Time to give September one last hurrah as we officially slip into October and Austin fall. With major festivals like ACL and Sound on Sound on the horizon, now is a good time to whet your appetite with awesome local music. This week we feature a pysch rock LP release party, an evening of Americana, and a masked duo that specializes in pounding, pulsing electronic music. Listen local, my friends!
Friday, Sept. 29
Otis the Destroyer album release show w/Slomo Drags, Honeyrude, Dr. Joe.
@ Hotel Vegas (1502 E. 6th St.) – 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The psychedelic hard rockers in Otis the Destroyer celebrate their first LP, “Keep Bashing,” this Friday at Hotel Vegas. More groove and guitar crunch than previous releases, the new record showcases the band’s impeccable sense of head trip rhythm and slamming good times. Some of the best Austin rock since Quiet Company hit the scene, Otis is a band on the rise. Also playing is pop rock Slomo Drags, spacey pysch rock Honeyrude, and the funky, ’70s party jam of Dr. Joe.
Harvest Thieves w/Paul Nipper
@ ABGB (1305 W. Oltorf St.) – 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.
This is the second time these pluckers and pickers have landed among my concert picks. Harvest Thieves continues to shine bright in the Austin music scene. Songs like “Bob Dylan’s 78th Hangover” showcase clever lyricism, while “Your Damn Vanity” and “I Killed Laura Palmer” highlight rootsy, Americana soul. Local honky tonk singer/songwriter Paul Nipper will be performing, as well.
Saturday, Sept. 30
Nght Hcklrs w/BLXPLTN, Michelleandthem
@ Swan Dive (615 Red River St.) – 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. – $5 at door
Prepare for an evening of dark, intense hip hop as the masked, vowel-allergic duo Nght Hcklrs invades Swan Dive. Using pounding drums and hypnotic synth as a bedrock for some of Austin’s finest MC’s, Nght Hcklrs makes the music David Lynch nightmares are born from. Also on the bill is dark ’80s synth-punk act BLXPLTN and thrash punk band Michelleandthem.
