Top 5 Ways to Give Back For Thanksgiving 2021 in Austin

Posted on November 22, 2021 by Bill Tucker

More than the preamble to the holiday crazy, Thanksgiving is a perfect time to slow down, share a meal, and reflect. It’s also a great time to give back to our community. With our hearts and thoughts pointed to those less fortunate, here’s 5 great ways to give back in Austin this Thanksgiving 2021.

Ways To Give Back For Thanksgiving in Austin

31st Annual Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot

One of Austin’s longest running Thanksgiving Day traditions, this year’s Turkey Trot is a celebration of activity and charity. With all proceeds going to Caritas of Austin, a non profit that works to prevent and end homelessness, this five mile run is more than preparing for a monster meal. And if you’re still not comfortable running with a large crowd, you can always participate in a virtual run via a special tracking app. A fantastic event for an important cause.

For information on the in person race, the virtual race, and fees, visit www.thundercloud.com/event-info.

Operation Turkey

Like many people, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner was the jump off point for the holiday season. For many in our community, they aren’t so lucky. Operation Turkey aims to change that by providing free Thanksgiving meals for needy families in cities all over the country. This week, you can still participate in the turkey Tailgate at Rodeo Austin to help smoke 600 turkeys and again on Thanskgiving Day to help distribute meals to those in need. A great way to help keep Austin fed.

Operation Blue Santa

While it may be too soon for holiday shopping, it’s never too soon to begin giving to Operation Blue Santa. An arm of the Austin Police Department, this charitable effort provides toys and food to Austin families in need. Drop boxes are already popping up all over town, so now’s the perfect time to donate goods or sign up to volunteer.

For information on volunteering and donating, please visit https://www.bluesanta.org/

Central Texas Food Bank

Any time of year is a great time to donate to the Central Texas Food Bank, but late November / early December is critical. The holidays can be a challenging financial time for many families, so the more we can raise, the better. CTFB’s website has dozens of ways you can chip in to the cause. From fundraising opportunities to volunteering, this longstanding organization is always in need of people and resources. Why not make Thanksgiving week the jump off point for your seasonal giving.

Coats for Kids

Remember Snowpocalypse 2021? This year is projecting to be another cold one, so it’s important to have quality winter wear. Coats for Kids provides an invaluable service that this year’s weather emergency proved important, even in Central Texas. The Junior League of Austin is currently collecting gently used coats for their December 4th distribution event. Just swing by any Jack Brown Cleaners and donate today!

ACL Festival 2021 Week One – In Pictures

Posted on October 4, 2021 by Bill Tucker

ACL Fest 2021

ACL 2021 kicked off this past weekend and the fans were treated to some amazing music & of course fun partying! Check out Week One in Pictures.

A wild weekend of sun, sounds, and sensational music, ACL Festival started with some weather and finished off with the sort of scorching day that one expects from the festival. The crowds were vast and stages packed but even in the midst of all the crazy, it wasn’t hard to find friends and families having a ball surrounded by music and madness. Here are some shots of the weekend that was.

ACL Festival Week One 2021 – Day One Pictures

Overnight rains and a muddy field caused ACL Fest 2021 to be delayed until 3:00. For much of the day, the clouds battled the sun for airspace, but the end result was a pleasant days of fun and music. While none of our early morning Austin artists were able to perform (gutted for Primo the Alien, Darkbird, Audic Empire, and Nane), we did get treated to a stunning set by The Black Pumas.

.

Day Two Pictures

Another day clouds and concern, the rain held out and attendees were treated to another great day of music. Saturday was the busiest of the weekend with massive crowds jamming small and large stages alike. Local music was represented by the amazing Sir Woman, the powerhouse rock of Missio, a steamy Latin set by Gina Chavez, and a monster performance by local phenom DayGlow. Oh, and UT won to the delight of a sizable crowd. Never a bad thing!

ACL Festival 2021 Week One – Day Three Pictures

With no rain fears in sight, the threat of rain drops gave way to a day of brutal, sweaty sunshine. This is par for the course at ACL, but the heat made me wish for a sprinkle or two of rain. Regardless, the final day of Weekend Three was a tidal wave of great music, especially from our local heroes, Shooks, Deezie Brown, and TC Superstar. The rest of my day was spent roaming the park, soaking in music from dozens of different artists.

