Welcome to your unofficial “how to” guide for getting the most out of SXSW Comedy 2017. The first thing you need to do is drop all expectations because, with comedy, ANYTHING can happen. Yes, there are scheduled events all week long. Yes, there are big names in comedy who will be performing. Yes, you may need a badge or wristband to attend some of the events. And yes, you can catch local comedians doing their thing, as well.
SXSW Comedy showcases officially kick off on March 10, 2017 at 8 p.m. and run until 2 a.m. on March 18, 2017. If you’re interested in catching some of the shows, I suggest you take a look at the lineup.
Now to answer a few questions you may have about how to maximize your SXSW Comedy experience.
How Can I Attend SXSW Comedy Events?
Since SXSW Comedy falls under SXSW Film this year, Film badge holders have access to the following events: Film Tracks, Keynotes, Featured Speakers, Mentor Sessions, Workshops, Round Tables, Convergence Tracks, Film Festival Screenings, Events and Parties, Film Festival Exclusive Premieres, Comedy Festival Showcases, Trade Shows and Exhibitions and Networking Meet Ups.
But the GREATEST info I can bestow on you is that all badges, plus Film and Music Wristbands are welcome at all SXSW Comedy 2017 events. HOORAY for comedy fans! Basically, they will let people in as long as there’s space.
What if you don’t have a badge or wristband? Check the web for unofficial events, which tend to be free with an RSVP.
Where Should I Go?
The venues chosen for SXSW Comedy this year include Austin institutions like ACL Live at The Moody Theater, The Hideout, Esther’s Follies, Stateside at the Paramount, Old School Bar & Grill and Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. If you’re into podcasts, check the lineup for live recordings of “Doug Loves Movies,” “Hannibal Burress: Handsome Rambler,” and the beloved “Comedy Bang! Bang!”
Another nugget of advice I want to share is to follow the SXSW Twitter account, as well as any comedian you’d like to check out. Sometimes, there are pop-up surprise shows!
Will I Be Able to See Local Austin Comedians?
It’s pretty darn exciting that comedy powerhouses like Upright Citizens Brigade, Comedy Central, Earwolf and Above Average descend upon our beautiful city during SXSW. But we have to remember that all of the successful comedians working today started somewhere, right? Between Bob Odenkirk and Chris Hardwick sets, check out a local standup or improv show! I recommend ColdTowne, The Institution Theater, Cap City Comedy Club and The New Movement.
What Do I Need to Bring?
A sense of humor and cash for tacos.
