Let the little ones show off their Halloween costumes while filling a pumpkin bag with candy at Hill Country Galleria’s annual Halloween Treat Trail.

Starting at 11 AM on October 31, the fun begins at Central Plaza, where kids can pick up a festive pumpkin bag before heading down Hill Country Boulevard for trick-or-treating.

Along the open-air shopping strip, they can collect sweets from retailers like Dillard’s, Barnes & Noble, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, plus more than 80 other shops.

Plan to arrive right around 11 AM, since the event draws families early and pumpkin bags and candy are available only while supplies last.

The Treat Trail wraps up at 2 PM, leaving you with the rest of Halloween afternoon to grab lunch, visit another family-friendly event, or get home in time for neighborhood trick-or-treating.

Family-Friendly Community Festivals & Halloween ATX Events

Texas Capitol “Rest in Peace” Halloween Tour

You’ve probably admired the Texas State Capitol’s grand rotunda and beautiful architecture, but have you heard about the people who died inside its walls?

The Capitol’s “Rest in Peace” Halloween Tour digs into the building’s darker history, with stories that are every bit as chilling as a ghost tale. Hear about Ed Wheeler, a painter who fell from the dome scaffolding in 1922, and State Comptroller Robert Marshall Love, who was shot at his desk in 1903.

Along the way, your guide mixes real Texas history with reported ghost sightings, including stories of a woman in red who supposedly vanishes through walls near the Lieutenant Governor’s Reception Room.

Best of all, this Halloween outing is free and gives curious kids and adults something genuinely interesting to talk about afterward.

Special tours on October 31 run at 10 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM, with each one lasting around 40 minutes. No registration is needed, so just head to the south entrance and get ready to see a different side of one of Austin’s most recognizable landmarks.

Where: Texas Capitol, 1100 Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78701
When: October 31, 2026 | 10 am , 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm

Pins & Wheels Halloween Party

Skating, bowling, arcade games, face painting, and a costume contest? Pins & Wheels at Playland gives your family plenty to get excited about this Halloween.

On October 31, the venue hosts its third annual Halloween party from 10 AM to 3 PM, with trick-or-treating throughout the facility and a guest DJ keeping the party moving.

The roller-skating rink remains a favorite, but the late-2024 renovation added even more ways to spend the day, including bowling, karaoke rooms, axe throwing, and an expanded arcade. Kids can hit the rink and collect candy while the rest of the group explores the other activities.

Come dressed for the costume contest, bring your appetite for a few hours of fun, and still have the evening free for more Halloween plans around Austin.

Where: 8822 McCann Dr, Austin, TX 78757
When: October 31, 2026 | 10 am – 3 pm
How Much: $25 for kids | $12 for adults

6th Street Halloween Street Party

Pull together your best costume and get ready to join the crowds on Austin’s famous 6th Street.

Every Halloween, the stretch from Brazos to the I-35 frontage road closes to traffic from 6 PM, turning the area into a massive pedestrian party.

Costumed crowds fill the street, live music spills out of the bars, and people show off everything from clever DIY getups to elaborate character costumes as they wander between venues.

Individual bars run their own parties and specials, so you can move between venues instead of committing to one place for the entire evening. Expect heavy crowds, plan your meeting spot with friends, and leave yourself plenty of time to get around on foot.

One important rule for younger visitors: Beyond 11 pm, the festivities will be more geared towards adults so make sure anyone under 17 is headed home by then.

Pumpkin Nights Austin

Halloween day in Austin - Pumpkin Nights

Imagine walking through a glowing underwater world, wandering past the Forbidden City, and discovering nine imaginative lands made from more than 10,000 hand-carved and custom-designed pumpkins. That’s Pumpkin Nights, a half-mile trail where pumpkin art does the talking and every turn brings something new to look at.

Live artists carve fresh pieces throughout the season, so the display continues to grow right up to Halloween, the final night of the 2026 run.

Make time for Pumpkin Village in the middle of the trail, where you can catch a live fire show, grab food and drinks, and let the kids enjoy family games.

Entry is timed every 30 minutes, and Halloween tickets can sell out, so book online ahead of time.

House of Torment

Halloween day in Austin - House of Torment

Ready to find out how much terror you can handle? House of Torment is back for the 2026 Halloween season with three new haunted experiences, including Jason Universe: Survive the Night, an officially licensed Friday the 13th walkthrough featuring Jason Voorhees himself.

For an extra dose of dread, a limited add-on even lets you influence how Jason targets your group, with options such as “slash” and “stalk.” If you’ve ever watched a horror movie and wondered how you’d fare inside one, this is your chance to test your nerve.

The new attractions also include a post-apocalyptic dystopia and an eerie ritual scenario.

Once you’ve made it through the haunted houses, there’s more to explore across the grounds, including axe throwing, five-minute Mini Escape Games, a Hades Zombie Simulation, and Phobia: Sensory Overload.

Need a breather between scares? The Nocturne Sanctum is a secret bar for guests 21 and older.

Halloween is one of its busiest nights; book a Fast Pass or Immediate Admission ticket in advance if you’d rather spend more time inside the attractions than waiting in line.

Where: 2632 Ridgepoint Dr, Austin, TX 78754
When: September 12 – November 8, 2026
How Much: Starts at $19.99

Scream Hollow

Take a 40-minute drive east of Austin to Scream Hollow in Smithville, where 20 acres of dark woods set the stage for a Halloween night full of things you’d rather not encounter in real life.

