Another weekend, another roundup of rad local music. If you’re graduating this weekend, then congrats! Celebrate your newfound independence with some killer music. This time around, we recommend a stellar hip hop showcase, world class electronic, and a cumbia band dedicated to good vibes and positivity. Enjoy the weekend and listen local!
Friday, May 10
KUTX Presents: The Breaks Live w/The Teeta, Grizz
Empire Control Room (606 E. 7th St.) – 9 p.m. – Tickets
Austin’s premier hip hop radio show, The Breaks, celebrates graduation week with a one-two punch of lyric-spitting goodness. Despite my East Coast upbringing and bias, The Teeta’s sleepy trap beats and slippery slick delivery blend Ambien flow and machine gun pop to create an interesting and effective sound.
Couple that with Grizz, a similarly diggable melange of lyrical fire and slow-rolling beats, and you have a firebrand pair prepared to blast Empire Control Room to the stratosphere.
Note: This show is RSVP only, but if you arrive in cap and gown, entry will run you a slim dollar.
MISSIO w/ Blackillac, Swells
Emo’s (2015 E. Riverside Dr.) – 8 p.m. – Tickets
Keeping on the electronic, rhythms vibe, local favorite MISSIO returns to ATX for a blast furnace set at Emo’s. With over 37 million listens on Spotify, classics like “Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea” and “Everybody Gets High” are world renowned for their combination of emotion-soaked imagery and neck-snapping musicianship.
The latest record, “The Darker The Weather // The Better The Man” elevates the group’s sound to new avenues of synth-driven rhythm and rhyme.
“Rad Drugz” explores the downward spiral of drug abuse in an upbeat ’80s New Wave dance jam, while “I See You” softens with longing and yearning. A wonderful follow up to “Loner” that’ll prove overwhelmingly powerful this Friday night.
Also playing are hip hop luminaries Blackillac and pop/rock duo Swells.
Saturday, May 11
Superfónicos
Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River St.) – 7:30 p.m. – Facebook event
I’ve been tapping a ton of words on this band (and will be typing more soon), but it’s for good reason. In this world of uncertainty and cynicism, we need positivity to keep us rolling. Enter the heart-filling cumbia/Latin soul of mega group Superfónicos.
The band’s Saturday set at Mexican Cultural Center celebrates the release of latest singles “Cumbealo” and “Tropidelico.” Both recorded in one take with no overdubs, these tunes deliver the raw energy and drive of Superfónicos’ live performances.
Billed as a musical representation of American’s patchwork heritage and a shift from our digital lives to the spiritual, the tunes promise an evolution of the band’s beautiful sound.
Expect more on Superfónicos later this month, while you prep for the show this coming Saturday.
