Can’t Decide What to Eat? There’s an App for That!

Posted on November 10, 2015 by Eliza Weeks

Tasty App Food Categories

It’s safe to say I’m a foodie. When I’m not trying a new restaurant, I’m drooling over online menus of restaurants I wish I could go to. We can’t have too much of a good thing, but at the rate new restaurants are opening in Austin, it’s challenging for this humble foodie to keep up!

Thankfully, an inspiring group of young engineers has created an app called Tasty. It puts my foodie problems to rest and has the potential to change the way we all experience dining in Austin.

New Way of Understanding Taste

As coworkers and housemates, Mokshika Sharma, Federico Galarraga and Dimitar Dimitrov spend a great deal of time together. They have two things in common: passion for food and interest in technology.

“We are all from cultures immersed in food,” notes Sharma. “I’m Indian, Fede is Spanish and Dimitar is Bulgarian.” Their culinary [Read more…]

Inside Look into Austin’s Blue Cat Cafe

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Kelli McDonald

Blue Cat Cafe Austin

Editor’s Note: Blue Cat Cafe closed on Feb. 5, 2019.

When I heard about the first cat cafe opening in Austin, I thought of all the blog posts I’d read about businesses in Japan where people could sit and relax with resident cafe cats. The accompanying pictures depicted cozy utopias for cat lovers, and I couldn’t wait to join in. With my next thought, worry crept into my mind. Cats are notoriously particular and many don’t want anything to do with other cats. Would our Austin business be run by people who would keep that idea, along with the importance of cleanliness, in mind? And what about litter boxes?! [Read more…]

Alamo Drafthouse’s Crispy Buffalo Cauliflower

Guest article by Colin Gray

Want to reduce or eliminate meat and animal products from your diet, but still love the junk food that makes Captain Planet sad?

Well, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is, um, not all vegan alternatives are made equal (one of the fake meats I tried is best described as “squidgy”). The good news is there are plenty of vegan junk food options in Austin that delete the guilt, but keep the pleasure.

Here is a list of my top five favorites.

Move Over, Blue Bell! NadaMoo Is Coming Through

Posted on August 20, 2015 by Jessica Pino

NadaMoo! Frozen Dessert scoops

When I found out I was allergic to dairy, I was devastated. No more lattes, no more caprese salads and–worst of all–no more ice cream.

Until I found NadaMoo! I don’t dare tell people it’s vegan ice cream because there is still a stigma that vegan = no flavor. But this organic, dairy-free, coconut based frozen dessert is far from that stereotype. It’s amazing! And best of all, it’s local to Austin.

I sat down with Daniel Nicholson of NadaMoo! to get the inside scoop (pun intended) and give you a look behind the coconut curtain. [Read more…]

Freshen Up with Snap Kitchen’s Summer Menu

Snap Kitchen Westlake

Snap Kitchen Westlake

I recently had the chance to sample Snap Kitchen’s summer menu, which will be available through September. During my first exposure to this healthy food shop, I was pleased by the neat lines and colorful aesthetic of the Westlake store I visited.

Snap Kitchen’s image and model seems to be serving them well. Although the first store opened in Austin in 2010, the company has managed to spread through [Read more…]

Tamales are a staple in many households during the holidays in Central Texas, but why let the calendar limit what time of year you can enjoy them? This article rounds up 5 Austin tamales spots that sell delicious bundles of comfort and joy year round.

Tamale House East: Tried and True

As the name informs, you’ll find this tamale favorite on Austin’s east side. The chicken tamale is delicious, but Tamale House East’s bean and cheese is the winner. [Read more…]

These 5 Austin Delivery Services Have You Covered

Posted on December 22, 2014 by Matthew Champion

When the cold nights of winter roll around, I tend to turn into a hermit by my fireplace and Christmas tree. But even at other times of the year, sometimes I’m too sick in bed to run out for a box of Kleenex, or I’m stuck at work finishing a project and can’t make time for lunch.

No matter what the scenario is, I don’t ever have to go without the things I want or need because of the plethora of quality Austin delivery services this great city has to offer.

Battle of the Brunches Round 6: Bouldin Creek Cafe

What’s brunch without crispy bacon, spicy sausage, or maybe some brisket hash?

If you’re at Bouldin Creek, you’ll find that brunch is exactly the way it should be.

Bouldin Creek Cafe has been providing Austin with uniquely delicious vegetarian options for 14 years now, most of which can also be made into vegan dishes. During its lifetime, the artistically inclined cafe has developed quite a brunch following made up of vegetarians and carnivores alike. [Read more…]

Move Over, Pumpkin Spice Latte! 6 Local Autumn Treats

Posted on September 11, 2014 by Guest Blogger

Guest article by Mia Moore

Like many others, as soon as the first autumn breeze hits, I go nuts for all things pumpkins spice. But I’ll be the first to admit that pumpkin is not the be-all, end-all of fall flavors. Apple, cinnamon, pecan, salted caramel, chai…there is so much more to choose from than your typical pumpkin spice latte.

This fall, why not challenge yourself to enjoy ALL the flavors of the season? Luckily, with Austin’s focus on keeping it local, many businesses offer seasonal treats for your delight. Here are a few of my personal favorite local Autumn treats.

Kerbey Lane Cafe – Pumpkin-Cinnamon Roll Pancakes

It’s no secret that Kerbey Lane Cafe has a weekly pancake flavor. But once Autumn hits, Kerbey begins serving pumpkin pancakes and sometimes even pumpkin-cinnamon roll pancakes. With a pumpkin flavored base and cinnamon sugar swirl, one taste of these pancakes may inspire [Read more…]

4 Brunch Spots You AND Your Vegan Friends Will Love

Posted on August 21, 2014 by Guest Blogger

Guest article by Mia Moore

Brunch (noun): The lazy Sunday morning afternoon tradition of breakfast lovers who never wake up in time for proper breakfast.

First and foremost, I am a foodie. I love indulging in the unique food culture Austin has to offer, and brunch is by far my favorite meal. I’m also a vegan. While there are tons of awesome, vegan-specific businesses, I’ve struggled to find brunch options that would appeal to both me and my omnivore friends. Something tells me that my omnivore friends probably don’t want noochy tofu scramble for breakfast any more than I want bacon.

Through vigorous, brunch-eating research, I’ve compiled my top Austin brunch picks that will please both vegans and omnivores. If a restaurant offers gluten-free options, I have done my best to include them here too.

The Steeping Room

The Steeping Room lives up to its name with an impressively extensive tea menu, but the real beauty is how seamlessly it caters to a variety of diets. The menu is labeled to make substitutions for vegan and gluten-free diets a breeze. [Read more…]
