austin is such a vibrant and energetic city, largely due to the abundant number of musicians who reside here, we thought it would be fun to shine light on several local male artists’ perception of love. This time it’s the guys’ turn to open up and share their feelings! [Read more…]
