Revival Public House Blends Pub and Southern Comfort Downtown

June 16, 2016 by Bill Tucker Leave a Comment

Editor’s Note: Revival House has closed.

The corner of 2nd and Trinity can be a challenging one for new Austin businesses. When companies and trade shows invade the Austin Convention Center, profits soar. When they leave, it’s a different story. Located too far for the South Congress lunch crowd, and inconvenient for the Rainey/6th Street scene, blossoming restaurants have had a tough time maintaining a regular clientele.

Revival Public House hopes to change all that. Through an Austin-centric menu, décor and vibe, this new eatery offers up Southern comfort food with an ATX twist. The result is a delicious addition to the local foodie scene that’s well worth traveling the extra couple of blocks. [Read more…]

Girls Giving Grants Inspires Austin’s Younger Generation to Give

Girls Giving Grants Award Posada Esperanza

G3 members award their generous grant to Posada Esperanza (Credit: G3)

When I was in elementary school, I set up plenty lemonade and cupcake stands in my neighborhood. Ever the frugal child, I would stow away my hard earned–or squeezed–pennies until I had enough to buy the next Harry Potter book or Barbie that I wanted.

Many of us have these childhood memories in common, but Austin’s Girls Giving Grants program is turning that image up a notch. Leave it to Austin to encourage kids to not only be entrepreneurial, but philanthropic, as well.

Free 2ND Street Soundcheck to Showcase Local Artists in Downtown Austin

June 13, 2016 by Guest Blogger Leave a Comment

2ND Street District Austin

On June 18, the 2ND Street District will fill with live music and vendors during free 2ND Street Soundcheck festival (Credit: 2ND Street District)

Guest article by Alicia Santiago

An Austin summer is filled to the brim with free movie screenings, swimming holes, brewery tours and live music. The summer live music scene feels different than it does the rest of the year. Attribute it to the Texas sun or UT students’ summer vacation, but summer in Austin feels like a time for locals to enjoy the Live Music Capital of the World.

You’ve heard about Blues on the Green and Unplugged at the Grove, but the 2ND Street Soundcheck festival takes the cake for summer music festivals. This free family event offers live music, shopping, in-store performances and outdoor fun, all while supporting the local artistic community. [Read more…]

As the sun sets, the string lights wrapped around the majestic oak trees seem to burn brighter. You know you’ve come to a special place in Austin: Hill’s Cafe.

Hill’s Cafe has been a prominent part of south Austin since 1947. Over the years, it has provided the backdrop for many musical nights and has given locals a place to get Texas comfort food.

Mural Competition Alert: Display Your Artwork in Downtown Austin

May 25, 2016 by Guest Blogger Leave a Comment

Hyatt Regency Mural Competition Austin

The deadline for Hyatt Regency Austin’s mural competition is May 31, 2016

Guest article by Sam Small

So you’re a street artist or know someone who is? If you’d like your art to be seen in one of Austin’s areas with the most foot traffic, here’s a mural competition for you.

Hyatt Regency Austin on Barton Springs Road at South Congress has a wall that is currently ordinary and not doing much at all. The 20-foot by 5-foot wall in question was going to get a fresh coat of paint when someone proposed, “Why not paint a mural on it?” The conversation led to the idea for a community competition, and that’s where you come in.

The Hyatt team wouldn’t expect something like this to be done for nothing. So they’re offering a prize for the winning mural proposal. The winner will receive his or her choice of a $1,000 gift card to Jerry’s Artarama (a local art supply shop) or two three-day passes to the 2016 Austin City Limits Music Festival with a complimentary weekend stay at Hyatt Regency Austin. Not bad, eh?

Hike and Bike Trail Austin

And here’s another thing about this wall. It’s on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. Yes, the one that now goes in a loop from north shore to south and is frequented by one and a half million people every year. That’s 28,000 people a week or 4,000 people every day who would potentially walk by your amazing wall painting! Talk about prime gallery real estate.

