Another week in the books, and Austin is brimming with amazing live music. Paring down the weekend to three picks was tough this week, but I’ve selected an eclectic mix of ATX artists for your listening enjoyment. As always, listen local!
Friday, March 31
Mike Flanigin Trio w/Jimmie Vaughn
@ C-Boy’s Heart & Soul (2008 S. Congress Ave.)
Watching Mike Flanigin bless the keys of a Hammond B-3 organ should be reason enough to leave your house. Seeing him team up with the illustrious Jimmie Vaughan and drummer Frosty Smith to play sultry, smooth Texas blues, and you have a night to remember. Flanigin is an old school ivory tickler who has collaborated with everyone from Gary Clark Jr. to Billy Gibbons, and his show will be jam-packed with authentic Austin blues.
Saturday, April 1
Sweet Spirit Record Release Show w/Absolutely Not and Fools
@ Barracuda (611 E. 7th St.)
Austin’s hottest supergroup celebrates the release of their new record, “St Mojo,” for two nights at Barracuda. The album’s lead-off single, “The Power,” struts with Mick Jagger swagger and a glam rock sheen, fueled by lead singer Sabrina Ellis’ theatrical, heart-shaking vocals. Required listening for fans of local music. Chicago-based speed rockers Absolutely Not and ATX pop-punk act Fools round out the bill.
Sunday, April 2
The Bluebonnets
@ Antone’s Record Shop (2928 Guadalupe St. #101) – 3 p.m.
A rollicking mix of devil-may-care glam rock and aggressive blues, The Bluebonnets peel the paint off walls with their high-energy live shows. If their 2014 album, “Play Loud,” is any indication, their new record, “Tonewrecker,” will be a towering inferno of body-shaking rhythm and earworm hooks. More than worth skipping afternoon tea for!
