Celebrating 45 Years of Austin Music Icon Asleep at the Wheel

What could possibly be more Austin iconic than breakfast tacos, bats and barbecue? Asleep at the Wheel is what.

Since 1974, the Grammy Award winning band has called Austin home and kept the sound of country western swing alive. Led by local legend Ray Benson, Asleep at the Wheel appeared on the first official episode of the first season of Austin City Limits TV in 1975.

2015 is poised to be another banner year for the band with an epic album release, induction to the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame and their 11th appearance on the Austin City Limits show 40 years after recording the first official episode. [Read more…]

There’s a vinyl revolution going on out there and Austin is neck deep in it. What once was relegated to hard core audio nerds and fans of the John Cusack/Jack Black cult classic movie High Fidelity has become – *gasp!* – trendy.

Cool new chic bars and hipster stores not only spin albums, but display and sell them. There’s even an official National Record Store Day (April 18th, get ready!). Every act that rolls through the Moody Theater or the Back Yard has a fat stack of vinyl goodness ready for you to take home.

The outside stage at Empire Control Room was buzzing with electricity. Five outstanding bands had been playing since 7:30. Feedback Alliance provided the between set beats while East Cameron Folkcore brought their brand of layered folk rock to the inside stage.

Everyone was stoked to hear headliner Quiet Company blow away East 7th with their signature brand of guitar driven indie rock. A celebration of their new record Transgressor, the band’s February 21st release concert featured new music and old favorites from a bonafide ATX original.

“One ticket left,” hummed the doorman at Stubb’s before Mayeux & Broussard’s album release show. The swampy tonk men who are Tate Mayeux (Vocals/Acoustic Guitar), Brian Broussard (Vocals/Lead Guitar), Taylor Englert (Drums), Misha ben-David (Bass) and Eddie Dickerson (Fiddle) effaced the rigid laws of genre pigeonholing with a riotous performance Saturday night.

Neither dull nor dainty, and nitty-gritty as Mayeux and Broussard’s humble beginnings in a metal band, the release show bargained for a Texan sprawl of spectators, which is exactly what it produced. With bouts of yeehaws and hollers in celebration of new album High Times & Good Rhymes recorded at Cedar Creek Studios with engineer John Ross Silva, the hometown show culminated after several years of grueling work on the road. Sometimes you see them flitting by in the wind on a city street like a brightly colored bird. Sometimes you see them posted on telephone poles. You see others on walls inside clubs.

I’m talking about music posters. While they are silent in sound, their designs portend grand audio and visual experiences to come, as bands perform at a certain time and place.

For poster collectors, the memories these powerful scraps of paper evoke can be potent. Colored lights, sounds, lyrics, emotions, jockeying for the best position to see the stage, that special night at a club that doesn’t exist anymore…except in your mind.

Albert Smith’s Unofficial SXSW Guide Facebook and Twitter accounts reach in excess of 80,000 fans

It all starts with your first SXSW showcase. For music industry veterans, you never forget it.

The year was 2007 and Amy Winehouse was creating headlines with a soulful performance at Stubb’s that ended with her in handcuffs. A tiny social media company was in town promoting a network that limited your entries to 140 characters (based around the old SMS limits, remember that!?).

And Albert Smith was putting together his first unofficial SXSW showcase at the Bayou Lounge. Seven years later, 19,000 people are following him on that “tiny” social network (Twitter, for those of you who haven’t caught on) and an additional 62,000+ like him on Facebook. [Read more…]
