Celebrate Autumn at Sweet Berry Farm with Fun Activities

“I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.” –Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1842

I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Hawthorne, and I’m convinced he was specifically talking about autumn in the Hill Country. Fall here is its own unique kind of wonderful.

Maybe it’s the way the hills light up as the sun sets and gives way to cooler nights, or maybe it’s the fact that we feel like we’ve waited an eternity for some sort of relief from the sweltering heat, anything that would allow us to wear boots and scarves and flannel shirts. (You know dressing up is your favorite thing about fall, too.) [Read more…]

Kids Learn Video Game Development at Game Worlds

Game Worlds Video Game Camp for Kids in Austin

Lab time at Game Worlds (Credit: Alicia Andrew)

When I was a kid, video games like Nintendo and Atari were thought of as time wasters and brain drainers. Since then, they have developed into amazing pieces of creative art.

What hasn’t changed are parents wanting their kids to do something in the summer besides playing video games.

If a compromise can’t be made, or you want to focus your child’s interest towards something productive, I recommend Game Worlds. [Read more…]

Our Day of Exploration at Space Center Houston

Saturn V Rocket Space Center Houston

Dwarfed and inspired by the Saturn V rocket at Space Center Houston

We’ve been on the road with the kids since last month, vacationing in areas not too far from Austin. I’ll be selecting some of the highlights to share with you this summer, in hopes that you’ll make a day trip yourself!

Last week, we stayed on Lake Conroe, north of Houston. Our friends at Buick were kind enough to lend us a 2013 Enclave for all of our adventuring – a vehicle large enough to fit six people, a large cooler, and our luggage.

On travel days that saw temperature spikes of up to 109 degrees, [Read more…]

Austin Reptile Shows Wrangles Reptiles With Kids

September 10, 2012 by Eric Highland 2 Comments

Michael Foux of Austin Reptile Shows

Michael Foux of Austin Reptile Shows holds Titus the tortoise

Mesmerized by a school presentation when he was in third grade, a little boy began a lifelong love affair with reptiles.

The little boy, Michael Foux of Austin Reptile Shows, grew up and got married. Now he and his wife, Christie, are trying to build an enclosure for their friend Titus, an African Spur Tortoise who can grow to over 200 pounds.

Oh, and there’s also the little matter of the 60 or so other reptiles that live in their house, as part of their growing collection.

Schlitterbahn – New Braunfels: Ultimate Water Park Experience

August 15, 2012 by Guest Blogger 3 Comments

Schlitterbahn West Water Park Castle

This guest post is by Allen Schowengerdt.

4:30 a.m. Kids wake up.

5:00 a.m. Kids back to bed after a struggle and a small bribe.

6:00 a.m. Kids awake again. It’s clear they’re not going back to bed.

6:30 a.m. We manage to make our way from under the covers, due largely to the automatic coffee pot we set the previous night.

Christmas morning, you ask? Nah. Only the biggest day of our summer vacation and our trek an hour south of Austin to New Braunfels and the greatest water park in the world: Schlitterbahn. [Read more…]

Guest Blog: My Top 5 Favorite Parks in Austin

Brushy Creek Park in North Austin

Brushy Creek Park, my top pick

This guest blog post is by Ashly Howard.

As a mother of three, I want to make sure my children have just as much fun at the park as I do at the casino. I want to make sure their hair blows in the wind and their minds race deciding what they want to do next, as they explore their magical plastic wonderland.

But I may be a bit overprotective when deciding which park to take them to, and I do my research ten-fold. Though I want to get my children out of the house as much as possible, I don’t want to take them to a place that’s dirty or infested, or that is so busy that it’s impossible to keep up. [Read more…]