That’s the fun of ACL for me. Sampling music like a buffet and meeting like-minded people looking to have a good time. Yes, there are drawbacks a-plenty, but I’m choosing to focus on the positive aspect of a fun-filled weekend packed with music, local talent, and one-of-a-kind excitement. And while I’m not sure my 40 year old body could take Weekend Two, I’d sure as heck give it a go! To those embarking on that musical journey, have a blast!

Austin Artists At ACL Fest 2021 – The Ultimate Guide

Posted on September 28, 2021 by Bill Tucker

Agree or disagree, as of this article, ACL Fest 2021 is on and ready to rock. As always, this world class event features some of finest artists from Austin. While most of the lesser known names require early arrival, seeing a local artist play on a massive festival stage is a sight to behold. Here’s your ultimate guide to our local heroes playing one of the biggest festivals of the year.

As always, I’ve created a Spotify playlist with music from all of this year’s ATX artists. Click here to give it a listen.

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Friday, October 1st

Asleep At The Wheel

The day Asleep at the Wheel fails to open ACL Festival with their signature brand of dancehall country, Austin will die a little bit. If you haven’t seen Austin Artist Ray Benson’s band of down home musicians live and in person, you are missing out on a crucial piece of local music history. Get in early and dig an Austin legend.

1:00 -1:45 on the Honda Stage

Audic Empire

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Audic Empire (@audicempire)

A resplendent expression of sun-soaked positive vibes, Audic Empire’s been blessing stages for well over a decade. Their latest single, “Let the Sun In”, laces it’s Saturday afternoon reggae upbeat with guest verses/vocals by Baby Bash and Keara Alyse while the message of “Come and Toke It” is – well – self explanatory. While you’re not permitted to bring in the sort of substances that pair well with Audic Empire’s sound, you’ll be tempted.

1:00 – 1:45 on the Tito’s Stage

Primo The Alien

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by PRIMO THE ALIEN (@primoalien)

More than a throwback to the days of The Human League and New Order, Primo The Alien takes well worn sounds and weaves them into music fresh, exciting, and new. Her biggest hit, “My Delorean”, is an electro-wave jam soaked in 80’s synth and propelled by Primo’s palpable desire to start over while her latest single, “Do It Again”, is a dramatic relationship post-mortem soaked with electronic percussion, cosmic synth, and urgent, emotional vocals. A talented songwriter who uses synthwave as a medium as opposed to a nostalgia trick, Primo The Alien transcends a genre full of strobe-light pretenders.

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Saturday, October 2nd

Sir Woman

Once considered Kelsey Wilson’s Wild Child side project, Sir Woman’s become a musical force of its very own. Her latest single, “Party City”, is a bouncy 70’s soul bop celebrating the forward momentum and easy-does-it joy of spending time with someone you love. Listening to Ms. Wilson’s effortless vocal curl around a funky bass line and biting horn pops is pure musical candy.

1:00 – 1:45 on the Tito’s Stage

Gina Chavez

The last time Gina performed at ACL Fest, she performed on the Tito’s stage in the early afternoon. This year, she has an early evening spot on the 3rd largest stage in the park. It’s been fun watching her rise from a local Latin songstress to Tiny Desk concerts and headlining gigs around the globe. Her latest single, “Juntos Together”, stiches sparse shakers, Mexican accordion, and various Latin percussion into a bouncy jam worthy of steamy dancehall evenings. A must listen set on one of Austin’s biggest stages.

5:20 – 6:20 on the BMI Stage

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Sunday, October 3rd

Deezie Brown

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DEEZIE BROWN (@deeziebrown)

One of the torchbearers of the new ATX hip-hop movement, Deezie Brown’s tight flow and head knocking production keeps the flame alight. His latest collaboration EP, “Geto Gala (Chopped and Slowed)”, is a collection of slow burn, chill anthems featuring the talents of Mr. Brown, Jake Lloyd, and the titular Geto Gala. The drowsy “Sum’n to Say” is an album highlight, but pray Brown performs “I Want It All” during his early afternoon ACL Fest set. Sure to wake the crowd up and enable hype mode for the day’s events.