Five haunted attractions stretch across 25 buildings, including one that Lionsgate named the scariest haunted attraction in the nation.

The 2026 season adds Alien Encounter, a crashed-spaceship nightmare built into the forest setting. But make room for the Hollowed Harvest Hayride, too. Billed as Texas’s only haunted hayride, it takes you deep into the woods, where the darkness around you becomes part of the scare.

You can easily spend more than your time inside the haunted attractions here. Explore the Halloween History Museum, described as the only one of its kind in the world, and the Haunted Artifacts Museum, which houses a real human skeleton.

Fortune tellers, live music, bonfires, the Cackling Witch Cafe & Bakery, and the 21-and-up Rabid Bat Vampire Bar give you plenty to do between scares.

Wear closed-toe shoes because the grounds are dark and the terrain uneven. The experience is recommended for ages 12 and up, and the park is open on October 31 as part of its regular Friday-through-Sunday schedule.

Where: 149 Split Rail Ln, Smithville, TX 78957
When: Late September – Early November
How Much: Starts at $32.48

Bat City Scaregrounds

You don’t have to head into downtown Austin to get your Halloween scare fix. About 20 minutes south of the city in Buda, Bat City Scaregrounds spreads across 15 acres, with three haunted houses at the heart of its Halloween park.

On October 31, there’s an extra reason to stick around: Austin horror-punk band The Immortalz is scheduled to perform live on the raised main stage, and the show is included with park admission.

Between haunted houses, you can catch Vegas-style performances, encounter roaming performers, and grab food and seasonal treats from the food trucks.

The experience is recommended for ages 12 and up.

Where: 14101 S Turnersville Rd, Buda, TX 78610
When: September 26, 2026 – October 31, 2026

Get your costume ready, gather your friends, and spend Halloween hopping between Austin bars without stopping at every door to figure out the cover charge.

Several organized bar crawls run on October 31 across overlapping parts of Sixth Street, with tickets that typically include a wristband for participating venues and access to drink specials.

The Crawl With US option starts with check-in at Willow Country Bar on West Sixth Street between 4 and 6 PM, then takes you through 12 bars across West Sixth, East Sixth, and East Sixth Street.

Advance tickets start at $15 and include two to three complimentary drinks or shots, plus exclusive drink specials at participating venues. You’ll also get a digital 3D map of the route, and an after-party is included when the main crawl wraps up at 10 PM.

Check the ticket details before booking so you know exactly which venues and benefits are included, then spend the night comparing costumes, finding your next drink deal, and letting the route do the planning for you.

Pull out a vintage horror-inspired costume, grab a drink, and settle in for a few hours of music and skyline views before heading to another Halloween party.

Admission is free, but RSVP in advance because space is limited.

Fairmont Austin Haunted Rooftop Party

Dress to impress, find your favorite Halloween look, and dance your way through three party spaces at the Fairmont Austin.

From 9 PM to 2 AM on October 31, the hotel’s Halloween celebration spreads across the Palm Park Ballroom, the outdoor Palm Park, and Rules & Regs, its seventh-floor rooftop bar overlooking downtown. Four DJs keep the music going across the venues, so you can move between the dance floor and the open-air spaces without leaving the party.

Arrive ready to dance, show off your costume, and settle in for a late night that runs well past midnight.

Where: Fairmont Austin, 101 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701
When: October 31, 2026 | 9 pm – 2 am
How Much: Starts at $37

Know Before You Go: Halloween Day in Austin Local Tips

Austin’s Halloween plans stretch well beyond downtown. You can spend the afternoon trick-or-treating at Hill Country Galleria, head out to Smithville for haunted attractions at Scream Hollow, or stay closer to the city for pumpkin displays and Sixth Street nightlife.

If you’re driving between events, keep an eye on traffic along I-35 and MoPac, especially during the late-afternoon commute when Halloween crowds start heading out, too.

Give yourself extra time to park and get to the entrance, particularly for popular family events and timed-entry attractions. A little planning beats spending your Halloween stuck in traffic or circling a full parking lot.

Common Questions About Halloween Day in Austin

What time does trick-or-treating start on Halloween Day in Austin?

For neighborhood trick-or-treating, plan to head out around dusk, usually between 6 and 6:30 PM. Shopping centers and organized daytime events often start much earlier, making them a better fit for younger kids who won’t last until dark.

Check the specific event’s schedule before leaving, since start times vary by location.

Are there free trick-or-treating events for toddlers in Austin?

Yes. Hill Country Galleria’s Halloween Treat Trail is one option for families, with candy stops at shops along its open-air shopping strip. Local malls and shopping centers may also host family-friendly Halloween events, but dates, hours, and participation can change each year.

Check the venue’s current event details before you go, especially if you’re planning around nap time or bringing a toddler in costume.

Do Austin restaurants offer free food on Halloween?

Yes, some national chains offer Halloween deals for guests who meet their promotion requirements. Chipotle’s Boorito deal offers $6 burritos, bowls, tacos, or salads for Rewards members, while Krispy Kreme has offered a free doughnut to guests wearing costumes.

Offers can come with restrictions, including membership requirements, participating locations, and limited availability, so check the latest terms before making a special trip.
