Hell Marys at the 2012 Season Opener of the Texas RollergirlsFlat track roller derby was invented in Austin, so you better believe that the Texas Rollergirls are experts. You know who else is an expert? Austinot Eric Highland.

Well, at least that’s what he’d like you to believe. The reality is that Eric has never been to a bout before, but he’s going to get his chance tomorrow night when we watch the Texas Rollergirls at the Austin Convention Center. (Click HERE for details on that.)

This week’s episode of the Austinot Podcast is all about the Texas Rollergirls and the sport of flat track derby. This Austinot Music Podcast episode is very exciting for me personally. Why? Today I have the pleasure of sharing some music from Austin musicians, the Rocketboys.

I started listening to the Rocketboys when they formed in Abilene, Texas years ago. Their powerful music, tumultuous history, and journey to settling in Austin has earned the Rocketboys a place among my favorite featured bands.

The Rocketboys were the soundtrack to my growing up. Over the years, I have watched the band develop a complex and emotional voice. With a style ranging from powerful and sweeping to fragile and melodic, the Rocketboys have spent the past seven years crafting a sound that is their own. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #2: Da Di Da

Hearing a truly eclectic band is always a breath of fresh air for me. I spend a lot of my time sifting through bands who, though talented, find it hard to deviate from time-tested genres. So my ears perked when I heard my roommate listening to Da Di Da one day. I asked what genre they were, and the best description she could give was, “a kind of jazz-rock with a lot of storytelling.”

I walked to my room to download Da Di Da’s EP, and I soon realized just how right she was. [Read more…]

Kick Butt Coffee Closed In Triangle; Still Kickin On Airport

March 26, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 16 Comments

In the words of Douglas Adams: “Don’t panic.” Kick Butt Coffee is not closed for good. It just left The Triangle and went back to its roots.

Kick Butt Coffee’s empty space in The Triangle stands out like a missing tooth. The coffee shop’s here-today-gone-tomorrow departure has left a lot of people scratching their heads: “Is the business gone forever?”

Thankfully, the answer is no. Kick Butt Coffee’s Triangle location is gone, due to unfortunate financial circumstances. However, their Airport Blvd. location remains all the more kickin’.

I first wandered into the doors of Kick Butt Coffee on Airport almost three years ago. I was in the throes of a hard night’s [Read more…]

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble! – Boxing in Texas

February 10, 2012 by Eric Highland Leave a Comment

HBO-Boxing-TexasBoxing, or the “Sweet Science” as it is called by lovers of the sport, is all over Texas.  Have you ever been to a professional fight?  Let me describe it for you…

The atmosphere is electric, the tension palpable and the first time you hear Lupe Contreras say, “It’s time to see who’s mas macho!” Jimmy Lennon Jr say, “It’s Showtime,” or Michael Buffer with his signature “Let’s get ready to rumble!” you’ll get immediately hooked into this world of the professional pugilist.

There is nothing like sitting ringside at a professional fight, nothing. [Read more…]

Austin Carriage Presents Austin Tours of Downtown

February 9, 2012 by Brittany Highland 7 Comments

Austin-Carriage-Brittany-Highland-Austinot

Recently we were INVITED to check out Austin Carriage, the original horse-drawn carriage company in the city of Austin.

These folks, who provide Austin tours via horse-drawn carriage, are fantastic.  And no, they haven’t paid us a penny to say this.

So read on, fellow Austinot, and learn a little more about this company and what they are all about.

First off, let us tell you about the owner Cherie Cunningham.  She’s been in the horse business since she was knee-high to a grasshopper. And given the chance she will animatedly tell you stories, with a sparkle in her eye, about her childhood growing up around horses.  It is obvious that she has a love and respect for the horses she works with and [Read more…]

Austin Film Meet Mixer

February 7, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Stompin-Grounds-Coffee-&-Cocktail-LoungeIn our Facebook wanderings, we came across a Facebook event for the Austin Film Meet’s February mixer. Eric posted on the event wall and received a warm response from Anthony Spears – who runs the Austin Film Meet’s social networking accounts – so we decided to give it a shot.

The Austin Film Meet holds monthly mixers for networking and it seems to be a very friendly and supportive community for visual media folks in ATX. [Read more…]

Gorgeous Saturday Morning at the Austin Farmers Market

January 30, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Austin-Farmers-MarketA windy bike ride down the Drag and through downtown brought us to the Austin Farmers Market this past Saturday morning. The Market runs every Saturday from 9 AM-1 PM at Guadalupe and 4th (Republic Square Park). You can’t miss it.

Seattle (where the Austinot moved from at the end of 2011) has an extraordinary number of farmers markets year-round and takes great pride in every one. My personal opinion is that the Austin Farmers Market rivals or surpasses what I experienced in Seattle.

Fruits and vegetables, bread and bakery items, meat, honey, cheeses…the Austin Farmers Market has it all. [Read more…]