12:15 – 1:00 on the Miller Lite Stage

Shooks

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Shooks (@shookstheband)

If hip hop’s not your thing, swing to the VRBO stage for the indie rock sway and strut of Shooks. Combining indie rock sensibilities with a post punk twang, Shooks generates earwork hooks glazed with a subtle psychedelic haze. “You Know I’m Right” features a straight-forward guitar rift that allows lead vocalist Marlon Sexton (yes, that Sexton) to inject emotion galore through his wandering, evocative tenor. And hell yeah, they’re catchy as all get out. Check them out either at ACL Fest or any other means necessary.

12:15 – 1:00 on the VRBO Stage

TC Superstar

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by TC Superstar (@tc_superstar)

With love and respect to all the local artists preforming this year, TC Superstar convinced me to cover Weekend One. A group full of depth, fun, self awareness, and pure joy, TC is my happy candy. From early dance gems like “Denial” and “Toyota Corolla” to their lush and poignant “R&D” LP, TC Superstar is proving they’re more than a quirky hook. And their latest record, “As Seen on TV”, is a triumph of smile inspiring jams with “Waste My Time” becoming my early favorite. A binge worthy act worthy of arriving early to see.

2:15 – 3:00 on the Tito’s Stage

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Friday, October 8th

Riders Against the Storm

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Riders Against the Storm (RAS) (@rashiphop)

Musicians, MC’s, activists, and defenders of social causes from Black Lives Matter to local artists rights, Riders Against the Storm isn’t a simple hip hop group. They are a cultural movement. For decades, Chaka and Qi Dada have used their talents to not only create landmark records but push Austin’s social conversation forward with a heart for peace, unity, and love. The title track off their latest record, “Flowers for the Living”, is a buoyant and uplifting call for joy in a world at a loss for it. Required viewing / listening.

1:30 – 2:15 on the Tito’s Stage

The Teeta

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Teeta (@theteeta)

Evocative and brutally honest in both lyrics and flow, The Teeta is an A tier Austin MC. With tracks like the slow burn “come up” anthems “Summersaults” and “Get Yourz” to the slick wordplay of “Forex”, this ATX wordsmith layers droning trap beats with tights lyrics that feel raw and real. It’ll be cool watching The Teeta practice his craft on the BMI stage.

3:15 – 4:00 on the BMI Stage

Hinds

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by HINDS (@hindsband)

Balancing chill vibes with catchy, genre bending pop hooks, Hinds is a band worth paying close to attention to. “Good Bad Times” is a multilingual bop that evokes spending time with loved ones on cool spring afternoons while “San Diego” is a delightfully messy romp. The DIY spirit is strong with this four and the result is intoxicating.

3:15 – 4:00 on the VRBO Stage

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Saturday, October 9th

Mike Melinoe

I’ve been speaking a good deal of sugar about Mike Melinoe over the last year and it’s for good reason. An impressive MC of talent, swag, and style, Melinoe pumps out bangers with startling efficiency. “Telsa” is still one of my favorite tracks from last year, 2020’s “Costco” is a rapid fire scorcher, and his latest single, “Lost Prophets”, bumps with a retro mid-90’s beat, providing a silky landing spot for Melinoe’s signature flow. Get there early, get blown away.

12:05 – 12:50 on the VRBO Stage

The Tender Things

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Tender Things (@thetenderthings)

Need some country in your life? Grab lunch, mosey over to the nearby Tito’s stage, and get your dance on to The Tender Things. “Sister Elizabeth” is a boot scooting boogie of the highest order while “How You Make a Fool”, off the 2020 record of the same name, injects a touch of Southern blues to a cautionary tale of how not to approach life and its many choices. Cool, smoothed out country in a classic vein.

1:00 – 1:45 on the Tito’s Stage

Dayglow

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Dayglow (Sloan Struble) (@dayglowband)

Last year, Sloan Christian Struble, also known as Dayglow, was a bubbling-under-the-radar pop producer looking for a hit. Today, he’s an ATX darling on the level of the Black Pumas and Gary Clark Jr. And it’s for good reason. His skyrocketing single, “Can I Call You Tonight”, shimmers with a infectious indie groove while “Hot Rod” evokes the motions of long drives to destinations unknown via a cerebral, tongue-in-cheek smile. His latest single, “Close to You” off this year’s “Harmony House”, uses sparkling synth and an upbeat 80’s beat to tell a story of smiling through longing and regret. Love Dayglow and I’m confident you will too.

