Another week in the books. Time to get out on the town and dig live, local music! When you have a city chock-full of impressive shows, there’s no excuse not to! This weekend, we recommend an eclectic Austin music showcase, a trio of local electronic producers, and a pop show too rad to ignore. Enjoy the music, enjoy the weekend, and keep it local!
Friday, April 20
Last Ride at The Blackheart w/Ume, Quiet Company, BLXPLTN, Basketball Shorts, Darkbird, BOOHER
@ The Blackheart (86 Rainey St.) – 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. – Free
How many incredible Austin bands can The Blackheart pack into a relatively small space? Evidently, quite a lot! Six of Austin’s finest acts will be gracing both indoor and outdoor stages on Friday at Rainey Street’s whiskey retreat. Come for the punch to the guy rock and roll of Quiet Company; stick around for Darkbird’s dramatic indie rock; and don’t miss the aggressive, politically-charged slam rap of BLXPLTN. If I wasn’t flying to New Jersey on Friday, I’d be here, saying goodbye to this Rainey Street music venue.
Saturday, April 21
Corduroi w/Memory Keepers, Curved Light, Little Beards
@ Beerland (711 1/2 Red River St.) – 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. (door 9 p.m.)
Supplying the soundtrack to a surreal and spellbinding SXSW 2018 showcase, local electronic artist Corduroi made a lasting impression. Solid groove and synth vamps are punctuated with a sublime mix of warbled vocals, cutting percussion, and the occasional woodwind. Expect chill music with depth and nuance. Eighties goth synth act Memory Keepers and ambient dreamscape artist Curved Light round out the bill.
SMiiLE w/Kady Rain, Shiela
@ Scoot Inn (1308 E. 4th St.) – 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. – Tickets
Three fantastic acts under one historic roof equals an incredible evening of music. By wrapping ’60s bop in a blanket of off-kilter time signatures, sweet vocals, and experimental pop, SMiiLE’s sound is random without being obnoxious. In fact, it’s exhilarating and fascinating. Also on the marquee is ATX pop princess (and winner of my SXSW 2018 Biggest Suprise award) Kady Rain and alt-R&B songstress Shiela.
