Hey, look at that! It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for another Austin music podcast! Today I am moving a bit out of my comfort zone by featuring some serious Mississippi blues. Today’s artist is Shelby Anderson. He recently moved to Austin from Mississippi, and he brought with him a unique blend of experimentalism and blues music.
Shelby’s love affair with music began years ago. He comes from a musical family. Growing up, he listened to one of his grandfathers play the saxophone and clarinet, and his other grandfather play the guitar and fiddle. These musical instruments would prove to have a catalytic effect on this young musician.
When Shelby found himself in high school, his infatuation with music sent him into the school band, where he learned the drums. He privately learned to play the guitar, piano and to sing, and soon a musician was created.
He then began playing with musicians across Mississippi, as he honed his talent and unique sound. At age 16, Shelby began gigging with Mississippi band Lorenzo and the Foxy Lady, a southern rhythm and blues band. Listen to his music. You’ll tell right away how Shelby’s time gigging in Mississippi has influenced his music. He has a gritty and soulful sound that is characteristic of the deep South.
Luckily for us here in Austin, Shelby decided to bring his music to the Live Music Capitol of the World. You can find him playing live shows across town, mainly acoustic sets as he gets settled. In addition to his own music, Shelby has helped other artists get their music out into the world. Shelby is a journeyman sound engineer and he produces, engineers and records music. Sometimes it’s his own music, but he is known to help other artists record demos as well. What a guy, eh?
You can contact Shelby through his Reverb Nation page. There you can listen to some more of his music and shoot him an email.
@DustyVegas asks:
What do you think of Shelby and his music?
