Ultimate Guide to Local Artists at Austin City Limits Music Festival 2019

Posted on September 30, 2019 by Bill Tucker

Guide to Austin Artists at ACL Music Festival 2019

Every year, as September turns to October, the eyes and ears of the entertainment world turn toward Zilker Park. Now in its 17th year, Austin City Limits Music Festival turns the Great Lawn into a cultural and musical epicenter. It’s 46 acres of food, drink, activities, installations, shopping, and–most prominently–incredible live music performances.

While headliners like The Cure, Billie Ellish, Lizzo, and Guns ‘n Roses dominate the billboards, the bottom of the lineup poster is where the magic of discovery happens. Like every year, Austin bands and artists will be well-represented in 2019, both in the early hours and prime time slots.

Here’s a roundup of every Austin musician performing each weekend, all worth arriving early for. Remember friends, listen local!

“She wanted to know if she had to be present to win our raffle,” James Whelan of SIMS Foundation told me. “She hadn’t been out since the death of her husband, and she wasn’t sure how long she would be able to stay.” He went on to share that later that night, he saw her lost in the music, dancing. To him, that moment showed just how important live music is to the people of Austin.

It’s 7:30 in the evening on a random Wednesday and Little Woodrow’s at Southpark Meadows is rocking. As smokey Colombian rhythm mainlines into my ears, my right leg refuses to quit jumping to the beat. A perma-smile is plastered to my face. With a quietly attentive Black Fret crowd behind me, everyone seems transfixed by the soulful, haunting sound of cumbia, salsa, and Latin jazz.

Who Wins the SXSW Music 2019 Superlative Awards?

Posted on March 21, 2019 by Bill Tucker

SXSW Music 2019 Superlative Awards

And just like that, it’s over. By the time you read this, the stages will be gone; streets once bulging with scooter-riding tourists will relax; and the city will deflate to normal. All we’ll have is our Instagram stories, swag bags filled with koozies, and the memory of 10 wild days of art, tech, film, and music.

For me, it’s all about SXSW Music. Over the course of six days, I saw over 20 bands, most of which were locals. Some well-known; some just discovered; all of them awesome in their own special way. As I do every year, I invent a random slate of awards you’d normally find in a high school yearbook to celebrate our hometown heroes. And the winners of this year’s Superlative Awards are… [Read more…]

Kady Rain Show at Historic Scoot Inn Austin

Kady Rain’s sparkling set at Historic Scoot Inn was an evening of high energy fun and beautiful music

From the age of 13, Austin native Kady Rain knew she wanted to sing. During her formative years, she channeled her creative energies into everything from music camp to her own high school band. But it wasn’t until her split with a local sludge metal band did she settle on her current pop direction.

It’s tough to be a musician in the Live Music Capital of the World. On any given night, world-class artists ply their trade for the contents of a tip jar. Award-winning singers hold down regular jobs. Venues that find pride in treating artists fairly close the doors in favor of no-cover bars with a makeshift stage in the corner.

Enter Black Fret. By building a community of industry folks and music lovers, with a heart of keeping Austin music alive and well, this nonprofit provides an answer to the issues plaguing the local music scene. And on the Dec. 7 Black Ball extravaganza at the Moody Theater, Black Fret awarded $250,000 to deserving musicians. It was an evening of giving, music, and all around good vibes. [Read more…]
