Editor’s Note: The restaurant closed in April 2017. Lola, whose real name is Lozina, plans to relocate the restaurant to Taylor, Texas.

Twelve years ago, Lola Stephens-Bell opened Nubian Queen Lola’s Cajun Soul Food Café at Rosewood and Chicon. I visited during lunchtime on a Friday and watched as the family-style seating filled up.

Lola’s husband and a volunteer named Ellie helped to take care of the growing crowd while I spoke with Lola about her life and her mission to feed the hungry in Austin. [Read more…]

Clara Bensen and Jeff Wilson on International Trip with No Baggage

Austinites Clara Bensen and Jeff Wilson have taken five trips without baggage. Bensen says it keeps getting easier (as long as the climate is consistent).

A book deal was far from Clara Bensen’s mind when she embarked on a three-week journey through Europe, alongside a recent OkCupid date, with no luggage. For some, this form of travel might sound too anxiety-ridden. But for Bensen, it was a personal experiment in celebrating the possibilities of life and love. [Read more…]

Women's Storybook Project Volunteer to Record a Reading

Women’s Storybook Project volunteer with a mother who is ready to create a recording

With the help of 200 volunteers and thousands of books, Women’s Storybook Project of Texas connects incarcerated mothers with their children through reading.

Donated books are given to mothers to read aloud. Volunteers record their voices and then deliver the book and tape to the children. This helps bond families dealing with incarceration, and promotes an interest in books and using the imagination.

Though this process may seem straightforward, the reality is far more complicated. I met with the President of Women’s Storybook Project of Texas, Judith Dullnig, to gain insight into how she has grown this generous organization over the past 11 years. [Read more…]