If you’re not already known locally, you may be after this level of exposure. Austin is known for its street murals, from “Greetings from Austin,” (First Street and Annie in South Austin) to “i love you very much,” (Jo’s Coffee on South Congress) to “Hi, how are you” (W. 21st Street and Guadalupe). Your submission to Hyatt’s competition can include text or be pictorial only. Either way, the selection panel is awaiting your entry.

Austin’s diverse collection of beloved street murals

If you want to give it a shot, open up your Instagram account and upload a photograph of your mural art. Be sure to include the hashtags #HyattLovesATX and #Entry. You must be a local Austin resident or someone who can physically be in Austin to paint the mural. There’s no entry limit; just remember this is a family-friendly viewing area.

The deadline to enter is Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 9 p.m., so think fast. Instagram submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges based on specific criteria including uniqueness, creativity and appeal.

The winner will be notified by Friday, June 10 and must be able to complete their mural design on the hotel’s wall between Friday, June 10 and Monday, June 20. You can email Dorothy Hornbeck at dhornbeck@jameskorenchen.com with your questions and access the official rules here.

@theAustinot wants to know:

What is your favorite street mural or art piece in Austin?

Sam Small and his wife made the permanent move from London, England to Austin, Texas in 2014. Sam is a writer of songs, articles and screenplays and also runs a small recording studio in south Austin.

Poor Herman Play at The Off Center in Austin

“Poor Herman” is playing at The Off Center through May 28, 2016

Playwright Elizabeth Doss is comfortable in her petite frame and porcelain skin. She doesn’t hide behind caked-on cosmetics, jewels that sparkle or threads that scream “look at me.” The day we met over coffee, her solid cable-knit gray dress accentuated smoky blue eyes framed by shoulder-length blond locks and bangs, held back by a tiny green barrette.

As she began to speak about her upcoming play “Poor Herman,” her eyes began to shift quickly as one thought moved to the next, her hands expressively cutting through the air. It was obvious by her animation that this play is special–and close to her heart. [Read more…]

Community First! Village Goes Beyond Housing for Austin Homeless

May 18, 2016 by Eliza Weeks 1 Comment

Community First Village Austin

What if the answer to homelessness is not as simple as creating more housing? This was a question Community First! Village founder Alan Graham struggled with when first working with Mobile Loaves & Fishes, an Austin nonprofit organization. It was relatively easy to “lift up” an individual off the streets and put a roof over their head. But giving them the support needed to combat a fall back into homelessness was another story.

According to Graham, the primary cause of chronic homelessness is the total loss of family and support. After concluding that offering a roof over someone’s head is not enough, the team at Mobile Loaves & Fishes decided to take matters into their own hands and create a community where the homeless and housed population of Austin could come together to eradicate homelessness and the stereotypes that precede it. From this unified effort, Community First! Village was born. [Read more…]

Volunteers Unite for Women Build Week and Habitat for Humanity

National Women Build Week Austin

Girls Night Out for Austin Habitat for Humanity kicked off National Women Build Week

On April 28, 2016, women volunteers in pink hard hats gathered together in the Lowe’s parking lot off Brodie Lane for Girls Night Out, the kick off event for National Women Build Week. In partnership with Lowe’s locations across the country, Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program encourages women to dedicate their time to assist in building homes for families in need of affordable housing.

This service impacts recipient families by providing them the independence of homeownership. At the same time, volunteers are educated in construction skills as they build the framework of a house. The event revolves around the idea of empowering women to inspire each other as they make a tangible difference in their community. [Read more…]

Bike Austin Takes Action to Achieve Friendlier Streets

April 21, 2016 by Eliza Weeks 1 Comment

Bike Austin

Every day while I sit in my car pushing through Austin’s traffic like a salmon in spring, I stare out my window and watch helmeted figures whiz by on their bicycles.

From my steel confinement, I initially experience vicarious anxiety: Yikes! To bike past these crazy drivers, you’d have to be pretty brave.

Next comes awe: Ugh, trekking up those hills in this humidity would be a pain.

And finally as these bicyclists ride off into the distance and I’m left in the same gridlocked position I was in five minutes ago, I feel sheer jealousy. I want nothing more than to abandon my car, feel the wind in my hair and actually reach my final destination. [Read more…]