7:20 – 8:20 on the VRBO Stage

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Sunday, October 10th

Zach Person

Ashamed to admit, I didn’t quite get Zach Person until I saw him live. During an early summer Black Fret event at The Long Center, Person torched the stage with a stomping brand of rock-a-blues that made me a believer. “Can’t Stop Running” immediately sparks comparisons to Gary Clark Jr while his new single, “Remnants” is a daring six minute opera that begins as a smoldering ember and grows into a 5 alarm fire of guitar wizardry and pure soul. Join me in the church of Person in a few weeks at the BMI Stage.

12:00 – 12:45 on the BMI Stage

BLK ODYSSEY

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by @blkodyssy

Butter smooth R&B MC with a decidedly modern edge, BLK ODYSSY will bring a touch of swag to the early Sunday lineup. “HANG LOW” burns with sultry vibes like a D’Angelo tune while “BIG BAD WOLF/SOBER” turns toward the serious in a tale of addiction and poor choices in the vein of Kendrick Lamar. A complex yet highly entertaining artist worth arriving early for.

12:00 – 12:45 on the VRBO Stage

Superfonicos

Another artist I’ve written many complimentary words about, Superfonicos continues their rise to ATX Latin elite. Their latest single, “El Adios”, is a scorching samba number while “Cumbealo” screams heat, passion, and positive energy in a quick step cumbia. Call me crazy, but if this sensational group isn’t playing ACL Live alongside Grupo Fantasma within a few years, I’ll be sorely disappointed. Run, don’t walk, to the BMI stage for this mid afternoon treat.

3:30 – 4:30 on the BMI Stage

David Ramirez

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by David Ramirez (@davidramirez)

An artist of range and depth, David Ramirez is one our local luminaries and for good reason. Propelled by the sensitive and touching folk/country hit “Harder to Lie”, 2015’s “Fable” hit national recognition. Since then, from headlining appearances at major festivals to Austin Music Awards, Ramirez is cementing his reputation as an ATX staple. His latest single, “Normal” is anything but. A personal and biting testimonial track that begs repeated listens, the song might his best work in years. More than enough to catch his Sunday ACL Fest set.

5:30 – 6:30 on the BMI Stage

Austin Artists at ACL 2021 – Both Weekends

Black Pumas

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Black Pumas (@blackpumas)

It’s not a stretch to call The Black Pumas the biggest ATX success story of the last five years. Maybe ten. For all of Gary Clark Jr’s success, nobody’s experienced the meteoric rise to prominence like this Eric Burton / Adrian Quesada collaboration. Their latest single, “Wichita Lineman”, continues their trend of finely crafted blues/rock. If you’re one of the millions who dug their self titled debut, you’ll need to be in attendance to experience Black Pumas live and in person.

6:00 – 7:00 Friday on the Lady Bird Stage (both weekends)

Missio

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MISSIO (@missiomusic)

The audio equivalent to an erupting volcano, Missio’s thundering electronic sound projects power and emotion in equal measure. While my adoration of their debut record “Loner” is well documented, they’ve done nothing but keep the quality high since 2017. Their latest EP, “Skeletons: Part 3 (Instrumentals)”, is a fantastic companion piece to 2020’s stellar “Can You Feel the Sun”. Come for the soaring title track, stay for the beautifully discordant “Wolves”. Loved Missio when I saw them at SXSW a few years back, love them even more four years later.

5:20 – 6:20 Saturday on the VRBO Stage (both weekends)

Nane

Daniel Sahad of Nane performs during a 2021 Black Fret showcase. (credit: Bill Tucker)

This is going to be a-mazing. I’ve been lucky enough to experience Nane in small venues and this Latin/funk/soul fusion band lifts souls to the rafters. Seeing them on ACL’s biggest stage will be a mind bending experience. From newly minted classics like the rollicking party jam “Blue Velvet” and the sultry “Always On My Mind” to their most recent single, “Seventeen”, these ATX rock-a-funkers are legends in the making.

