The Austinot Weekend Concert Picks: June 14-15, 2019

Austinot Weekend Concert Picks June 14

Happy Father’s Day, dads and dudes! As a fellow member of the I-dad-so-hard community, I say Sunday should be a day of appreciation and reflection on all the hard work, sacrifices, and love you pour into your families. And yes, dadding can also be super fun.

But why does Dad Day have to be limited to Sunday? There’s great live music all weekend! This week, we recommend ROT Rally heavy metal and two record release parties guaranteed to please. Enjoy the weekend and listen local!

ROT Rally Show w/Death of a Dream, Lug, the Bvtcher, Southern Revival

@ Dirty Dog Bar (505 E. 6th) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event

One of the largest events of its type in the country, Republic of Texas Biker Rally (or ROT Rally as its commonly known) descends upon our fair city this weekend. A celebration of roaring engines and tough-as-nails bikes, this event draws fans of every type and stripe to the streets of downtown.

And there’s always an incredible show tied to the rally. While there will be a number of gigs scattered around town, Death of a Dream’s Friday show at Dirty Dog is my pick. A blistering metal band of intensity, songcraft, and chops for days, these Austin headbangers will provide the perfect soundtrack to your motorized festivities.

@ Mohawk Outdoor (912 Red River) – 9 p.m. – Tickets

If leather, motorcycles, and metal aren’t your thing, Kevin Russell and Shinyribs should be. Winner of the Austin Music Award for “Best Band” two years in a row, this local swamp-a-delic legend must be experienced once in your ATX life.

The new record, “Fog & Bling,” should be in the running for even more accolades come next year. From the boogie woogie funk of the opening number “Sing it Right” to the Gospel-tinged jam track “What’s A Man,” the album exemplifies Russell’s knack for groove covered with his singular humor and energy.

More Shinyribs is never a bad thing, so get your fill this weekend at Mohawk Outdoor.

Saturday, June 15

Carrie Fussell Calliope Musicals Austin

Calliope Musicals w/Magna Carda, Sir Woman, Rattlesnake Milk

@ Radio Coffee & Beer (4204 Manchaca) – 4 p.m. – Event page

Two amazing events packed into one day will make for an epic Saturday. First, you have the 5th anniversary party of venerated coffee shop/bar/venue Radio Coffee & Beer.

And at this celebration, an album release party will be in full swing. Calliope Musicals’ latest record, “Color/Sweat” drops this weekend. If you’ve never experienced this wonderful mix of pop hooks, surf energy, and every color of the rainbow, then this will be a fabulous opportunity to fall in love.

As for the album, I got a sneak listen to the record and it’s absolutely glorious. The title track is a controlled chaos scorcher buoyed by whirling synth lines and anchored by lead singer Carrie Fussell’s electric vocals.

Add to the mix the jumpy, boisterous “That’s Why We Dance” and the uplifting New Wave soar of “Golden Clouds,” and you have another wonderful entry in the Calliope Musicals discography. Expect an absolute extravaganza in one of Austin’s coolest settings.
