“It doesn’t matter who you are, what you are, what you want out of life. It’s not about politics. It’s not about religion. It’s about humanity.”

Jeny Crouch didn’t claim Summer 2012 as her time to kick back and relax. Instead, she decided to lead a charge that began in Austin, but has spread literally around the world.

From June 20th to September 21st, Jeny is volunteering at least one hour every week to Moving Difference, a loose movement with a profound purpose. [Read more…]

Young Professionals Party for the Ronald McDonald House in Austin

May 29, 2012 by Brittany Highland 5 Comments

Young professionals support Ronald McDonald House AustinEvery non-profit needs a support network. In a recent article, I unearthed the fact that Austin’s Ronald McDonald House Charities relies largely on local donations to keep its doors open and continue to serve ill children and their families.

Since then, I became friends with Friends of the House. Friends of the House is a group of young professionals that organized in Austin five years ago. Their mission is to raise awareness for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin (RMHC) and support RMHC with volunteer hours and donations. [Read more…]

May 28, 2012 by Brittany Highland Leave a Comment

Little boy bicycling in AustinHow would you like to save 10% off a meal, just for riding your bike to a local Austin restaurant? I’m happy to report that Austin’s first annual Bike-to-Eat Week lets you do just that!

Through this Thursday, ride your bike to any of 25 participating locations to receive a discount on food and alcohol. To get your discount, you may be required to show that you arrived by bike.

This program is designed to support the cycling community in Austin, and encourage you to ride your bicycle. Besides a cheaper meal, you’ll get stronger legs and a stronger cardiovascular system out of the deal. And, of course, you’ll lessen your environmental impact by riding instead [Read more…]

North Austin Trailer Yard Opens at W. Anderson & Lamar

May 17, 2012 by Brittany Highland 20 Comments

Grand opening of North Austin Trailer YardEDITOR’S NOTE: NATY officially closed, with the last truck leaving July 8, 2013. We were sad to see it go and feel that North Austin really needs a permanent home for the food truck community.

Last Saturday, the North Austin Trailer Yard (NATY) opened up at W. Anderson and Lamar Blvd. – in the Planet Fitness parking lot.

Austinites swarmed to the city’s newest food truck conglomeration to exercise their taste buds and see the haps.

The food trailers currently located at NATY are:

  • Snarky's Moo Baa Oink at NATYJohnny T’s BBQ (Mouthwatering Texas BBQ)
  • Snarky’s Moo Baa Oink (sandwiches)
  • KraK2 (gourmet doughnuts)
  • Genuine Joe (coffee and fresh smoothies)
  • Big Fat Greek Gyros (traditional Greek food)

Concert at the Capitol – Your Mother’s Day Event In Austin

May 10, 2012 by Dustin Vegas Leave a Comment

Moms are great. Stop for a second and think about how much yours has sacrificed to raise you. Now remember: this Sunday is Mother’s Day.

Are you looking for worthwhile Mother’s Day events in Austin? More specifically, are you doing it on the cheap? Good news — The Austin Symphonic Band is playing a free live show on the Capitol steps this Sunday. This is a chance for you to give your mother the time she deserves while saving a few bucks!

The Austin Symphonic Band is the official band of the City of Austin. It came around in the early 1980s as a way for local Austinites to come together and play music for themselves and the public. The band has been extremely popular over the past thirty years, and now it draws large crowds for every show.

You can catch the Austin Symphonic Band playing in many different places, depending on the time of year, because they love to play free open air shows for the public whenever possible. They are regulars at [Read more…]

Ronald McDonald House is a Quiet Hero for Families in Need

May 7, 2012 by Brittany Highland 6 Comments

Ronald McDonald House Charities of AustinIf you have ever had a loved one sick with a serious illness, you know how life is turned upside down. Your ability to work is impeded by worry, and day-to-day necessities like eating and sleeping take the back burner to the nurturing of the one you care about. Having a sick child may be the most devastating scenario of all.

What if there was an organization that cared for families with sick or injured children, and met every one of their needs? What if that organization went the extra mile to provide all kinds of comforts, as a service to suffering families?

That organization exists. It’s in your community and you can be a part of it.

A few weeks ago, Austinot Eric and I had the privilege of touring the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Austin. Although both of us had volunteered at other Ronald McDonald Houses in the past, I had an incomplete picture of how RMHC functions and how much it provides for the community. [Read more…]

Superhero Kids: An Austin Non-Profit Helping Families

April 25, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 17 Comments

Let me tell you about an amazing Austin-based non-profit organization. They work hard every day to improve the lives of people who need them most.

Recently, I was introduced to this group of kindhearted Austinites, known as Superhero Kids. They quietly assist children and families who have been affected by cancer and blood disorders.

Founded in December 2009, Superhero Kids works to improve the quality of life of children and their families at the Children’s Blood and Cancer Center of Central Texas, at Dell Children’s Hospital. Their other primary purpose is to make Austin aware of the progress made in the name of children battling life-threatening illnesses. [Read more…]
