One weekend down, one more to go! As ACL Fest hurtles towards its second weekend, those of us bereft of wristbands will need something to listen to. Thankfully, our fine city is packed to the gills with fine, local music. This weekend, we recommend psychedelic cumbia, post-punk beach bop, and evocative, banjo-driven folk. Only in Austin, ladies and gents. Enjoy the weekend and keep listening local!

Money Chicha w/Clemente Castillo, Daniel Dennis
@ Beerland (711 Red River) – 9 p.m. – Event page
A blistering combination of of cumbia rhythms, psychedelic guitar, and reverb notched to 11, Money Chicha is head music with an impossible to ignore body-shaking groove. Yet another spinoff from the Grupo Fantasma/Brownout family of musicians, Money Chicha’s lo-fi guitar fuzz and precise Latin percussion contrast in a splendid dance of competing styles.
Just give a quick listen to the group’s cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” to see how this exciting homage to ’60s-era chicha music can sound relevant and amazing to modern ears.

Teenage Cavegirl
@ The 13th Floor (1812 E. 12th) – 11 p.m. – Facebook event
Hyper lo-fi bop rock played with savage simplicity, Teenage Cavegirl is the soundtrack to a Halloween zombie remake of Elvis’s “Clam Bake.” Part surfer rock, part CBGB post-punk fuzz, this duo repackages easy to swallow riffs and rhythms into infectious ear worms.
Brand new single “Psychotic Reaction” blends effects-up guitar scrawl, sneering vocals, and thump-thump drum kicks into an early Black Keys-style stunner. A super rad band worth checking out live.
Little Mazarn w/Shrugs, Ama, Sun June

@ Lamberts (401 W. 2nd St.) – 9:15 p.m. – Facebook event
Discoveries like the emotionally stirring folk of Little Mazarn is why I love doing this weekly feature. Spare and surreal, Little Mazarn’s meandering, wandering sound is the stuff of pleasant dreams, and repressed memories.
The haunting and enveloping “My Love is All Around You” soaks vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Verrill’s beautiful alto with musical saw swells, and tight, pointed banjo plucks. The effect is entrancing and, frankly, awe-inspiring. The next time I get the bug to write short fiction, Little Mazarn is what I’ll be piping into the background.
Also playing: local indie rockers Ama, emo pop band Sun June (which I love), and Louisiana ambient folk act Shrugs.