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2021: The Ultimate ACL Guide By a Local

Posted on September 11, 2021 by Bill Tucker

For almost twenty years, the Austin City Limits Music Festival has served as a cornerstone of our yearly concert calendar. A sprawling two weekend event during early October, some of the best national and local acts in the world make Austin their temporary home. This year, in spite of the ongoing pandemic, the show will go on in Zilker Park. How do you do ACL Fest 2021 like a local? Read on to find out!

Austin City Limits Music Festival – Staying Safe, Staying Healthy.

When Lizzo says, “turn on your cell phones”, 40,000 people say, “OK”. (credit: Bill Tucker)

Let’s start with the most important – staying safe and COVID free. Like every major festival, ACL Fest 2021 implemented a series of COVID-19 guidelines all attendees must adhere to:

  • You must provide a printed copy of your proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR a printed negative COVID-19 test performed within 72 hours of the event. Note the emphasis on PRINTED. Don’t show up with a PDF of your certificate on your phone and expect entry.
  • Read, understand, and comply with the ACL Festival Fan Health Pledge found here. It includes basic stuff like don’t come in with a fever, COVID-19 symptoms, and quarantine if you’ve been to a foreign country within 14 days of the event. Standard pandemic stuff!

As for masks and face coverings, as of this article, there’s no official mandate in place, but I suspect there will be something come October. But even if there are no outdoor rules, bring a face covering. Why? Dust!

ACL veterans will remember the dust bowl years of 2005 and 2008 where thanks to searing heat, high winds, and 80,000 people trampling the grass into dirt, dust was a serious problem. You’ll still see stage crew and ACL staff wearing some sort of face covering, pandemic or no pandemic. Just a good idea!

Oh, and HYDRATE! Every year, I see at least one person sent to the medical area due to dehydration. Beer and wine are not suitable replacements for water, especially when there are hydration stations everywhere. Bring an empty bottle and fill up often.

Pack Light. Extra Light

Jumping from the ACL Fest picture frame is a yearly tradition (credit: John Cabuena/Flipintex Fotos).

If you’ve been to a Longhorn game or any ATX sporting event recently, you know the drill. Clear bags the size of small purses and opaque bags the size of fanny packs are allowed in. No backpacks, nothing with extra pockets. Water vessels are allowed but they need to be completely empty before walking in for obvious reasons. The days of sneaking adult beverages into Zilker Park are pretty much over.

Other no-no’s include umbrellas, anything that makes shade, pro camera gear, and aerosol containers. And yes, the gate staff checks everything.

But what can you bring? Strollers, frisbees, chairs, blankets, tube sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and ear plugs. All of which I highly recommend for a comfortable festival experience. Except for the frisbee. That’s optional.

I also recommend going cashless for all your food, drink, souvenirs, etc. While a credit card won’t take up much room, syncing your card to your wristband gives you instant access to everything you need to buy. And they work surprisingly well so a physical card isn’t needed.

What to Wear to Austin City Limits Music Festival 2021?

As the day went on, the sun peeked out over ACL Fest 2019 (credit: John Cabuena/Flipintex Fotos).

While ACL Style is a popular Instagram hashtag, doing so at the expense of heatstroke or a sprained ankle isn’t worth it. Cool, breezy, and comfortable should be the order of the day. Avoid sandals or anything open toed (those crowds can get packed with foot stompers).

And don’t forget to bring rain protection just in case the skies open up ala 2009 or the day cancelling deluge of 2013. UPDATE: The weather for weekend one is looking to be non-stop damp. Zilker Park is primed to be a mud pit, so be sure to bring waterproof shoes. Leave the flip flops at home!

How to Get to ACL?

The ACL entrance welcomes and says so long to everyone lucky enough to be in attendance (credit: John Cabuena/Flipintex Fotos)

First off, forget about parking at Zilker. There’s none to be had. Your best bet to either take a CapMetro bus, ride share, or simply walk. Two years ago, I parked in the South Congress area and took a leisurely Lime scooter to the entrance. There are closer places to park, but you start getting into insane prices.

There’s also the excellent ACL shuttle picking up and dropping off at Republic Square Park. The buses pick up at 5th and San Antonio and drop off at the Barton Springs West entrance. This is my preferred way of getting to the event. Yes, parking will be pricey downtown, but it’s better than going with private lots, some of which can run hundreds of dollars.

