Posted on August 8, 2016 by Bill Tucker

Queso Dishes at Quesoff Austin

Expect lots of this at the 6th Annual Quesoff at Mohawk (Credit: Quesoff)

Queso. Simply saying the word activates saliva glands and rumbles the stomach. A staple of appetizer menus, backyard barbecues and UT game day snack spreads, this melted cheese sauce is as Austin as the Longhorns’ Burnt Orange.

But not all queso is created equal. The 6th Annual Quesoff on August 20, 2016 at Mohawk, aims to separate the pretenders from the contenders. Queso makers from around Austin will be pitted against each other in a battle of cheesy supremacy, all in support of a great cause. This is a delicious way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The gate drops and 24 twin-engine motorcycles leap forward in screaming unison. The elbow-to-elbow pack surges, speeding ahead on the flat track at more than 100 miles per hour. In seconds, they’ve reached the first turn; riders lean sharply in a horse-powered ballet. As one steel-toed booted foot skims the packed soil, each jockeys for position.

The crowd roars, thirsty for more.

Welcome to the world of Flat-Track Racing.

Like what you saw at X Games? Austin fans are in luck; we’ve got another chance to watch Flat-Track Racing this coming weekend. And Austin riders, you can go to school with X Games athlete and American Motorcyclist Association Pro champion Brad “The Bullet” Baker. [Read more…]

Since 2014, ESPN X Games and Austin have been a committed couple. But every relationship, no matter how sweet, eventually comes to an end, and so ESPN recently announced its search for a new 2017–2018 host city. While X Games Vice President Tim Reed said he “wouldn’t rule out” a return, he stated that a later summer date would mean the Austin venue was just too darn hot for spectators and athletes.

As a final farewell, X Games has made a few additions and subtractions, changes designed to leave athletes and Austin’s action sports fans separating on the best of terms. [Read more…]

Lemonade Day Austin

Guest article by Kyle Rea

If there’s a greater feeling than drinking cold lemonade on a hot day, maybe it’s drinking cold lemonade that has been crafted by the tiny hands we all love.

Picture this. You’re walking through Pease Park, reminiscing about last weekend’s birthday bash for Eeyore, when you spot three children behind a lemonade stand. One in a Spider-Man costume, one in a Wonder Woman costume and one in a Hulk costume. As you order a glass of their homemade lemonade, you realize you’ve just met three of Austin’s youngest entrepreneurs.

Get ready to find yourself in this situation on May 7, 2016: Lemonade Day Austin. Anywhere you go, you may see a lemonade stand run by a child or group of young friends who are not only looking to make some money for themselves, but also to donate to the charity of their choosing. [Read more…]

Camp Our Way Summer Camp Gives Adults Place to Unplug and Play

Posted on May 5, 2016 by Eliza Weeks

Summer Camp for Adults

Imagine spending a weekend in Texas Hill Country, surrounded by other adults who just want to be kids for 72 hours. The sun is shining, and the only decision you have to make is whether to pass the time kayaking, banana boating or crafting till your fingers are covered in glitter. And everywhere you look, there are cocktails and craft beer.

What is this place? Where did all this alcohol come from? And when was the last time you went this long without checking your cell phone?

It’s not a dream. It’s Camp Our Way–a summer camp created for adults who want to escape the real world for a weekend. The experience is all-inclusive and takes place in Austin’s backyard. [Read more…]

Girls Night Out for Austin Habitat for Humanity kicked off National Women Build Week

On April 28, 2016, women volunteers in pink hard hats gathered together in the Lowe’s parking lot off Brodie Lane for Girls Night Out, the kick off event for National Women Build Week.
