Black Ball Awards $150,000 to Austin Musicians

December 7, 2015 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Black Fret Black Ball 2015

Second Annual Black Ball at The Paramount Theatre

It’s easy to say we love Austin’s live music scene, but Black Fret is actually doing something for local musicians. $150,000 worth of something.

At the second annual Black Ball Gala, Friday night at The Paramount Theatre, non-profit Black Fret awarded grants to 20 musicians, for a total of $150,000 in grant dollars. Ten major grant winners received $12,000 each, while 10 minor grant winners were awarded $3,000.

The organization is built on its members, about 300 and counting. These patrons donate $1,500 per year to fulfill Black Fret’s mission: “to empower musicians to create and perform great new music.” [Read more…]

Austin Music Foundation Empowers Local Artists

October 30, 2015 by Mathis Kennington 1 Comment

Austin Music Foundation Office

Though the typical Austinite may never see it, there is much more to Austin’s vibrant musicians than late night shows and the latest hustle.

Austin Music Foundation is one of the few local non-profits that support local musicians, so they can continue to rock our musical worlds.

Although I knew of Austin Music Foundation, I was amazed to discover just how hard the organization works to help musicians become as business-savvy as they are creative. This is vital to their lasting success. Because while Austin gets the best of their creativity, musicians aren’t always equipped with the business savvy it takes to be successful in the industry over the long run. [Read more…]

Austin Dog Alliance Service Dog

Service dog in training, Piper, relaxes in the shade

Guest article by Angela Bowers

There’s a reason we say a dog is man’s best friend. Austin Dog Alliance, a non-profit based in Cedar Park, trains and coordinates therapy teams consisting of a dog and its owner. These volunteer teams work with special needs patients, as well as nursing homes and elementary schools. Oh, and did I mention some of these services are free?

Arts, Athleticism Shine with Blue Lapis Light Performances

Blue Lapis Light Performance

For some, hitting the dance floor can be challenging. Imagine executing those same moves while hanging in air. Now, take that scenario to the side of a downtown building, underneath the I-35 bridge, or suspended from 25-foot high scaffolding.

Welcome to the world of Austin’s Blue Lapis Light.

Blue Lapis Light is a site-specific dance company that combines the art of dance and music, athleticism, aerial silks and the drama of Austin’s skyline into unique yearly shows. Their current performance, Edge of Grace, serves additional functions. It gives the public a look at Blue Lapis Light’s new south Austin studio location, while celebrating 10 years of creative performance and educational outreach. [Read more…]

Casa Marianella, Haven Across the Street and Around the World

August 27, 2015 by Eliza Weeks Leave a Comment

Casa Marianella Austin

When residents come to Casa Marianella, they are no longer home-less

If you’re not a native Austinite, can you remember when you first moved to the city known for keeping it weird? During your initial explorations, were you perturbed by everyone’s obsession with bats, desperate for a breakfast that didn’t come wrapped in a tortilla, or so overcome by heat and humidity that all you wanted to do was throw yourself into one of our many bodies of water?

Obviously this unique city endeared itself to you. You are reading this, after all. But think about those first few weeks or maybe even months of learning to embrace the weirdness and navigate I-35. Now imagine doing this in a language that is not your first, in a place where you don’t know anyone, and after a journey not just across the country in a loaded U-Haul, but across the world with perhaps only a few prized possessions in hand. Inside Books Project Works to Free Minds of Texas Prisoners

July 23, 2015 by Erin May 1 Comment

Inside Books Project

Inside Books Project connects Texas prisoners with books

It looks like a private library. Shelves of used books line the length of a wall and a U-shaped area across the room. A giant colorful planet is painted on another wall. People are quiet and studious.

This is not your average library, however, and people aren’t here to study. This is where a non-profit called Inside Books Project is located, and the volunteers in the room are writing letters and sending books to Texas prisoners.

Inside Books Project sends approximately 50,000 books a year to prisoners across our state, connecting them to literature, reference texts, comics, art, history and more. [Read more…]

The SIMS Foundation Marks 20 Years of Mental Health Service for Musicians

SIMS Foundaton Concert

SIMS Foundation concert in support of mental health for Austin musicians

Guest article by Emily Burns

Twenty years ago, the SIMS Foundation opened its doors to a community in need. Born from tragedy, the foundation was created after the devastating suicide of Sims Ellison, the bassist for local band Pariah. Ellison battled severe depression for many years and was unable to receive the help he needed. It was this drastic event that inspired the creation of an organization that could provide affordable mental health options for uninsured musicians in Austin. [Read more…]