And of the three ways in, the Lady Bird entrance is generally the quickest. You’ll miss out on that selfie with the iconic ACL Festival sign, but you should get in faster.

Attending ACL Like a Pro

Robert Smith of The Cure at ACL Fest 2019 (credit: John Cabuena/Flipintex Fotos).

Gates open an hour before the first act, usually to the blare of the opening music of Star Wars. For Friday, that means gates at noon for the 1:00 performances, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 AM for noon shows. Getting there early, if you can, is highly encouraged. There are three attack plans for checking out the music.

Streak to the Main Stage – If you’re there to check out a headlining artist, it behooves you to get there when the gates open and scream toward one of the two main stages. Prepare to sit there for 12 hours, so going with a group is highly recommended for place holding, food grabbing, beer runs, etc. And the area becomes a no chair zone around 4:00, so prepare to be on the ground.

Camp Out Strategically – If I were to go with friends or family, this is what I would do. Review the schedule, find a spot between a couple of stages with artists you dig and stay put. Performances are staggered at ACL Fest, so find the right spot, and you’ll have non-stop music while you chill in relative comfort.

Wander Like a Nomad – This is me. I’m all about wandering the grounds picking up samples and tastes of music as I go. The thrill of discovery is what I love about big music events and staying in motion helps me stay connected to what’s new and interesting. Plus I rack up some serious steps on the old smart watch.

Other Important Tidbits About Austin City Limits Fest

Gary Clark Jr performing on the AMEX stage at ACL Fest 2019 (credit: John Cabuena/Flipintex Fotos)

Austin City Limits – Cancelled: For those who want to bring the little ones, I have bad news. Austin Kiddie Limits will not be a thing this year. Children 10 or younger are still allowed in, but there won’t be an entire section dedicated to their good times.

Eat Well at ACL: ACL Fest offers a surprising amount of food and drink, most of it hyperlocal. Take the opportunity to try a spot you’ve never been to before and always try to dine during off times. My goal is breakfast at 9:30 before I get there, late yet light lunch around 1:30 and then a 5:00 fuel up before the evening’s madness begins. Less time in lines equals more time in the music.

HAVE FUN: Yes, the pandemic is making this year’s event contentious and for some, downright scary. I have two kids and I’m immunocompromised. Despite my vaccination, getting a variant would be a serious situation for me. My goal? Be as responsible as humanly possible, mask up from the chin up, and make my experience worth the risk. So, have fun! Listen to some new music, experience the thrill of discovery, and maybe even meet some new people.

Top 10 Live Music Venues in Austin

Posted on August 30, 2021 by Bill Tucker

While the world’s still wrestling with the realities of COVID-19, our music community is still a great place to experience live music in Austin. Whether it’s classic joints or new, hip locations, music is best enjoyed with a crowd of people. Here’s ten of our favorites.

NOTE: In light of the ongoing pandemic, it’s important to note not every venue has a firm mask policy in place. Restrictions can change show to show at the behest of the artist, so be sure to call ahead before attending any performance and PLEASE stay safe.

Best Live Music Places in Austin, Texas

1/ Mohawk

Megafauna Black Fret

My favorite Red River club never disappoints. With a unique multi-tiered amphitheater outside and a more intimate stage inside, Mohawk is great for multiple band showcases. It also has solid cocktails and great craft beer, a rarity in many rock clubs. And their lineup is a wonderful mix of local favorites and national acts. A must visit venue.
Located: 912 Red River, Austin, Texas

2/ The Parish

From the layout to the sound to the location, The Parish always manages to impress, especially during busy events like SXSW. Striking a delicate balance of intimate and roomy, there’s ample space to navigate, grab a drink at the bar, and check out some live music.

