Welcome to the almost weekend, Austinites! With the biggest festival of the year officially less than a month away, it’s time to run downtown and check out some music before the tourists invade. This weekend, we recommend delightful garage rock/pop, a split EP celebration, and an Americana act’s latest record release.
Enjoy the weekend and always listen local!

Space Tan w/Marmalakes, Batty Jr., Large Brush Collection
@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event
Breezy garage pop full of catchy hooks and playful lyrics, Space Tan could be the best “new to me” band I’ve heard in 2020. Songs like “I’m Never Gonna Sleep Again” scurry across fervent guitar riffs, while “Continental” eases on the gas pedal with a laid-back vibe buoyed by a dreamy sing-song chorus.
Channeling a true DYI spirit into cleverly crafted tunes, Space Tan feels pure and lovely. Support these Ausutin originals as they embark on their latest musical adventure.

Mamahawk & Midcentury Split 7-inch Release w/Caelin
@ Mohawk (912 Red River) – 9 p.m. – Tickets
When two bands with similar DNA join forces to create sensational music, the world should stand and take notice. The connective tissue between groove indie rock acts Mamahawk and Midcentury are tight. The former’s classic funk jam “Lioness” delivers substantial dance floor boogie, where the latter’s latest single “Sinking State” sings of where lovers head when the party dies down.
But it’s not all good times for either band. From Mamahawk’s haunting electro-ballad “Sidewinder” to Midcentury’s ’90s-style rocker “Revolve,” variety abounds. Expect a stylish and exciting 7-inch from this one-two punch of musical heroes.
The Haberdashers album release show w/ Harvest Thieves, Milk Toast Millie, The Scabby Knees
@ Hole in the Wall (2538 Guadalupe) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event
Down-home Americana played with authenticity and skill, The Haberdashers is one of those pleasant surprises that makes this article series so much fun.
“Peach,” off the brand new record “As Luck Would Have It,” jumps with a four-on-the-floor railroad rhythm, while “Jeff” snaps along a swinging bass lick and tricky guitar picking. A must-listen and -attend for those who dig top-shelf country/rock-a-blues.
