Happy Thursday, Austin! A wonderful weekend of live, local music awaits those hungry for something to hear, so let’s jump right into it. This weekend, we recommend groovy blues, a shoegaze showcase, and old-fashioned rock and roll. Enjoy the weekend, fellow Austinites.

Jackie Myers Band w/Mack Daddies, Rent Party
@ Stay Gold (1910 E. Cesar Chavez) – 10 p.m. – Free
Blues and soul have been the bedrock of Austin music for decades, and Jackie Myers Band continues that tradition in fine style. Using only bass, drums, keys, and voice, Myers’ sound is stripped down and soulful, allowing her rich, powerful voice to sit front and center. Tunes like “Bad Bad Tree” bounce and dance with a Caribbean flow, while “You Get Too Close” bumps with pure soul and funk. A fun and groovy way to spend your Friday night.
Saturday, Jan. 27
Blushing album release w/Ringo Deathstarr, Single Lash, All in the Afternoon
@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River St.) – 9 p.m.
’80s shoegaze act Blushing celebrates its upcoming album release with an evening of dreamy rock. Thanks to the lush two-part harmonies of Christina Carmona and Michelle Soto, Blushing’s sound is like a warm blanket on a chilly afternoon. Buoyant without being poppy, thoughtful without being moody, Blushing’s music strikes a delicate, wonderful balance. Also playing are the fellow dream rockers of Ringo Deathstarr, Single Lash, and All in the Afternoon.
Darkbird w/ Belcurve
@ The ABGB (1305 W. Oltorf St.) – 9 p.m.
One of my “must see” bands from last year’s SXSW Music Festival, Darkbird’s theatrical, powerful rock sound continues to impress. Lasts year’s single, “Bad Self,” struts and swaggers like a Sweet Spirit tune, complete with lead singer Kelly Barnes’ explosive vocals. If you dig crunchy, melodic rock, then it doesn’t get much better than Darkbird. Also playing: indie folk/pop act Belcurve.
