Another steamy weekend is on the horizon and, with it, another slate of sensational local music. This weekend, we recommend old school country, an all-female singer/songwriter showcase, and a local musician’s legendary birthday party.
It’s a fine time to be hanging out in Austin, Texas, so do it up in style, y’all. Listen local!
Friday, July 12
James Hand
@ The Continental Club (1315 S. Congress Ave.) – 10 p.m. – Tickets
An unsung hero of the Texas country scene, Austin local James Hand embodies the best of outlaw honky tonk, through songs spiked with hard lessons learned through harder living.
Tunes like “Mighty Lonesome Man” and “Floor to Crawl” tell forlorn stories of lost romance, while the wonderful “In the Corner, At the Table, By the Jukebox” is a saloon song that stands the test of time.
True Texas country is a slowly suffocating genre, so take this opportunity to catch this local legend live and in person.
Saturday, July 13
Girls Support Girls Female Songwriter Showcase
@ One-2-One Bar (1509 S. Lamar Blvd.) – 3:30 p.m. – Tickets
Discovering new musical talent is what makes Austin unique and wonderful. If you’re looking for a new favorite female songwriter, then look no further than One-2-One Bar this weekend. Some of Austin’s climbing singer/songwriters will be taking the stage, for an afternoon of beautiful voices and stunning arrangements.
Standout performers include dream pop/folk songstress Christina Cavazos, the indie pop sound of Christine Renner, and Austin Music Award nominee Madi Meeks. Support the up and comers, and find a new favorite!
Jake Ames Birthday Bash w/Annabelle Chairlegs, Serumn, Caroline Says, more
@ Barracuda (611 E. 7th St.) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event
Local favorite and spokesperson for musician’s rights, Jake Ames deserves the finest of birthday parties. During Day Two of his celebratory weekend, Baracudda will be filled to the brim with local talent. Headlined by the ’60s head-trip rock of Annabelle Chairlegs, Caroline Say’s brand of mellow indie, and Jake’s beloved afro-groove nine-piece Serumn (formally Continental Drift).
All proceeds will be donated to HAAM, making the evening philanthropic as well as fun. An incredible event for a good cause.