And while its location smack dab in the middle of Sixth Street may be a turn-off for some, I’d still recommend braving the crazy to check out some exceptional shows.
Located: 214 E. 6th Street Austin, TX 78701

3/ Empire Control Room & Garage

Taylor Muse Playing Empire Control Room

Another multi-stage live music venue in Austin, Empire Control Room & Garage’s sweet location and exceptional selection of artists make it a fine place to visit for the evening, and get barraged by awesome music. This is where I was first introduced to Quiet Company and CAPYAC, among others, so it holds a special place in my heart. Even the relatively tiny Control Room puts on great shows with high-quality sound. Highly recommended.
Located: 606 E. 7th Street Austin, TX 78701

4/ Continental Club

Old school Austin is rapidly deteriorating in the face of urban sprawl and gentrification. The small yet sensational Continental club is one of our enduring musical landmarks. More than a time machine to the days of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Joe Ely, The Continental Club’s intimate layout brings the music close to the listener, providing an experience like none other.
Located: 1315 South Congress Avenue – Austin, Texas

A lovely blend of dive bar snarl with an elegant smirk, Swan Dive produces great shows with a laid back vibe. During SXSW, this is one of my go-to’s to discover new acts and dig exciting music. Add to the mix a spacious backyard second stage and there’s no reason to avoid this Red River mainstay.

Best Live Music Places in Austin – Continued

6/ Hotel Vegas

Never mind the punk rock aesthetic, the eclectic schedule, or the incredible sound. Hotel Vegas just feels like an Austin venue. One of the spots I’d sob over if it ever went under, Hotel Vegas is another “must visit” if you need to check out an East Austin show. TC Superstar at Hotel Vegas during SXSW 2019 was a highlight of my festival experience that year and it wouldn’t have been the same at any other venue.
Located: 1502 E. 6th Street Austin, TX 78702

7/ Cheer Up Charlies

Another perennial live music favorite in Austin, Cheer Up Charlies has a heart for local talent. From midnight performance by Moving Panoramas to Mobley’s label signing celebration, Cheer Up lifts up ATX artists in a major way. Just last week, Mamaduke, Melat, Felt Out, Van Mary, and CAPYAC graced their stages. Proof enough Cheer Up Charlies loves locals!
Located: 900 Red River St. Austin, TX 78701

8/ Broken Spoke

The Broken Spoke Austin Dancehall

Call me basic all you like, The Broken Spoke kinda rules. One of the few legit dance halls left in our fair town, The Spoke may feel like a tourist trap, but spend an evening dancing with the regulars, and your tune will change. At the center of the documentaries, the museum, and the chicken fried steak, are kind hearted people who love the art and connection of a good two-step. And if I didn’t convince you, check out The White Horse.
Located: 3201 S. Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas 78704

9/ Antone’s

Now in it’s 6th iteration, the modern day Antone’s carries the legacy of its former locations with an awesome blend of blues club cool and ATX weird. Surprising for what’s essentially a rectangular room, the acoustics are astounding. And while most of the shows are ticketed, it’s worth popping in after work to check out their amazing house band. Legend for a reason!
Located: 305 E 5th Street Austin, TX 78701

10/ ACL Live at The Moody Theater

Another live music Austin pick that feels like cheating. Checking out an ACL Live taping is an experience and much of that vibe is thanks to the venue. The acoustics are unrivaled, every seat is a good one, and the artists are first rate. It’s considered an honor to play the Moody and the fact we have an iconic venue on our backyard is something to be respected and appreciated.

10 Best BBQ Places in Austin – Top Barbeque Restaurants

Posted on July 23, 2021 by Bill Tucker

Looking for the best bbq in Austin? We have you covered!

BBQ holds a sacred place in the pantheon of Austin food-stuffs. As the crowning point in the Texas Trinity (Tex-Mex, breakfast tacos, BBQ), smoked meat goes beyond foodie culture. It’s integral to the fabric of what makes Austin “Austin.”

So where to go! As a semi-experienced member of the BBQ-loving community, I’ve tried my fair share of local favorites and selected ten of my favorite spots for smoked deliciousness.

Classic Game Fest: More Than a Trip Down Memory Lane

When COVID-19 hit in March of 2020, it devoured events like a termite chews through wood. The rash of cancellations made sense given the seriousness of the pandemic, but it still stung thousands of organizers, venue owners, and attendees. Classic Game Fest, a yearly celebration of all things retro videogames, was one of the casualties.

Now with the pandemic slowed and restrictions lifted, Classic Game Fest is on with no limitations to the fun. Bigger than ever before in both size and scope, this love letter to the games of old offers something for everybody. Whether you’re an NES junkie or an Atari nerd, there’s something for everyone this year.

