Know Before You Go: Navigating Central Texas Celebrations
Most Juneteenth events in Austin are clustered in East Austin and the downtown core. If you’re driving in from Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, or Buda, you’re looking at a 20- to 30-minute drive under normal conditions.
On June 19, expect heavier traffic near East Austin event zones.
Getting to the Rosewood Park Parade & Festival
This is the biggest logistical challenge of the day. Street closures along East MLK Jr. Boulevard and surrounding neighborhoods run from 5 am to 10 pm on June 19. Standard street parking near Rosewood Park will be heavily restricted.
- CapMetro bus routes drop off along Chicon Street and 7th Street, both within walking distance of the festival. Download the CapMetro app to plan your trip and buy passes. Note that day passes are no longer sold at bus fareboxes as of June 1, 2026.
- Rideshare is your best bet if you don’t want to deal with parking at all. Set your drop-off pin near the festival entrance on Rosewood Ave.
- If you’re driving, use I-35 for north/south travel and Manor Road or E. 11th Street for east/west. Paid parking lots downtown are the closest reliable option.
Beat the Heat
June in Austin means mid-to-upper 90s. Outdoor events like the Rosewood Park festival, the Bastrop Freedom Parade, and the Round Rock festival will be hot, especially midday.
- Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat. Some events offer free water stations, but fill up your water bottle beforehand just in case.
- If you’re attending with kids, plan your schedule around the cooler parts of the day. The Rosewood parade starts at 10 am before peak heat, and the Round Rock festival doesn’t kick off until 4 pm.
- The Wells Branch MUD concert (6–8 pm, covered courtyard with indoor backup) and Travis County celebration (11 am–2 pm, under a parking garage) are both shaded, solid picks if you want to avoid the sun entirely.
Round Rock Parking
The Round Rock Juneteenth Festival at Old Settlers Park charges $10 cash-only parking. Bring cash as there’s no card option. Proceeds fund next year’s event.
Plan Ahead for the Carver Museum & Book Festival
The Carver Museum events (Remembrance Ceremony on June 19, Kickback on June 20, and Book Festival on June 27) are all free, but indoor spaces have capacity limits.
RSVP through the Carver Museum event page to make sure you get in, especially for the Book Festival featuring Chuck D, which draws 500+ attendees.
Neill-Cochran House Museum
The free BBQ lunch from chef Damien Brockway is served while supplies last. If you want to eat, arrive close to the noon start. Tours of the slave quarters run throughout the afternoon.
