A Concert That Will Leave You Without Regrets

July 24, 2013 by David Thomas Leave a Comment

Soldier Thread Without Regrets Foundation Benefit Concert

Soldier Thread jams to a packed Threadgill’s

On August 10th, the sweet sound of music will drift north across Ladybird Lake as Threadgill’s and KLBJ FM help the Without Regrets Foundation throw their second annual benefit concert.

The Charity

Without Regrets was founded in Dripping Springs, Texas in June, 2011. Four months later in October, they officially gained their non-profit status. Co-founders Tara Ballard and Che Heinroth saw a need to help families with terminally ill parents to have one last moment of reprieve from the emotional and financial stresses that burden their lives. “This gives them something to look forward to other than doctor visits and treatment plans,” [Read more…]

If you’ve been curious about how you can give back to the Austin community on a regular basis, and simultaneously spend time with like-minded people, I’ve found the organization for you. Austin Involved, a local program run by I Live Here, I Give Here, allows its members to vote for and support one fantastic Austin non-profit every month of the year.

When a non-profit is chosen by Austin Involved’s members, it benefits from a three-hour service project. Members also donate $25 per person each month to the same non-profit. That amount of money equates to what you might [Read more…]

Austin Civic Orchestra Embraces Change for New Audiences

May 21, 2013 by Brittany Highland Leave a Comment

Butler School of Music University of Texas

The Austin Civic Orchestra recently performed at UT’s Butler School of Music

The startling clash of cymbals, the thunderous boom of the kettle drums, the precise and fiery melody of the strings. No matter how old you are, if you’ve never experienced a full orchestra live, you’re missing out.

Being on the younger end of life myself, I understand that sitting in a dark concert hall for a couple of hours may not seem enjoyable. But in the middle of our fast-paced lives and over-stimulation, we could use some exposure to classical music that has withstood centuries because of how amazing it is. Live orchestra performances aren’t boring, and the Austin Civic Orchestra exists to prove that point. [Read more…]

Free Yoga Classes Through WeViva

Find your Zen-Yoga with WeViva at KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program)

Living in one of America’s fittest cities, an Austin woman identified a lack of healthy lifestyle options for adults in low income communities, particularly in the areas of fitness and wellness.

Carolyn Haney, Founder of WeViva, created an amazing mix of lifestyle and social trials that are changing the way families in low income communities think about and implement exercise and nutrition in their daily lives. [Read more…]

Grown-Up Spelling Bee Propels Literacy Coalition of Central Texas

April 30, 2013 by Brittany Highland Leave a Comment

Great Grown Up Spelling Bee at Zach Theatre

The 10th Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee took place at the Zach Theatre

Do you take for granted your ability to read and write? Whether you do or not, this statistic will blow your mind: 1 in 5 native, English-speaking adults in Central Texas can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application.

Founded in 2001, the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas is doing something to change this startling fact. This local organization exists to improve the quality of literacy education in our area, and to increase its availability for those who need it. It’s a centralized hub that coordinates with more than 70 literacy programs in the Austin area.

As with any non-profit, fundraising is always a requirement. Ten years ago, the Literacy Coalition came up with a fun way to raise money, while providing a unique night of entertainment for [Read more…]

What Is Human Trafficking and Why Should Austin Care?

March 26, 2013 by Guest Blogger 3 Comments

Children Behind Bars Human TraffickingThis guest blog post is by Kyle Bailey.

When you hear “human trafficking,” what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, it’s probably the image of Liam Neeson, his voice rasping out threats against his daughter’s captors in the 2008 movie Taken.

In a couple of ways, this image embodies the misconceptions around the evil that is human trafficking. The first misconception is that it’s “over there” (international, outside the United States). The second misconception is that human trafficking always involves shipping humans from one point to another.

Human trafficking is oppressive, evil and pervasive. It’s also here in Austin, right under our noses.  [Read more…]

Austin Influential Group: Having a Ball for Charity

March 19, 2013 by Laura Darby 1 Comment

Secret Society Ball Benefit for Austin Pets Alive

Secret Society Ball hostess Mandy Lauderdale welcomes party-goers with puppy at her side

Waiting in line outside of the Swan Dive, the setting feels transformed. The red carpet below our feet, the excitement emanating from the other people in line, their feathers and fringe swaying in the night breeze.

We stood for our picture in front of a beautiful grey and blue fleur background, like a vignette from Downton Abbey, me in my elbow-length gloves and Adam in his white tie tuxedo with tails.

We were transported into the roaring 20’s inside, swinging jazz blaring and dancers jitterbugging on the center floor.

Our hostess, Mandy Lauderdale, floated through the crowd, yet what was trailing behind her? Wasabi, a bouncing puppy! [Read more…]
