Breaking Ground on 37 Acres of Connected Green Space in Downtown Austin

Palm Park Revitalization Austin

A historically important park with strong connections to East Austin communities, Palm Park will be revitalized as a major entrance to the creek trail and a central gathering place. The redesigned park will host a variety of community programs including movie nights, open-air markets and outdoor exhibitions. (Rendering courtesy of Waller Creek Conservancy)

The city of Austin is home to more than 300 parks, but there’s always room for more, especially when we’re talking about accessible green space in the highly urbanized and rapidly growing downtown area. Waller Creek is a one and a half mile riparian ecosystem that begins at Waterloo Park and travels south along the eastern edge of downtown Austin to converge with Lady Bird Lake.

In partnership with the City of Austin and thanks to a $15 million grant from the Moody Foundation–the largest amount for parks and public open space ever gifted in the city of Austin–Waller Creek Conservancy will break ground on Phase 1 of its revitalization project later this year, beginning with Waterloo Park. Back for its second year, the Waller Creek Conservancy’s Creek Show 2015 celebrates downtown’s bright future. Despite last year’s cold weather, more than 5,000 people turned out to stroll along Waller Creek amid creative, site-specific light installations.

The event has been expanded this year. From Nov. 12-21, 2015, Austinites can explore the beauty waiting beneath Austin’s city streets. [Read more…]

Waller Creek Concept in Austin, TX

An urban oasis is reimagined in this Waller Creek concept photo (Credit: Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates)

You could say that the Hike and Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake is the heart of Austin, Texas. The ebb and flow of runners and cyclists of all ages making their way along the 10 mile trail is like blood coursing through veins.

With the boardwalk now finished, the 1.3 mile gap at the south shore is closed and the loop is complete. So now what?

Enter the Waller Creek Conservancy, a nonprofit partner of the City of Austin, established in 2010 with a mission to transform and sustain Austin’s Waller Creek. The Waller Creek Conservancy is in the process of revitalizing the area that runs from Waterloo Park at 15th Street all the way down to Lady Bird Lake, connecting to the Hike and Bike Trail. The Wheeler Brothers Fire Up Stubb’s to Protect Waller Creek

October 23, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Stubb's BBQ in Austin, TexasThe eve of ACL 2012 had security’s panties in a knot, as long lines formed outside Stubb’s back lot. Despite the warm invitation from the Wheeler Brothers’ publicist, our Canon 7D became a liability and Eric and I wondered whether our established threesome would make it through the gates.

The five members of the Wheeler Brothers opened their set while we jumped through hoops outside. But with a photographer wristband attached firmly to Eric’s wrist, we earned our entrance and he edged his way toward the stage. As he positioned himself for close-ups, security approached again. Photos were only allowed during the first three songs.

Fascinated that our Austin musical events have adopted such an excess of legislation, my faithful photog used his powers of persuasion effectively. He talked his way into [Read more…]
