Imperial Augsburg Renaissance print, on display at Blanton Museum of Art

This guest blog article is by Jamie Deangelo.

If you ever wanted to see an unflattering portrait of Charles V or know what a 15th century indulgence looks like, here’s your chance to find out. Imperial Augsburg: Renaissance Prints and Drawings, is on view at the Blanton Museum of Art now through January 5, 2014.

This exhibition takes up four rooms and features about 100 woodcut prints and engravings, as well as a few coins and two small helmets. The artworks on display come from 15th century Augsburg, an imperial free city and one of the centers of the German print boom. The show highlights some of the biggest names of [Read more…]

The Ultimate Guide to Austin Beer Week 2013

Posted on October 23, 2013 by Edgar Barguiarena

512 Brewing Company Beer

Prosit!

Austin Beer Week (def): held shortly after Great American Beer Festival (GABF), a week dedicated to all things craft beer in the great city of Austin Texas, whereas brewers who are just getting over their GABF hangover celebrate their craft with the rest of the city during special keg tappings, meet-the-brewer sessions, anniversary parties, and the inevitable hangover or four.

On the brink of a record-setting run at the Great American Beer Festival (the granddaddy of all U.S. beer competitions) Austin is gearing up for its biggest week in beer yet. Six of the 10 Texas medals were earned by folks in the Austin area, including 2 gold medals (!). So you can be sure our favorite brewers are putting out their best stuff yet. Texas is still only 6th in medal count, but we are going up against the original regions that have always been known for craft beer. Given how young our breweries are, this is an impressive achievement. [Read more…]

Savor Cozy Italian Vibe at Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria Downtown

Posted on October 17, 2013 by Matthew Champion

Frank and Angie's Pizzeria

Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria on West Ave., just off W. 6th Street

Editor’s Note: Frank & Angie’s shuttered in 2018.

Frank and Angie’s Pizzeria is fondly regarded by many Austinites, but somehow it manages to retain its undiscovered charm, year after year. I’ve never had to wait for a table here, and I’ve also never had a bad experience. It has everything you could want in your go-to Italian place: small, cozy, rarely crowded, cheesy décor, friendly staff, good food, fair prices, and big portions.

History

Frank and Angie’s was opened nearly twenty years ago by the same folks who run Hut’s Hamburgers around the corner. The founders stayed true to their ancestors with authentic Sicilian recipes. They’ve changed very little over time, as far as the menu goes. You can order a lot of the same items today that patrons enjoyed on opening day. [Read more…]

Can You Contain Your Enthusiasm at Eastside’s In.gredients?

Posted on October 11, 2013 by Guest Blogger

In.gredients Austin

Editor’s Note: Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign to buoy the struggling business, in.gredients closed on April 27, 2018.

This guest blog post is by Sean Lords.

Local foodies in Austin have always had it a little easier than likeminded folks in other cities – for at least as long as Whole Foods has called the city home. But however “local” Whole Foods may be, its corporate product packaging has failed to sit well with certain Austinites.

In response, the Lane brothers (Joseph, Patrick, and Christian, along with Christopher Pepe) turned their dream of living more sustainably into the first “package-free, zero-waste grocery store” in the United States: in.gredients. [Read more…]

Increase Child Literacy Across Austin with BookSpring

Solve Illiteracy

Texas has a lot to be proud of. We have a booming economy, a rich history, and some of the greatest people you’re likely to meet. Despite all of the great qualities of the Lone Star State, we have a number of issues that need addressing.

One of these problems is the staggeringly low literacy rates in Texas cities. Roughly twenty percent of Austinites cannot read a newspaper. Luckily, we have connected with a group of people dedicated to solve this problem.

With your help, we can help eliminate illiteracy in Austin.

BookSpring: Reading Is Fundamental

Kids who cannot read well by the fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. This is a dangerous trap for young Texans preparing to enter the workforce. There is hope, though. A group of literacy warriors at BookSpring have been combating this problem at its source. BookSpring reaches out to low-income communities and gives children the opportunity to fall in love with reading. [Read more…]

New Movement in Austin: BAM Academy Offers Unique Classes and Open Gym

Posted on October 2, 2013 by David Thomas

Tracy Barksdale and Matthew Wills at BAM Academy

BAM Academy co-owners, Tracy Barksdale and Matthew Willis

Editor’s Note: As of June 2016, BAM Academy has two locations at 8222 N. Lamar Blvd. Suite F51-54 and 113 Industrial Blvd. Suite C-1.

The humidity rolled through BAM Academy and settled over us like the thick crocheted blanket that used to adorn my grandmother’s plastic covered couch. A series of shop fans stoically performed their intended task.

I took in my surroundings. There were four or five lanes of springboard floor butted against a large gymnastics foam pit with five foot walls. Off to the side were a couple of pipe structures reminiscent of construction scaffolding or, perhaps, incomplete jungle gyms.

On the far side of BAM Academy were three walls that varied in height: six, eight and ten feet tall. Next to them was a narrower version of American Ninja Warrior’s warped wall. I was surprised by the spaciousness of the space as a whole. [Read more…]

Imagine a luxurious retreat into fantasy and wonder. The lanterns flicker as you descend into a realm of exotic music and sights. It is an empire of decadence and earthly delights.

Now imagine experiencing all this – the dancers winking at you, the food and laughter – here in Austin. Imagine that it is your chance to do a bit of good while exploring the cultures of far away lands.

On Wednesday, September 25th, Austin Influential Group is hosting The Dream of the Red Chamber. If you have never heard of the Austin Influential Group, you are really missing out. They are a team of Austin-loving individuals who do big things that make the ATX weird and wonderful.

The Dream of the Red Chamber event is a dive into the seductive world of opium dens and hedonism. More importantly, though, it is a benefit [Read more…]

Spicy Mama Salsa Packs Punch with Non-Profit Twist

Spicy Mama Salsa Royal Blue Grocery

Spicy Mama Salsa at Royal Blue Grocery

Austinite Rebecca Contreras created Spicy Mama Salsa because friends and family loved her homemade salsa and thought other people would love it too.

If the story ended there, Spicy Mama Salsa wouldn’t be much different from the dozens of other new local products that spring into bottles and packages near you on a monthly basis.

But in my line of work, I’ve learned that everyone has a deeper story to tell – the story of what inspires them to keep going when inevitable challenges arise. After learning Spicy Mama Salsa’s deeper story for myself, I thought it was unique and important enough to share with you. Read on!

Why Spicy Mama Salsa Exists [Read more…]

“Most guys talk about opening a bar of some sort when they get out,” said Jason White, one of the owners of Brass House.

Frankestein's Monster at Toy Joy Art Show

Rita Prater’s “Frankenstein’s Monster” is all cross stitch!

This guest blog article is by Lizzy Newsome.

It’s been a pretty bizarre year for the folks at Toy Joy, but this month it looks like some things are returning to normal. If you can call the artistic antics of this eclectic toy store normal. Just a couple months after relocating to the heart of downtown Austin, Toy Joy is returning to tradition with the return of their annual art show.

Originally started as a way to encourage the artistically minded store employees to display their works, the Toy Joy Art Show is now in its fifth year of pop culture themed display. Contributing artists have expanded to include former employees, customers, and outside artists of all experience levels. The show strives to be as visually fun as possible [Read more…]
