Austin Food Scene News: Bess Bistro Gets a New Look

Editor’s Note: Bess Bistro is scheduled to close on September 20, 2015.

Bess Bistro has been a landmark in Austin for the past eight years. They have seen the city through many changes, and now they’re shaking things up themselves. With a new Executive Chef, Roman Murphy, Bess Bistro has unveiled a new fall menu to tantalize the Austin foodie’s ever-changing taste buds.

This West 6th restaurant is known for their Southern style cooking with a French/New Orleans flare. But now Chef Murphy is expanding diners’ options, taking advantage of Austin’s growing love for farm to table, locally sourced food while introducing Asian and Spanish elements.

If you’re a regular, don’t fret. The Sautéed Mussels, Shrimp and Grits and delectable Beignets have stood the test of time and you will still find them on the menu. And their fresh breads, accompanied by an array of salts and butter, still come from their sister restaurant, Walton’s. But Bess Bistro has added flavorful dishes such as Beef Tartare, Pan Roasted Grouper, Duck Breast and Poached Panna Cotta, to name a few.

New Menu Items

I was able to preview many of the new menu items at Bess Bistro earlier this week. The Duck Breast was pleasantly simple and cooked perfectly. I’m oddly allergic to sweet potatoes – yes, sweet potatoes – so I wasn’t able to fully enjoy this dish the way it’s meant to be served. You’ll normally be able to enjoy the plate with sweet potato purée, brown butter-roasted salsify and huckleberry demi, an amazing explosion of flavors.

I have to make note about the gnocchi that accompanies the Pan Roasted Grouper. It’s hard to make gnocchi that doesn’t sit in your stomach like a brick, yet the gnocchi at Bess was superb. It is also gluten free, for those looking for that dietary option.

Of course, I finished my tasting with the best beignets in town. How can you not try them? They came on my plate at the perfect temperature and consistency.

Not only did Bess Bistro update its menu, but the location also updated the rooftop patio bar, taking advantage of a unique building that dates back to 1918. The restaurant has plans to host more events, wine tastings and happy hours, so keep your eye on their Facebook page for updates.

You’re Invited: Fall Menu Preview

If you’re interested in previewing Bess Bistro’s fall menu, call now to make reservations for a special tasting taking place on September 25, 2014 at 6:30 PM. The event is $75 per person.

No matter what day it is, you can swing by 500 W 6th St to rediscover this oldie but goodie, and take advantage of their unique outdoor patio as the fall weather (slowly) moves in.
