Editor’s Note: As of August 2018, this business is under new ownership and no longer serves Cajun food.

East Austin has a rich cultural history. From segregation to assimilation, the area has been a deemed a “City within a City” at times, but continues to retain and add to the distinctly Austin vibe.

The area has come a long way since the 60’s, when it was infamous for crime and low standard of living. Amidst the infamy, a strong sense of community and culture thrived. The remnants are still visible, an integral part of what makes East Austin so special. Those who have persevered through the gentrification continue to preserve what was, and keep East Austin’s culture alive. [Read more…]

Pitchfork Pretty Kitchen Prep Work

Pitchfork Pretty has arrived on the east side restaurant scene, meeting all great expectations. Walking into the airy, cozy spot, I’m instantly taken with the natural light and comfortable setting. Jars of pickled vegetables near the front door catch my eye, and I have to stop a minute to take in the gorgeous surroundings. And then I try the food: sublime. [Read more…]

Walking into Native hostel is like entering another world. A world full of hip decor, fantastic beats, and a team of people who look “too cool for school,” but are actually down to earth and friendly.

Since its opening in May 2017, Native has quietly climbed the ranks among the coolest places in Austin to grab drinks, get a bite to eat, hang with friends, meet new pals, and people watch. [Read more…]

After all that brisk exercise, it’s time to head for a patio and enjoy a cold drink. Patio culture is Austin culture. Here are a few of my favorite patios for happy hour on the east side. In Austin, “locally-grown” means right inside the city limits. Possibly even in your neighborhood. Each year, East Austin Urban Farm Tour celebrates some of the wonderful working farms in the heart of East Austin. The event gives visitors the opportunity to tour four working farms, all within walking distance of each other. [Read more…]

It seems appropriate that Austin would have a museum of toys, mostly due to how serious we are about playfulness. When it comes to fostering a playful spirit as a way of life, Austin Toy Museum has it down!

Imagination and nostalgia line the walls of Austin Toy Museum, which has over 40,000 rotating items for display. While visitors certainly get a glimpse into past childhood joy, Austin Toy Museum serves the community in surprising ways. [Read more…]

Editor’s Note: As of June 8, 2017, Pitchfork Pretty is open for business. The owner also purchased an abandoned lot near the restaurant and has started a garden, from which the restaurant will source produce.

Over the past five years, the East Austin neighborhood of East Cesar Chavez has been developing at a rapid pace that shows no signs of slowing. Following the recent openings of highly anticipated restaurants such as Grizzelda’s, Tillery Kitchen and Bar, and Kemuri Tatsu-ya comes Pitchfork Pretty, scheduled to open in [Read more…]

The Sahara Lounge is like a funky spaceship full of old Austin magic. You can expect music and events almost every night of the week, and you’ll never be disappointed you didn’t spend your evening somewhere else.

In fact, The Sahara Lounge has got to be one of the most inviting places in the whole city and the Austinites who love it, really love it. Why, you ask? I’m happy to explain! [Read more…]

Cocktails, Bar Food and Brunch at Revelry Kitchen + Bar on East Sixth

Posted on January 18, 2017 by Jessica Pino

While the word revelry means “lively and noisy festivities, especially when these involve drinking a large amount of alcohol,” according to Oxford Dictionary, don’t let Revelry Kitchen + Bar fool you. Their food inspires just as much merriment as their cocktails. Even better, all the festivities won’t leave you broke.

One of the newest spots on East Sixth Street, Revelry strives to give revelers an affordable, boisterous and inviting choice among the many watering holes in the area. I went for Sunday brunch and stayed for the drinks. Every aspect of Revelry Kitchen + Bar is on point. Here’s all you need to know before heading there. [Read more…]

Old Thousand Introduces Bold Chinese Fusion to Austin’s East Side

When you enter Old Thousand’s dining room, you know you’re in store for something a little bit different. Bright, Asian-inspired floral wallpaper adorns the walls and a handmade 40-foot heritage oak bar spans one side of the room with a large gold Buddha on it. The space is comfortable and casual, but with a unique flair.

The atmosphere sets the tone, but the restaurant puts equal emphasis on eating in and dining out. So if you’re in the mood to enjoy the quiet atmosphere surrounding your own sofa, you can still enjoy delicious dishes from one of East Austin’s newest eateries. [Read more…]
