The weekend is right around the corner, and with it a host of local music to listen to. This week, we take a turn for the rootsy, country side of Austin music. Long the musical bedrock of this fine city, this week’s picks may have you pining for the quiet streets and backwoods hoedowns of Austin’s yesteryear. Enjoy and, as always, listen local!
Friday April 28
Barbara Nesbitt w/Denny Freeman and Courtney Patton
@ Saxon Pub (1320 S. Lamar Blvd.)
Country songstress Barbara Nesbitt brings her soulful brand of roots country to the legendary Saxon Pub. With smooth vocals and a knack for delivering simple emotion with strength and conviction, Nesbitt is a must-see act for fans of traditional Austin music. Also playing are Texas country artist, Courtney Patton, and legendary Austin blues guitarist, Denny Freeman.
Saturday, April 29
Emily Bell & the Talkbacks w/ Zeale and The Warplanes
@ 3Ten Austin City Limits Live (310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd. #1a)
Brash and aggressive, with vocals the size of an airplane hangar, Emily Bell’s celebration of her newest record, “Kali,” requires attendance. From the female empowerment anthem “Girls That Never Die,” to the head-swinging rock of “Can’t Talk Back,” the album is a powder keg of firmly packed sound. Also playing are hip-hop lyricist, Zeale, and indie rockers, The Warplanes.
Sunday, April 30
Harvest Thieves w/Elijah Ford, Jonathan Terrell, John Evans, Kevin Galloway
@ Barracuda (611 E. 7th St.)
Country/folk/bluegrass act, Harvest Thieves, shares the stage with a host of pickers and players this Sunday at Barracuda. Clever lyrics and old fashioned four on the floor rhythm centerpiece the Harvest Thieves sound. I caught them at a Black Fret event last year, and have been wanting to see them again ever since. Also playing are Americana rocker, Elijah Ford, country crooner and Not In The Face frontman, Jonathan Terrell, Austin based country/rockabilly songwriter, John Evans, and singer/songwriter, Kevin Galloway.
