On August 10th, the sweet sound of music will drift north across Ladybird Lake as Threadgill’s and KLBJ FM help the Without Regrets Foundation throw their second annual benefit concert.
The Charity
Without Regrets was founded in Dripping Springs, Texas in June, 2011. Four months later in October, they officially gained their non-profit status. Co-founders Tara Ballard and Che Heinroth saw a need to help families with terminally ill parents to have one last moment of reprieve from the emotional and financial stresses that burden their lives. “This gives them something to look forward to other than doctor visits and treatment plans,” Tara told me during a phone interview.
She went on to explain that what makes Without Regrets unique from similar charities like Make-a-Wish Foundation is the focus. “We focus on the parents. Their doctor refers them to us, then we sit with them and discuss what type of experience they want to have.”
Though the parent is the focus, the entire family benefits. In order for the application to be accepted, the family must not have children over the age of 18, and the entire family must be able to participate. The family is given the opportunity to go on a trip or to an event within the United States with a maximum five night stay. The only other limitation is what the patient is medically permitted to do. Tara and Che want to help families, and being cognizant of medical restrictions is a major part of that.
“It’s about creating memories between the parent and the children – parents and children who do not have the luxury of time,” Tara continued. Naturally, these trips need funding and it’s understandable why some families are unable to fund these experiences on their own. Tara puts it simply: “They don’t think about vacation. They’re worried about how to pay the bills and how they will sustain themselves in the future.”
Donations are needed. Last year, Without Regrets teamed up with BDoe, KLBJ FM and Threadgill’s to throw a benefit concert. It worked and they’re doing it again next month.
The Concert
Threadgill’s is an Austin institution warranting its own story. But to keep it simple, their southern style cooking and drink menu will be available during the Without Regrets event. They’ll open their West Riverside outdoor venue to eventgoers at 8 PM. BDOE from KLBJ FM has stepped up to produce the event.
Last year, Without Regrets’ concert featured The Eric Tessmer Band, Soldier Thread and Vallejo. This year the lineup is just as strong with Slowtrain kicking things off at 9 PM, followed by The Damn Torpedoes and ending with East Cameron Folkcore. Ticket prices are $12.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door.
There is more to the event than just the music. Attendees have a chance to win two pairs of ACL Fest passes! This is how it works: When a person buys a t-shirt or other promotional item at the event, their name is put into a drawing. Along with the passes, several gift baskets will be given way. It’s a win-win. The concert goers get a great show and a chance at amazing prizes, and all proceeds go to Without Regrets and families in need.
This is a concert with heart. It’s important. Creating memories and being able to relax – even for a brief moment – is one of the greatest gifts a family with little time can receive. I hope to see you at Threadgill’s on August 10, 2013.
