With Independence Day in the rearview mirror and another summer scorcher on the horizon, it’s time to chill out with our weekend concert picks. This time around, we present a high-energy power pop foursome, a “math-folk” act celebrating an EP release, and a rock star turned roots country crooner. Enjoy the weekend and, as always, listen local!
Friday, July 7
Soaked w/Teenage Cavegirl
@ Hotel Vegas (1502 E. 6th St.) – 9 p.m.
A band that barely missed my SXSW 2017 Top 15 list, Soaked’s machine gun power punk will peel the paint off Hotel Vegas’ walls. Thrashing guitar leads balance lead singer Maxx Eaton’s pop-friendly tenor, creating a sound full of ear-candy hooks and pure rock-n-roll energy. Also playing is brooding fuzz rock two-some, Teenage Cavegirl.
Saturday, July 8
Hikes EP Release w/Boyfrndz, Smile
@ Swan Dive (615 Red River St.) – 9 p.m. – $8
A beautifully blended milkshake of tender melodies, hyper-technical drums, and mournful, plaintive lyrics, Hikes bends genres into pretzels. The group’s new EP, “Lit,” is a marvel of touching soundscapes interrupted by thunderstorms of guitar blare and mile-a-minute percussion. A true journey worth taking and experiencing live. Also playing are the hard rockers in Boyfrndz and the easy breezy pop groove of Smile.
Sunday, July 9
Jonathan Terrell w/Paul Nipper, Elsa Cross
@ Spider House Ballroom (2908 Fruth St.) – 8 p.m. – $5+
After seeing country singer/songwriter Jonathan Terrell (also lead in local band, Not in the Face) last week at Antone’s, I’m glad I have the chance to talk up his next show at Spider House. One of the hardest working acts in Austin, Terrell’s gritty, against the grain lyrics play well with his core roots Americana sound. Also playing are singer/songwriter, Paul Nipper, and country songstress, Elsa Cross.