Black Fret Keeps Live Music Alive With a New Festival

Posted on May 12, 2021 by Bill Tucker

For more than eight years, Black Fret supported the Austin music community with an unstoppable sense of purpose and accomplishment. When COVID brought live music to a near standstill, many of us wondered who would step up and take a stand. Black Fret came to the table and their brand new music festival, “Keep Live Music Alive,” is the comeback party we’ve been asking for since March of 2020. And with news of the 2021 class of grant nominees around the corner, there has never been a better time to become a member and support the music.

Doing The Right Thing Since 2013

Founded by Colin Kendrick and Matt Ott in 2013, Black Fret aims to support the local music scene through member support. Members pay a flat fee that goes toward yearly grants. In return, members get access to unique, intimate listening room style performances. Every year, members nominate twenty artists to receive either a minor ($5,000) or major ($20,000) grant. The year culminates in the Black Ball, a sensational awards show and concert blowout at the Moody Theater. I’ve been to multiple Black Balls over the years, and trust me. They are experiences!

And while COVID kicked the Austin live music scene in the gut, Black Fret fought back with the Happy Hour Concert series. The program paid out over $250,000 to over 150 musicians for playing shows for companies and businesses over Zoom. It’s that sort of innovation that helped Black Fret stay helpful and relevant during the pandemic.

How’s this for numbers? To date, Black Fret has awarded $2,000,000 to local musicians and $1,500,000 to Austin-area venues and music businesses. Every artist playing a Black Fret showcase gets paid as does every venue. And for the first time, this year’s season dues is $750. While that may seem steep, it’s a hefty discount from years past. And consider the amount of live shows you get exclusive access to, along with knowing you’re supporting the art that keeps Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World. It’s a donation worth considering if you have the means to do so.

The Keep Live Music Alive Festival

Now that COVID restrictions are relaxing enough for Austin to dip its collective toe back into live music, Black Fret is launching its first membership drive of the season in the form of a festival. The “Keep Live Music Alive” festival will take place from May 14-16th at the Long Center Terrace. While the event is listed as members only, single-day tickets are available for non-members. But that’s not the point. With an incredible lineup to offer, becoming a member is the best way to experience this three-day extravaganza.

The jam packed schedule reads like a who’s who of new Austin music. While ATX staples like Ley Line and Darkbird make me smile, I’m dying to check out Zach Person. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this local up-and-comer. The full schedule is as follows:

Looking Forward to the Season Ahead

And the festival is a jumping-off point. On June 11th via a private event at the Moody Theatre, Black Fret will announce this year’s class of artists. After months of live shows, the season will culminate in this year’s Black Ball on December 4th. As a fan of this wonderful organization, it’s great to see it up and running as intended: promoting and stewarding Austin live music. And if Black Fret’s re-emergence is the goal, the Keep Live Music Alive festival is its proof of concept.

“Black Fret is all about supporting our local music as the art that it is and we thank the Long Center for hosting our first ‘Keep Live Music Alive’ festival,” said Matt Ott, Co-founder of Black Fret. “COVID knocked our music community on our collective ass and it is time for us all to come together to support our artists, venues, and vendors that create our amazing music ecosystem in Austin. Joining Black Fret is a great way to accomplish that.”

When the music community was sucker-punched by COVID over a year ago, it hit everyone hard. From artists to venues and everyone in between, it was a time of uncertainty and anxiety. Despite it all, Black Fret continued to do what it does best—provide a lifeline to Austin’s cherished and storied music scene when it needed it most. And with this weekend’s celebration, the Austin music community hopes to turn the page on the year that was, and look forward to a great season of sounds ahead.

Austin Gilgronis Rugby Brings Intense Action to Bold Stadium

Posted on April 15, 2021 by Bill Tucker

As a life long East Coaster turned Austinite, rugby’s been a mystery. Outside of catching a match at a British pub at 11:00 AM or the rare highlight on TV, this punishing yet fascinating sport has been lost on me. And I think if I took an informal poll, most locals would feel the same way.

If so, y’all are missing out! Last week, my wife and I had the chance to check out Austin Gilgronis (AG) Rugby’s home opener at Bold Stadium. We found a sport well suited for our Longhorn loving city. Hard nosed, aggressive, and exciting, the lads of AG Rugby are bringing good times and great play to Circuit of the Americas.
